LGBT Programming for Older Adults A Practical Step-by-Step Guide National Resource Center ON LGBT AGING CONTENTS DEAR SERVICE PROVIDER: LGBT Older Adults in Profile 5 Thank you for your interest in this guide, the fourth in a series of guides from SAGE’s National Resource Center on LGBT Aging for professionals interested in creating the LGBT - Specific Programming 6 best possible services and supports for all older adults, including those who are lesbian, Planning Your Program 9 gay, bisexual and/or transgender (LGBT). Since our launch in 2010, we have provided LGBT cultural competency training for thousands of service providers across the country. LGBT Movie Guide 14 Through these trainings, and through the technical assistance calls we receive, we often hear Movie Viewing: Sample Agenda 21 from people who are interested in creating an LGBT-inclusive program, but are unsure of where to start. Program Evaluation 24 Next Steps 26 These service providers know that as the U.S. population gets older, they must be prepared to meet the needs of a growing and diverse group of elders, including LGBT people. Recent Recommended Resources 29 estimates suggest that there are 3 million lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people Glossary 30 over age 55 in U.S., and this number will continue to grow exponentially. In a recent national health study it was found that LGBT older people widely fear accessing services, with transgender elders especially concerned because of high rates of being denied services or receiving inferior services. A 2011 Institute of Medicine report on LGBT health* identified transgender aging as a major research gap, citing a number of concerns facing transgender elders. -

This document contains a summary of recommendations presented during public hearings, through communication with individual Committee members, or through correspondence or communications submitted to the Committee. The WSD is designed to assist the Committee members in making decisions during the work session. Actions available to the Committee members include: (1) legislation to amend NRS; (2) transitory sections that do not amend the statutes; (3) resolutions; (4) statements in the Committee’s final report; and (5) letters of recommendation or support. The Committee may accept, reject, modify, or take no action on any of the proposals. The recommendations contained herein do not necessarily have the support or opposition of the Committee. MA LGBT Aging Commission Report to the Legislature 2019 - 2020
MA LGBT Aging Commission Report to the Legislature 2019 - 2020 This is a report of the Massachusetts Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Aging (MA LGBT), as required by M.G.L. Chapter 3, Section 71. Commission Activities: 2019 2019 is the five-year anniversary of the creation of the MA LGBT Aging Commission and 2020 is the five year anniversary of the Commission’s Report that outlined a comprehensive review of Long Term Supports and Services, Public Health, Housing, Senior Centers and Social Engage- ment and Legislation impacting the lives of LGBT older adults and caregivers in Massachusetts. To recognize this milestone, the Commission dedicated the year’s quarterly meetings to hosting public listening sessions for LGBT older adults, caregivers, elder care providers, and LGBT community members. The intent was to provide the public with an update on the Commission’s work of the past five years, and to learn more about what issues were of current importance to LGBT older adults, caregivers and elder care providers. The LGBT Aging Commission hosted three regional public listening sessions: Cape and Islands: June 2019 at the Barnstable Council on Aging Co-chairs: Senator Becca Rausch and Representative Sarah Peake Summary: Participants focused on unmet needs on the Cape and Islands, particularly regarding lack of public transportation and reliance on driving oneself or others. There was much discus- sion about lack of resources regarding grief, bereavement of loved ones and the need for local groups for both emotional and practical support. Local LGBT older adults very much engaged with the Orleans Council on Aging monthly supper club that hosts up to 70 guests monthly. -
