The Rector readily accepted my offer to transcribe the registers using a word processor. The baptism registers have been transcribed in two volumes covering the period 1796-1896; this is Volume 2 covering the period 1843-1896. As with all documents of this nature the original should be consulted to confirm that entries have been transcribed and indexed accurately. Scanned images of the registers may be viewed at www.derryloran.com. The following specific points should be borne in mind when using the transcript: Dates All dates have been standardised as follows; day in numbers, month in three letters (abbreviated as necessary), year. Obvious errors are shown in bold. Legibility and Spelling In cases of doubt, the spelling of surnames has been checked against other entries in the index; variations in the spelling of the same surname have been noted. Some of the entries in the 1880s were very difficult to read; indecipherable details are marked with a ?. Missing information is shown by a ~. Additional Information Marginal notes and comments from the Registers appear in the text in (brackets) or as footnotes; additional information provided by the compiler appears in [square brackets]. Confirmation lists for the following years have survived: 1843 – at the back of the first baptism register 1846 – at the back of the first baptism register 1849 – at the front of the first baptism register 1852 – at the back of the first baptism register 1856 – at the back of the first baptism register They have been transcribed and appear as appendices to this document. Chronological Discrepancies Entries out of chronological order by more than a week or so are in italics. The Index The index lists in alphabetical order all persons who were baptised at Derryloran over the period 1843-1896. Abbreviated Christian names have been transcribed exactly as they appear in the Register. History of the Church and Parish The publication The Oak Grove of Luran – A History of Derryloran Parish Church by the current Rector, Canon R J N Porteus (Derryloran Select Vestry, 2000), is a comprehensive and very readable book on the subject. The details of clergy are based on the relevant lists in Armagh Clergy 1800- 2000 by Rev W E C Fleming (2001).   • Clarence Harold Wilkinson
    PHOTO (courtesy x) Clarence Harold Wilkinson (1864-1922) was born 5 September 1864 to Alexander and Jane Wilkinson in West Maitland, NSW, where he attended the public school and sat junior examinations in 1880. In August 1881 Clarence sought employment with the City of Sydney as an articled pupil. By December 1881 the City’s Finance Committee recommended the appointment of Wilkinson in the City Architect's Department, noting he had completed three months' trial, with an annotation of commendation by T.H. Sapsford, the City Architect. By December 1884, having completed his articles, Wilkinson was placed on the staff as a draftsman with a salary of £125 p.a.. Clarence was a first prize winner in architecture at Sydney Technical College in recognition of studies during 1884. Wilkinson occupied some of his spare time as a member of the volunteer services, acting as a second lieutenant by 1884, and promoted to first lieutenant in 1888. By 1888 Wilkinson was the assistant city architect and building surveyor to the Municipality of Sydney, but he resigned in mid-1889. Clarence advertised with his brother Lancelot Alexander Wilkinson in the Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser from October 1899 as ‘Wilkinson & Wilkinson, Architects and Licensed Surveyors’, having offices in Sydney, Newcastle and West Maitland. With poor economic conditions in late 1890, Clarence abandoned his efforts on the east coast and soon travelled to the other side of Australia, seeking greater opportunities. Wilkinson joined the Western Australian Public Works Department (PWD) in Perth, working on a number of railway buidings. He resigned from the PWD at the end of June 1892, and after a few years as a sole practitioner, entered into partnership with E.H.

    A Seed is Sown 1884-1900 (1) Before the GAA From the earliest times, the people of Ireland, as of other countries throughout the known world, played ball games'. Games played with a ball and stick can be traced back to pre-Christian times in Greece, Egypt and other countries. In Irish legend, there is a reference to a hurling game as early as the second century B.C., while the Brehon laws of the preChristian era contained a number of provisions relating to hurling. In the Tales of the Red Branch, which cover the period around the time of the birth of Christ, one of the best-known stories is that of the young Setanta, who on his way from his home in Cooley in County Louth to the palace of his uncle, King Conor Mac Nessa, at Eamhain Macha in Armagh, practised with a bronze hurley and a silver ball. On arrival at the palace, he joined the one hundred and fifty boys of noble blood who were being trained there and outhurled them all single-handed. He got his name, Cuchulainn, when he killed the great hound of Culann, which guarded the palace, by driving his hurling ball through the hound's open mouth. From the time of Cuchulainn right up to the end of the eighteenth century hurling flourished throughout the country in spite of attempts made through the Statutes of Kilkenny (1367), the Statute of Galway (1527) and the Sunday Observance Act (1695) to suppress it. Particularly in Munster and some counties of Leinster, it remained strong in the first half of the nineteenth century.

    Issue 6 Page !1 Brave Record Dungannon and Moy’s rich and varied naval service - Submariner WW1 - Polar expertise aided Arctic convoys - Leading naval surgeon - Naval compass inventor - Key role at Bletchley Park Northern Ireland - Service in the Royal Navy - In Remembrance Issue 6 Page !2 Moy man may be Northern Ireland’s first submariner loss HM Submarine D5 was lost on 03/11/1914. In the ship was 29 year old Fred Bradley. He had previously served during the Boer War. He had also served in HMS Hyacinth in the Somali Expedition. HMS D5 was a British D class submarine built by Vickers, Barrow. D5 was laid down on 23/2/1910, launched 28/08/1911 and was commissioned 19/02/1911. One source states she was sunk by a German mine laid by SMS Stralsund after responding to a German attack on Yarmouth by cruisers. The bombardment, which was very heavy and aimed at the civilian population, was rather ineffective, due to the misty weather and only a few shells landed on the beaches at Gorleston. In response, the submarines D3, E10 and D5 - the latter being under the command of Lt.Cdr. Godfrey Herbert, were ordered out into the roadstead to intercept the enemy fleet. Northern Ireland - Service in the Royal Navy - In Remembrance Issue 6 Page !3 Another source states HMS D5 was sunk by a British mine two miles south of South Cross Buoy off Great Yarmouth in the North Sea. 20 officers and men were lost. There were only 5 survivors including her Commanding Officer.

    Smythe-Wood Newspaper Index – “A” series – mainly Co Tyrone Irish Genealogical Research Society Dr P Smythe-Wood’s Irish Newspaper Index Selected families, mainly from Co Tyrone ‘Series A’ The late Dr Patrick Smythe-Wood presented a large collection of card indexes to the IGRS Library, reflecting his various interests, - the Irish in Canada, Ulster families, various professions etc. These include abstracts from various Irish Newspapers, including the Belfast Newsletter, which are printed below. Abstracts are included for all papers up to 1864, but excluding any entries in the Belfast Newsletter prior to 1801, as they are fully available online. Dr Smythe-Wood often found entries in several newspapers for the one event, & these will be shown as one entry below. Entries dealing with RIC Officers, Customs & Excise Officers, Coastguards, Prison Officers, & Irish families in Canada will be dealt with in separate files, although a small cache of Canadian entries is included here, being families closely associated with Co Tyrone. In most cases, Dr Smythe-Wood has recorded the exact entry, but in some, marked thus *, the entries were adjusted into a database, so should be treated with more caution. There are further large card indexes of Miscellaneous notes on families which are not at present being digitised, but which often deal with the same families treated below.
