History: Roger Kahn, born in 1927, grew up in Brooklyn where he attended prep school and, like most of his fellow Brooklynites, rooted enthusiastically for the Dodgers. He joined the New York Herald Tribune as a copy boy in 1948 and rose quickly to become a baseball writer. He began to cover the Dodgers in 1952, and also traveled with the other New York teams, the Giants and the Yankees. At the age of 26, he was the newspaper's "star" sports reporter, making a salary of $10,000. In 1956, Mr. Kahn was named sports editor of Newsweek magazine and then from 1963 to 1969 became editor at large of The Saturday Evening Post. For a decade he wrote a monthly column for Esquire magazine. Five times his articles were voted the best in the country and awarded the E.P. Dutton prize. In 1972, he published The Boys of Summer, which became the country's number- one best seller and a phrase that is now used hundreds of times by writers and fans during the baseball season. Mr. Kahn's other books include a biography of Jack Dempsey, a memoir of the season in which he owned a minor league baseball team, a history of a student uprising at Columbia University and a recollection of the era when the Yankees, Dodgers and Giants ruled the world. Three anthologies are entirely devoted to some of the best of Mr. Kahn's writing. In 2006 he was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. On that occasion, Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig called Mr. Kahn "an icon of our game." He lives in Stony Ridge with his wife and has two grown children; Alissa Keenan, a ceramist, and Gordon J. Kahn, A.I.A., a prominent architect. Source: www.rogerkahn.com Scope and Content: This collection contains the personal and professional papers of Roger Kahn. • Almost a Pelican
Almost A Pelican By S. Derby Gisclair The winningest pitcher in Cleveland Indians history, in 1962 Feller became the first pitcher since charter member Walter Johnson to be elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Though regarded as the fastest pitcher of his day, he himself attributed his strikeout records to his curve and slider. Blessed with a strong arm and an encouraging father, young Feller pitched to a makeshift backstop on the family farm near Van Meter, Iowa. Cleveland scout Cy Slapnicka signed him for one dollar and an autographed baseball. His velocity became an immediate legend when he struck out eight Cardinals in a three-inning exhibition stint. He came up as a 17- year-old at the end of 1936 and fanned 15 Browns in his first ML start and 17 Athletics shortly thereafter. But he was extremely wild. In 1938 he became a regular starter for the Indians. He won 17 and led the AL in strikeouts with 240. He also set a ML record with 208 walks. Although he led the AL in walks three more times, his control progressively improved. Meanwhile, he led the AL in both strikeouts and wins from 1939 to 1941. In 1940, he won his personal high with 27, including an Opening Day no-hitter against the White Sox. Yet the year was tarnished, first when Cleveland veterans, including Feller, earned the nickname Crybabies by asking Cleveland owner Alva Bradley to replace stern manager Ossie Vitt. Then Feller lost the season's climactic game and the pennant to Tigers unknown Floyd Giebell, despite pitching a three-hitter.

EMAIL PERMALINK PHOTO: BETTMANN ARCHIVE By Edward Kosner Sept. 28, 2017 6:33 pm ET SAVE PRINT TEXT 7 Of all sports, baseball lives the most in its past. Those meticulous statistics help, of course. And the fact that, over the years, the game has attracted more gifted writers than any other, from Ring Lardner to John Updike, Robert Coover and Philip Roth. Random baseball moments—not just epic coups like Bobby Thomson’s 1951 “miracle” home run—persist in memory long after they should have evanesced. Kevin Cook’s heartfelt and entertaining “Electric October” is ostensibly about the 1947 World Series between Joe DiMaggio’s Yankees and the Dodgers of Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese and Dixie Walker. The book is really about the lost drama and culture of mid- 20th-century baseball still embedded in the minds of old-timers. A onetime editor at Sports Illustrated, Mr. Cook doesn’t focus on the stars DiMaggio and Robinson. Instead he tells the stories of two baseball lifers—the Yankee manager Bucky Harris and the Dodger skipper Burt Shotton—and four bit players: Yankee journeyman pitcher Bill Bevens and Dodgers pinch hitter Cookie Lavagetto, who broke up Bevens’s no- RECOMMENDED VIDEOS hitter in game four; Al Gionfriddo, a diminutive scrub who kept Brooklyn in the series with NYC Sets Up Traveler- a sensational catch in game six; and George (Snuffy) Stirnweiss, a Yankee infielder who was 1.

HRIZONHHIGHWAYS FEBRUARY • 1951 . THIRTY-FIVE CENTS , l /jJI I\fj Spring has a good press. The poets make much ado about birds, bees, flowers and the sprightliness of the season. They neglect such mundane subjects as spring house cleaning and overlook the melancholy fact that armies with evil intentions march when the snow melts. We hope our only concern is with flowers, bees and birds and things like that. As for spring house cleaning, just open the doors and let the house air out. Why joust with vacuum cleaners and mops when spring beckons? Spring does a good job of beckoning in the desert land. It is our pleasure to show you some panoramas of the desert and desert plateau country when nature's fashion calls for spring dress. We wish we could promise the most colorful spring ever but the effiorescence of spring depends on the rainfall. We have had a darned dry "dry spell" hereabouts, broken only by a good rain in late January. If the rains keep on, then we can predict a real pretty March, April and May, but who the heck is going to be silly enough to try to tell whether it'll rain. Anyway, we'll promise you grand weather. An Arizona spring can't be beat. The weather had better be perfect! Sometime this month a group of wonderfully agile and extremely well paid young men who answer to the roll call of the Cleveland Indians, and another group of even more agile and even better paid young men who form the New York Yankees baseball team arrive in Tucson and Phoenix for spring training, the latter to get ready to defend the World's Championship, the former to try to bring it to Cleveland.

Postseason Recaps, Line Scores, Stats & Records World Champions 1955 World Champions For the Brooklyn Dodgers, the 1955 World Series was not just a chance to win a championship, but an opportunity to avenge five previous World Series failures at the hands of their chief rivals, the New York Yankees. Even with their ace Don Newcombe on the mound, the Dodgers seemed to be doomed from the start, as three Yankee home runs set back Newcombe and the rest of the team in their opening 6-5 loss. Game 2 had the same result, as New York's southpaw Tommy Byrne held Brooklyn to five hits in a 4-2 victory. With the Series heading back to Brooklyn, Johnny Podres was given the start for Game 3. The Dodger lefty stymied the Yankees' offense over the first seven innings by allowing one run on four hits en route to an 8-3 victory. Podres gave the Dodger faithful a hint as to what lay ahead in the series with his complete-game, six-strikeout performance. Game 4 at Ebbets Field turned out to be an all-out slugfest. After falling behind early, 3-1, the Dodgers used the long ball to knot up the series. Future Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Duke Snider each homered and Gil Hodges collected three of the club’s 14 hits, including a home run in the 8-5 triumph. Snider's third and fourth home runs of the Series provided the support needed for rookie Roger Craig and the Dodgers took Game 5 by a score of 5-3.
