HANDS-ON REVIEW CANON EOS 6D NOVEMBER 1ST 2013 1 6DREVIEW.COM Grand Canyon ABOUT ME (the author) 1/6 f/25 ISO 50 70-200mm F4 IS Canon EOS 6D I’m a landscape photographer based in San Francisco. Being out in the field shooting is one of the things I’m most passionate about. Getting published in books, magazines and galleries is rewarding, but I firmly believe the best photographer is the one having the most fun. I recently quit my IT career in silicon valley to pursue photography full-time, and to write reviews like the one you’re reading now. Your feedback is essential to dialing in the content, so if you have any feedback at all please don’t hesitate to get in touch directly. I know your time is valuable, so thanks for reading. [email protected] The Canon EOS 6D is the worlds smallest, lightest full-frame SLR on the market today. As Zeiss 50mm 1.4 Planar ZE with Canon EOS 6D body top left a travel and landscape photographer, I was quite intrigued by the ultralight factor and immediately bought one of the first copies to ship. This review is not based on marketing figures or datasheets. Instead this review will focus Canon 6D + 17-40mm with ND on real-world usage and results from the perspective of a working landscape photographer. I Filters and Intervalometer top left have no preference for Canon over Nikon, I own both and consider them equal. Price can be of major concern for many when considering the purchase of a camera, however this factor did not influence my impressions or decisions and is therefore absent from this review. Banff National Park right The first iteration of this review was published on March, 2013. At the time of writing 30s | f/22 | ISO 50 17-40mm Version 1 I had approximately four months of hands on experience with the 6D primarily in San Canon EOS 6D Francisco, California. Fast forward six months of consistent shooting and my experience with the 6D has yielded more accurate and balanced results. Not only have I learned quite a bit more about the intricacies of the camera, but I have taken the 6D to a fair number of wide ranging exotic and harsh environments, such as: Pinnacles NP, Yosemite NP, Kings Canyon NP, Sequoia NP, Death Valley NP, Grand Canyon NP, Big Sur (pacific ocean/coastline), Great Basin NP, Banff NP, and Jasper NP. Version 2 of the Hands-on Canon EOS 6D Review will revisit a number of points made in Version 1, and we’ll also take a new look at image quality results from the field, durability, GPS, WiFi, hardware quality and design. First, here’s an overview of the key features: - LIGHTEST FULL-FRAME BODY ON THE MARKET - INTEGRATED GPS - 3.0″ HIGH-RESOLUTION LCD - 5472x3648 PIXELS/20.2MP - FULL HD 1080P VIDEO - ISO 50-102,400 - INTEGRATED WIFI - DIGIC 5+ IMAGE PROCESSOR Canon 6D + Zeiss Planar 50 1.4 left Grand Canyon right 1/6 | f/25 | ISO 50 70-200mm F4 IS Canon EOS 6D Grand Teton National Park 4hr f/5.6 ISO 320 17-40mm L Canon EOS 6D Zion National Park 25s f/22 ISO 50 17-40mm L Canon EOS 6D Image Quality Canon implemented into the 6D a brand new 5+ also introduced chromatic aberration correction, Canon CMOS sensor with state-of-the-art technology. based on lens profiles which are stored in-camera and Pixel-level detail of this CMOS full-frame sensor is therefore limited to Canon’s own lenses. In addition, the capable of producing incredible detailed images with extra processing power allows the 6D to apply beautiful color rendition. I have printed large format chromatic aberration correction to JPEG images as prints from the 6D, up to 40x60, and the level of detail is well. These corrections are based on 29 Canon-created excellent. Compared to my 5D, 5DMkII, and 5DMkIII the lens profiles, which are stored on the camera and can print quality at these sizes is indistinguishable. In real-world results I still get the same slight The 6D has Canon’s most powerful image amount of chromatic aberration as I did previous to this processor, the DIGIC 5+. The 6D’s DIGIC 5+ processor feature implementation even with the best glass. is 17x faster than a DIGIC 4 and 30% faster than a DIGIC Theoretically it may be less than it was, but perceptibly 5. The image processor of a camera is responsible for it’s an insignificant advantage. It’s possible for Canon to reducing noise at higher ISOs, and the DIGIC 5+ modify these profiles through firmware updates, so represents the best to date. The introduction of DIGIC perhaps we’ll see better CA processing in the future. It has a great balance to it and the ergonomics are excellent. Without a built-in flash it has a very durable and rugged construction without any play or flex. The internal frame is of course metal, and the 6D’s front and rear body covers are Magnesium Alloy.
