In some countries, this is an alien concept; everyone that ‘works’ gets paid. Not so. Volunteers are an important part of Australian society. You can come across a volunteer without knowing and you don’t always have to know. There are many volunteers in government departments who work in partnership with volunteers across the state in a variety of ways to deliver a range of services to the general community. This concept makes opportunities to work with newly arrived migrants and refugees by providing a positive contribution to social inclusion in our increasingly diverse community. How does this affect WhittleseaU3A? We provide a wide range of social, physical and cultural activities, allowing members to participate at their own pace without the pressure of competition & performance expectations. These initiatives of WU3A are a demonstration of our objective of improving the utilisation of community resources to enable isolated members of our community to share in our WU3A classes and activities. The success of our efforts in completing mutually beneficial arrangements to enable quality classes and activities to be offered to our members has attracted approaches from Red Cross Australia and Life Without Barriers. The ‘Strengthening seniors inclusion and participation in local community’s project’ in which Whittlesea U3A is participating in with the City of Whittlesea Positive Aging Unit is progressing and providing Whittlesea U3A with the opportunity to establish partnering arrangements with local support organisation. These partnering arrangements have already enabled us to offer new supported classes and activities including: 1. Walking football in partnership with City of Whittlesea Positive Ageing Unit, Melbourne City Football Club and the Mill Park Netball stadium. 2. Chinese Medicine and Wellbeing delivered with the provision of tutors and subject experts from the Chinese Medicine Confucius Institute RMIT University. 3. Mosaics Class facilitated by Bunnings Epping who provide the Tutor, Venue and demonstration materials. 4. Utilisation of the Lalor Tennis Club facilities under a collaboration arrangement for Tennis and Craft classes. 5. Introduction of a monthly discussion group in the Township of Whittlesea with the support of the Yarra Plenty Regional Library Whittlesea Library. The Whittlesea Library is making available ‘Mr Whittle’ a new interactive robotic concept focused on enabling seniors to maintain social connection to the community.
