The Trophy CabINeT Guy Hansen Rugby league is a game that teaches you lessons. My big lesson Looking back to those days I realise that football was very much came in 1976 when the mighty Parramatta Eels were moving in part of the fabric of the Sydney in which I grew up. The possibility a seemingly unstoppable march towards premiership glory. As of grand final glory provided an opportunity for communities to a 12-year-old, the transformation of Parramatta from perennial take pride in the achievements of the local warriors who went cellar-dwellers was a formative event. I had paid my dues with into battle each weekend. Winning the premiership for the first fortnightly visits to Cumberland Oval and was confident that a time signalled the coming of age for a locality and caused scenes Parramatta premiership victory was just around the corner. In the of wild celebration. Parramatta’s victory over Newtown in 1981 week before the grand final I found myself sitting on a railway saw residents of Sydney’s western city spill onto the streets in bridge above Church Street, Parramatta, watching Ray Higgs, a spontaneous outpouring of joy. Children waved flags from the the legendary tackling machine and Parramatta captain, lead family car while Dad honked the horn. Some over-exuberant fans the first-grade team on a parade through the city. -

Auction 244 Page:1 Lot Type Grading Description Est $A FOOTBALL - RUGBY LEAGUE Virtually all of the lots in this section are from the collection of Clive Churchill, universally acknowledged as one of the greatest rugby league players of all-time. Hailing from Newcastle where he was a schoolboy prodigy, Churchill joined South Sydney Rabbitohs as a 20yo in 1947 and played there until 1958, winning five premierships. He returned to the club as coach and between 1967 & 1975 took his team to a further four premierships. Clive Churchill was also a key member of the New South Wales 'Blues' and retired as the most-capped Australian international player. A deep thinker about the game, Churchill - dubbed 'The Little Master - played with remarkable flair and essentially re-invented the position of fullback and, in 2008, was named the game's Fullback of the Century. A stand at the Sydney Cricket Ground is named in his honour and, since 1986, the Clive Churchill Medal has been awarded each year to the player judged Best on Ground in the Grand Final. 458 Balance of Clive Churchill's collection including 'A Centenary of Rugby League 1908-2008' presentation copy to 100 Greatest Players; tickets 1948 England v Wales & 1959 Great Britain v Australia; 1950s-90s magazines with 'Sporting Life' (12), 'Sports Novels' (5) & 'Rugby League Week' (8); 'Golden Players from Rugby League's Golden Years'; Col Joye signed photo; Hunter River Hall of Fame booklet; 2003 Sydney's Greatest Ever Sports Stars programme; DVDs (6) & cassettes (2).
