Date: 7/3/2018 Host Location: Moreland From Aaron Schultz, Tournament Director for this game

Moreland 18, Santa Clara Westside 3

Winning pitcher: Adam Clemens

SCWS started the game in command. Its pitcher Jake Prettol shut down MLL for 2 innings. The catcher John Kepner for SCWS was solid, blocking almost everything and thereby preventing MLL runners from advancing. Meanwhile, SCWS scored 2 runs quickly in the first inning.

Adam Clemens of MLL worked hard through the first inning to find his pitching rhythm. By mid second inning, Adam gained control over his pitches, and in the final analysis mastery over the SCWS lineup. SCWS scored no more runs through the 4th inning, with Adam in control on the hill.

The hitting jitters of MLL ceased, giving way in the third inning to a three rally. Thomas Corneillie and Cooper Salter led the way with key hits in this inning, and in several other innings. The tide truly turned in the bottom of the third, where MLL displayed examples of solid, clean little league fielding.

MLL shined particularly in the 4th inning, where not only were 5 key insurance runs manufactured, but successive quality at bats helped to retain teamwide momentum. SCWS continued to threaten with bats, but MLL's fielding in the 4th inning was superb.

Kyle Pollace pitched the bottom of the fifth inning for MLL. He pitched out of a jam, giving up only 1 run, preserving an 8-3 lead.

Thomas Corneillie, Cooper Salter, and others continued a hitting onslaught in the top of the sixth. The game ended in a walk-off three run by Salter, score 18-3. Kudos to John Kepner for a solid game in the squat for SCWS.

Adam Clemens was the winning pitcher for Moreland.

After a spirited round of pool play in the 11U tournament, undefeated Los Altos came to Bob Northern Field at Briarwood-El Camino Little League for game 4 of round one. Coming into the game Los Altos only had ceded one run through three previous matchups, and they broke through early against Briarwood to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Los Altos pitcher Luke Juran racked up two strikeouts to begin the bottom of the first, but Briarwood was not about to give up and cobbled together two hits and a walk to tie the game and convey to Los Altos that this would not be an easy victory for the visitors.

The second inning went 1-2-3 for both teams and Briarwood pitcher Sage Romero posted another 1-2-3 inning against Los Altos in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third inning, Briarwood showed its hitting strength with five consecutive hits to start the frame, topped off by a bases-clearing by Isaac Read that put Briarwood up 5 to 1. Briarwood added one more run before the inning ended and after 3 innings, previously undefeated Los Altos seemed stunned to be trailing the hosts 6 to 1.

Briarwood pitcher Sage Romero put lights out on Los Altos in innings four and five, giving up just one single with four strikeouts, but Briarwood could not add more runs in their turns at bat, so the 6 to 1 lead stood as the game moved to inning six.

Sage Romero walked Jamie Burton to start the 6th and Luke Susko was safe on a spinning dribbler near the mound that Sage could not field in time. After stolen bases for both runners, Gino Capellazzo drilled a ground ball to deep shortstop that Justin Foerster fielded cleanly and threw to first baseman Jason Benson for out one, while Los Altos plated a run on the fielder's choice.

With two outs Landon Kim kept Los Altos' hopes alive with a single to center that chased Sage at his maximum of 89 pitches.

Reliever Jason Benson walked Owen Blumstein and issued a couple wild pitches that moved runners and narrowed the score to 6 to 4. But Jason got Luke Orrock to ground out, shortstop to first, for out 3 and the victory for Briarwood El Camino, which left both teams tied in the final pool play standings at 3 wins, 1 loss.

"It was insane how our team worked together to pull off the victory," said Briarwood's winning pitcher Sage Romero. Briarwood third baseman Timothy Stampolis added "It was a tough match, but we managed to pull it off by collaborating with our teammates and we worked our way to the top inning by inning."
