Shinkle Watch their story on Anna Slater our website at Bonnie Trainor, LCSW www.helpaidforwomen.org Our Mission With dozens of abortion clinics in the city of Chicago, Aid for Women’s pregnancy help centers are on the front line of the abortion battle. Aid for Women provides a safe refuge from abortion providers for thousands of women who are facing unexpected pregnancies. These women contact our 24-hour pregnancy helpline and visit our centers every day: “How much does an abortion cost?” “Do you offer the abortion pill?” “My parents will kick me out if I have this baby.” “I can’t afford to have a baby.” “I’m in college. I can’t have this baby.” “I’m already overwhelmed with the children I have.” The women who come to Aid for Women for help are the inner-city teenager, the married and college-educated woman in her thirties and every woman in between. The road that leads them to Aid for Women is a difficult one, and they face a tough journey ahead. These young abortion-vulnerable women live in a society that has failed to protect them and the life in their womb. THE TRAGIC REALITY AROUND US Over 57 million unborn babies have been victims of abortion in the United States since its legalization in 1973. That’s 1.3 million babies each year or 3,600 babies each day killed by abortion in the United States. In Cook County, Illinois, one out of four pregnancies ends in abortion. In 2016, a reported 21,747 babies were victims of abortion. That’s 60 abortions each day or one baby aborted every 24 minutes in Cook County. We are deeply grateful to OptionLine for their partnership in providing this critical service. COMPASSIONATE COUNSELING One-on-One Counseling Each client is provided with compassionate counseling. We discuss the development of her baby, abortion procedures and risks, adoption possibilities as well as address the underlying issues which are making her pregnancy decision difficult. We help the client address these issues, while guiding and supporting her in her pregnancy and in developing a plan for her future and that of her baby. PREGNANCY TESTS AND ULTRASOUND EXAMS Following a pregnancy test at one of our centers, a limited obstetrical ultrasound exam is available to the client after the seventh week of pregnancy. The ultrasound allows us to share the fetal age and approximate due date with the client as well as to rule out an ectopic pregnancy. The ultrasound exam also allows the client to observe her baby’s heartbeat and movements. Earn While You Learn 2 ABORTION PILL REVERSAL Most women who immediately have regret after taking the abortion pill have no idea that, if they act quickly, the effects of the abortion pill can be reversed, and they can still have a healthy baby. We are working diligently on outreach so that more women will know this life-saving procedure is available to them through our pregnancy help centers. MEDICAL AND COMMUNITY REFERRALS Our clients come to us with many different material, physical Client Support Group and emotional needs — including housing, food, employment, healthcare and relationship issues. Aid for Women has established partnerships with a network of medical and community agencies, including Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago and Presence Health hospitals and physicians, which allow us to better address and serve the needs of our clients and their families. EARN WHILE YOU LEARN (EWYL) PROGRAM Aid for Women clients are invited to join the Earn While You Learn Program (EWYL). By participating in this exciting and unique program, clients gain valuable knowledge about pregnancy and becoming the best parents they can be — all while earning new baby items along the way. Annual Client Christmas Party CLIENT SUPPORT GROUPS Our support groups meet regularly and provide an opportunity for clients to meet one another and receive ongoing support from Aid for Women throughout their pregnancies and beyond. Discussion topics include parenting, self-care, growing in faith and more! Residential Programs Many Aid for Women clients consider abortion because they lack adequate housing or will be otherwise homeless if they choose life. Many found this appalling and realized that, more than ever, something had to be done to defend the lives of these children and to provide support to women and teens facing unexpected pregnancies. Deacon Thomas Bresler One who acted decisively was Thomas Bresler, a newly ordained deacon at Holy Cross Catholic Church in suburban Deerfield, Illinois. He accepted this challenge as his mission, and in 1977, met with a small but eager group in his living room. On October 6, 1978, Deacon Bresler along with Nancy Corbett, Penny Crowley, Mary Kraychy and Mona Lukas opened Aid for Women, a pregnancy help center in Deerfield, Illinois, to serve the needs of women in the area and to offer alternatives to abortion. In 1981, a second location was opened at 8 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago’s downtown Loop to confront the abortion facilities opening throughout the city. Ann Covey Today, with a total of four pregnancy help centers and two residential programs, Aid for Women continues our founder’s legacy by providing compassionate care and practical support to thousands of women who are facing unexpected pregnancies each year. Sharing our history would not be complete without noting those individuals who have generously offered their time, talent and treasure for the past forty years to support and sustain Aid for Women’s mission of serving God by promoting and defending human life. We are deeply grateful to our pregnancy help center and residential program volunteers, Vitae Corps members, Board Rita “Heather” Bresler members, Auxiliary members, Junior Board members, event volunteers, community partners and the thousands of individuals and parishes who have given their financial support.
