GPS Rugby Brief History

GPS Rugby is the successor in name to GPS Old Boys Rugby Club and to the Past Grammar School Football Club and it is the oldest surviving Rugby Club in Queensland and alsoone of the oldest Rugby Clubs in Australia. The Club was officially formed in 1887 and consisted of a combination of both past and present Brisbane Grammar School players although a number of them represented Queensland as Past Grammar players in 1885 and 1886.

In 1889 the Past Grammar School Football Club was established as a separate identity distinct from the old side with its mix of past and present players. The Club was formalised at a meeting held on the 5th March 1891 and Mr. R.H. Roe, the Headmaster of Brisbane Grammar School was elected as President. Sir Charles Lilley and Sir Samuel Griffith, among others, were elected as Vice Presidents. It was decided that the Club colours would be red and white. Rugby was not played in Queensland from 1916 until reintroduced in 1928 when, under a new name, the BGS Old Boys’ Football Club again took its place in the Brisbane competition.

In 1930 the constitution of the Club was changed to allow past students from the other GPS schools to become members and although the name was retained that year it was later changed to GPS Old Boys’ Rugby Club and it played in green and blue colours for the first time in the 1931 season. Later the constitution was again changed and membership of the club made unrestricted.

Fifty of the Club’s members have played for Australia and over 200 have played for Queensland. Seven have captained Australian senior teams, two the Australian sevens team and one has represented and captained England and another Scotland.

Ashgrove GPS Junior Rugby Club was formed from the Ashgrove Emus Club in 1984 when it affiliated with GPS Old Boys after that club moved from Finsbury Park to Ashgrove Sports Ground. It quickly grew to be the largest Junior Club in Brisbane winning the QJRU President’s trophy for the most successful club on a number of occasions.

In 2014 GPS Old Boys Rugby Club amalgamated with Ashgrove GPS Junior Rugby Club to form GPS Rugby Club making it the largest club in Australia with almost 1500 players. In 2018 the Amalgamated club won its first premiership and in 2019 won the Australian Clun Championship.

7 GPS RUGBY CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2019

President’s Report

It is a pleasure to present my 2019 Year Annual Report for GPS Rugby Union Club Inc. The Season commenced with the Club taking out our first Australian Club Championship. I also congratulate our 2nd Grade team on winning the Premiership. It took 108 minutes and triple overtime to beat Brothers 28-25. To Coaches Sid Kite, Nigel Hogan and Paul Robson, Manager Al Berriman, players and support staff – Well done!!

Rugby We fielded 10 senior teams in 2019, participated in 7 semi-finals, 2 grand finals and won 2nd Grade. We can certainly build on this going into 2020. We finished 4th in the Doughty Shield for overall club performance. A special mention to our women’s team for their hard-fought performance in the finals this year.

The Golden Gallopers formally joined the club in 2019 and always good to see some of our older talent still in the boots and running around albeit a bit slower.

Our juniors fielded some 61 teams in 2019 with some 839 players. Our junior touch football competition for girls saw 97 girls participate. We fielded two teams in the Inclusive Rugby Program. Our Pony Club had 49 participants.

It was pleasing to see our coaching program implemented from seniors to juniors for the first time in 2019. I’d like to thank Elwee Prinsloo our Director of Rugby together with all coaching Staff from seniors to juniors for the hard work here. This certainly can be built on in 2020. It is important that we as a club deliver a consistent and well planned out program of skills development.

Sponsors A Club our size would not operate without the generous support of our sponsors.

A special thanks goes out to Ken Baker and Height for Hire for being our principle sponsor for 2019 and signing up again for 2020.

Thanks must also go out to Major Sponsors for 2019 – McDonald’s Newmarket, Hart Sport, Midas Ashgrove, Meat at Billy’s, XXXX, Wonder White, BLK, and Witches Falls, many who have supported us for many years now.

The cash reserves of the club continue to be used to ensure the facilities are maintained and over time brought up to date.

Volunteers A club of our size relies heavily on the volunteers which makes it the successful community club that it is. A very special thanks to those who gave up their time this year. The support from volunteers with coaching, managing, assisting with ground set up, working behind the canteen or bar and assisting with functions and events has contributed to a successful season.

Staff The Club’s employees put in a tremendous amount of time and effort during the Rugby season. A very special thanks to Anthony Herbert our CEO who puts in an enormous amount of time and effort to see the club excel and continues to improve the experience at the club. Facilities Field 2 Lighting replacement was completed at a cost of $305,000. The club completed this project with the help of the local state member Kate Jones and Valleys Cricket. We were also fortunate to receive funding from the BCC ($78,000) Steven Toomey which ensured we were able to replace the bulbs on field 3 with LEDs.

We continue to move forward in respect to planning for improvement to the Ashgrove Sports Ground following the release of the concept plan last year. The concept has been broken down to approach in affordable phases. Phase 1 and 2 focus on the Club Houses. Details on this was released last month with more details to come as we progress into 2020. The focus will be on Female Change rooms, Admin Offices, Gym and a refurbished function room.

9 GPS RUGBY CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2019

Rugby Report

Introduction 2019 saw GPS competing with 11 senior teams from which 7 teams made the finals series and Reserve Grade winning their respective competition. It was a season that included plenty of high’s but also some challenges as you would expect.

The season started off with Premier Grade claiming the club’s 1st ever Australian Club Championship trophy by beating Sydney University in the fixture played at Ballymore. This was a great start and good reward for what was a big off and pre-season. Premier grade went on to win 13 out of their 16 games in the regular season losing two of these fixtures by only a point. Their progress was brought to a halt by losing both the major semi and preliminary final. The positive was that Reserve grade went on to win their Grand Final in double overtime which was some reward for the hard work put into the premier grade squad over the season.

Season We commenced our preseason preparation during the middle of October 2018 with a bigger focus on small and positional group training and skill development. The 3 groups included premier grade, general grades and a colt’s program. We also designed the colts’ program to be more aligned with premier grade and included a well-structured mentor component where colts players were partnered with premier grade players for this part of the season. Most session were conducted off site to ensure players stay mentally fresh and engaged.

The boys got back together during the 2nd week of January to start our preparation for our 1st ever attempt to conquer the Australian Club Championship. Everything in terms of training was stepped up a level and more effort went into how we wanted to play. The boy’s efforts were rewarded by an outstanding come from behind win in wet conditions against a strong Sydney Uni team at Ballymore.

We started the regular season with a 1-point loss with several players out due to injury after the ACC. This however was short lived as the Prems team went on to win the next 9 games in a row and eventually locking down 2nd spot with a bonus point separating us and 1st placed Brothers at the end.

All other grades were able to make the 4 after some very challenging times in terms of player availability but excellent team work to ensured we all got in.

Colts experienced a tough year that was made hard by losing a handful of games with less than 10 points. The focus in the coming off-season will certainly be to recruit and develop our squad to ensure they once again make the top 4.

We had a huge number of volunteers, coaches and managers looking after the group in terms of new registration processes, medicals, game day management and general logistics. Without the efforts of these people involved none of our progress or success would be possible as a club.

A big thank you also to all club staff especially Herbie for their work around the club to ensure the players, coaches and supporters have an enjoyable year.

Representative We welcomed back the Smith twins to Yoku Road with the addition of Bryce Hegarty also returning to the Reds. During the season it was great to also see Campbell Magnay back in the green and blue. Bobby Tuttle’s season was unfortunately cut short due to a second achilles rapture in 12 months. It was great to see their eagerness to assist and be part of the club whenever they were not playing . A number of players also made the NRC squads. Tuaina Tualima, Maile Ngauamo, Maaloga Konelio, Smith Twins and Bryce Hegarty were included in the Brisbane City team with Tom Kibble, Jethro Felemi and Fred Burke selected to play for country. The most notable achievement for the season was Alisha Hewett that was selected in the Wallaroos team to play in a Test series against the Silver Ferns and Japan.

10 GPS RUGBY CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2019

Sevens The QPR 7’s commences on the 7th September and the squad was led by retiring player Brendan Trudgen and assisted in the coaching duties by 3rd grade head coach Brenden Hood. The 7’s squad has great blend of upcoming Colts, grades and premier grade players with the addition of a couple of new recruits to further bolster the side. The competition included 4 tournaments with min 3 fixtures per day played at Premier grade clubs around Brisbane.

Academy and Juniors 2019 saw us introduce our new performance (academy) program that consisted of 16 invited players from top schools in Brisbane. The feedback received was excellent and that was a credit to the planning and efforts of Drew Vautin managing this program. 2020 will see this program grow to at least 20 players with last year’s group now transitioning into our colts program.

We made some really good progress in our junior coaching development starting the year with a well organised coaching symposium in February which saw some top presenters sharing their knowledge with a group of 86 coaches. Once again, we will be looking to make this event bigger and better in 2020.

Our senior player engagement in the junior program through some skill specific sessions as well as general coaching assistance was stepped up a level as well as our ability to provide some learning and development opportunities for coaches throughout the season. We are now in the process of planning a junior academy to commence in November to further develop our young players and coaches.

General 2020 will see us reintroducing a club leadership group with a massive emphasis on club culture. We want to ensure our culture and our performance stay in line with our values of being an inclusive well-run community club.

Thank you to all the people that contributed to another successful season. This included but is not limited to:

Our sponsors, our families, the GPS Board, all our players and volunteers including medical, coaches and strength and conditioning staff

As always, it’s is an honour to be part of Jeeps and I’m very excited to keep working on our progress as club and our mission to become a real powerhouse in QLD rugby.

Juniors Report

2019 has been another successful season for the GPS Juniors. With about 850 players in 73 teams and about 100 girls touch players supported by a great volunteer support group of coaches, managers and referees coming together to provide an efficient and enjoyable rugby program for all.

The Inclusive Junior Gallopers Rugby Program designed for kids with learning disabilities has continued with many thanks to Leanne Mead and Sarah Meka for pulling it together and Head Coach Beau Harvey for doing a great job coaching them. Each player has a buddy to whom we say – “fantastic job”

This year we also continued with Girls Touch on a Monday Night with an increased number of registrations. The season went for eight weeks and was once again supported by a great group of Volunteers. In particular, we would like to thank our Ladies Rugby Team for running the competition.

GPS Juniors once again performed well with great representation at the QRU finals series. Of the teams eligible to compete for Premierships (u13-17) four won Grand Finals Under 15 Orange, Under 14 Blue, Under 14 Silver and Under 13 Blue.

GPS Rugby has always figured strongly in the Representative rugby pathways and 2019 was no exception. The club had players involved in the U12 Development Pathway, the U13 – 16 BJRU Teams and Queensland. These players are listed on page 7 of this report.

The biggest thanks go to the Coaches, Managers and Age Group Coordinators who make it all happen each week. As can be seen from above it remains a huge task and a reflection on the quality players, coaches, managers and support staff that give up their time each week for the betterment of Rugby and the life development of the junior players.

Martin Southwood Operations Manager

Gallopers Inclusive Rugby Program

The Inclusive Rugby Program is a recent addition to the Gallopers club. It is a program where boys and girls with additional learning and social needs get to play in a team, develop motor and social skills and most importantly be part of the GPS community.

In 2019 the program comprised of 2 teams, an original team where players were matched with a buddy to train and play beside and the 7’s team where buddy support was reduced and field size increased.

This season both teams trained together on a Friday night and then played on Saturday mornings over an eight-week program. The original team played against each other and the 7’s team played games against different teams from within the GPS community enjoying competitive matches against U16, U15, U14, GPS Ladies team, a GPS dad’s team and a team from Enoggera Barracks. Our season break up coincided with a premier home game and allowed our players the opportunity to show case their skills at half time.

By playing against teams within the GPS community the program aims to raise awareness and build understanding.

Thanks to some of the premier grade players who came and supported us at our final training run, our fabulous coaches Beau and Oscar, our inspiring buddy’s and the amazing Martin Southward for his patience in accommodating the needs of our players.

On behalf of GPS Inclusive Rugby program, we would like to thank the Club for supporting this very important program and we look forward to bigger and better things in the seasons to come.

Premier Grade

Coaches: Elwee Prinsloo, Nick Fogarty (Backs), Brandan Gabbett (Forwards). Trainers: Rory Maguire, Kieran Maguire, Josh Wessels. Physiotherapy: Geoff Clarke, Chris Howard, Manager: John Richards.

The GPS Rugby Club Premier Grade Team finished second in the minor premiership for season 2019 and third at the end of the finals series. The season started in magnificent fashion with the club securing the Australian Club Championship trophy defeating Sydney University at Ballymore 37 - 31 after trailing by 17 points leading in to the second half. It was the first time the club has won the cup since it was first played in 1908 and the first time a Brisbane club has taken the title since 2009.

At the end of the regular season the team had lost only three games, the same as the minor premiers, and were well placed going into the finals. They met Brothers in the major semi-final losing 48-40 in what many commentators have described as one of the best games of club football played in Brisbane for many years. The difficult loss was followed by defeat at the hands of University of Queensland in the preliminary final 34 - 14 when GPS was reduced to twelve players and no front-rowers in a difficult completion to their 2019 campaign.

With a bye in the first round following the Australian Club Championship the team had a very narrow loss against Easts in atrocious weather in their first competition game of the year. That was followed by seven straight wins to finish in second place at the end of the first round making them eligible to contest the Welsby Cup when they met Brothers in the second round. Defeats in round 12 at the hand of Bond University and a very narrow loss the following week on Torkington Daly Cup Day at home were the only two blemishes for the team in the second round in their march to the finals. The win against Brothers in the Welsby Cup game was a real highlight with the team showing they could play with flair as well as dominating the set piece. In the final round they regained the Halley Appleby Cup with a resounding win over University of Queensland. The team once again held the Bunter Bowl for the longest period of any club in the competition, ultimately giving it up to Bond University when they were invited to take it to the Canal for their round twelve clash.

The team welcomed a number of new players for season 2019, most notably Maile Ngauamo, Jethro Felemi, Tuaina Taii Tualima and Alex Samoa. The core of the team from 2018 remained and played to expectations. The team was also well supported by players who are genuine contenders in 2020 for Premier Grade spots including Bernard Nickel, Matt Lieder, Jed Chapman and Emosi Tuquiri. Tuquiri would go on to represent Fiji in the Under-20s World Rugby Cup in 2019 and is a genuine prospect for future representative honours. The Grand Final victory by the second-grade team has certainly produced a number of players who will be vying for a place in the Premier Grade 2020 team, a very healthy position for the club going forward. While it was by most measures a successful season for the team, many believed that there is unfinished business with the 2020 season looming. It is good to see hard-running lock Ollie Bartlett has got the chance to play rugby in Scotland, but the core of the team is expected to return in the 2020 year.

Special mention must go to the enormous amount of work undertaken by head coach Elwee Prinsloo. He has a genuine desire to continue to improve the skillset, both physically and mentally, for each and every player that he coaches. He was ably assisted by assistants Nick Fogarty and Brendan Gabbett. Special mention must also go to trainers Rory and Keiran Maguire from Science of Fitness. Their dedication to the team goes well beyond what is normally expected of a trainer. RM Physio, Chris Howard and Dr Peter Stickler also need to be thanked for their assistance throughout the year. Fraser Brydon provided invaluable assistance on game day both with side-line management and moving gear around between various grounds and for his efforts the team is most grateful.

The team would also particularly like to thank Anthony Herbert and his team at the club for their support of Premier Grade, and all the grades throughout 2019. Anthony provides a special effort which is noticed by all, who are very grateful for that assistance. Thanks also to Club President Michael Taylor and his Management Committee, as well as our publicity team headed by Rob Melloy, Abbey Hurley and Matthew Muller. Particular thanks also to the many fans, supporters and sponsors of the Club. Their genuine love of the Club and the Premier Grade team is on display most weekends. To the Premier Grade team themselves, congratulations on being a hard-working, loyal and dedicated team. Good luck in all your endeavours on and off the field and we look forward to the 2020 season.

Second (Reserve) Grade

Coach: Nigel Hogan, Marius van der Merwe Manager: Allan Berriman

It is not a slight on the team to state that this year’s second grade was not the most talented to have won a second-grade premiership. However, they proved to be one of the one of the most mentally tough groups as proven in their premiership victory.

With a blend of seasoned veterans and young up and comers, the men were able to complete the regular season in 3rd place. The road to that point was not smooth sailing as a mid-season form slump meant winning the last four games were essential to ensure they could play Sunday rugby. To their enormous credit, they responded to this challenge by taking these victories, with the most notable against our eventual opponents in the grand final – who had, up to that point, had not lost a game for two seasons.

The men comfortably accounted for Souths 39-12 in the minor semi and by the finest of margins overcame a tough Wests outfit 21-19 in the preliminary final. The final proved to be all time classic against a team that had been thoroughly dominant all season. The men from Yoku Road outlasted the Brethren via two overtimes and a golden point period to come out victors 28-25 via a Tom Christie penalty after 107 minutes of play.

It is a positive sign for the future of the club that the grand final team included 2 colts and a number of players who were in their first or second year of playing grade. Special mention needs to go to the team Captain – Cameron King and Vice-Captain – Tom Christie for the way they kept the group together and led from the front, in good times and bad. They showed the young men following them what it took to represent the jersey on and off the field in a manner befitting the history and legacy of the club. Also, the example shown by club stalwarts Isaac Weir, Chris Spurling, Troy Simkin and Nicholas Richards were instrumental in creating a culture that ultimately led to the results achieved by the group.

Thank you to Marius Van Der Merwe, who coached the team in the first half of the year but could not continue due to personal reasons. Special thank you and acknowledgement must go to the men who were at the heart of this year’s team off the field – Paul Robson, Al Berriman and Nigel Hogan – who deservedly received the club honour of coach of the year in 2019. The boys enjoyed their season due to the culture created by this group and appreciated the obvious time and effort that was put in for the benefit of the team.

Thank you to the GPS Committee for your support in 2019, but most of all thank you to the supporters, members and volunteers that make GPS awesome. We hope we gave you something to cheer about!

Third Grade

Coaches: Brendan Hood, Paul Robson Manager Lachlan Hastings

Pre-Season for all players not in the premier squad commenced on Nov 21, 2018 for a quick 5-week pre-Christmas hit out. Official pre-season commenced January 8 with a healthy squad of players keen to impress for the new coaches across the grades in 2019.

3s started the season slowly with a tight loss to East’s away in round 1, however used the lessons learnt in this game to start a strong run of wins to the halfway point of the season. Finishing with dominant performances to beat the previously unbeaten Brothers side and an always strong UQ for the final 2 games of round 1 to finish 3rd at this point of the season.

In the 2nd round 3s started strong beating Easts in round 10 yet faded away to lose the final 3 games of the season before finals and finished in 4th spot overall for the season.

In the minor knock out semi-final GPS met a strong Easts teams and unfortunately lost 17-6 in a tight game after leading 6-0 early.

I would like to thank Lachlan Hastings for undertaking the managers role in 2019 and doing an amazing job as he decided to not play this season.

Also, thank you to Paul Robson and Zachary Russell-Sharam for sharing the backs role in 2019. Paul stepped in late in the pre-season and was promoted to 2nd grade at the halfway point of the season. Zach was a late inclusion from the premier colt’s program in 2019 and both men were brilliant in their guidance and development of the playing group.

Finally, thank you to all players who pulled on a 3rd grade jersey to play or bench in 2019. This has been a challenging year for 3rd grade, particularly late in the season with lots of changes each week, and it is a credit to the playing group for how well the team performed. Congratulations to all those who made their 3s debut and to those who secured roles in the premier squad as a result of their performances in 3s during the season.

Looking forward to another successful season in 2020

Fourth Grade

Coaches: Oliver McCall, Rob Southwood. Manager: Tim Sullivan

Season 2019 was a testament to the character of the 4th grade team as they showed great character to climb the ladder in the back half of the season to finish in the top four, going down to the eventual premiers (Souths) in the preliminary final.

With only two wins and sitting in 7th place at the mid-way point of the season, the team was able to dig deep, finishing the regular season in the top four and progressing to finals. Some key wins along the way included a 24-10 vs Easts after the mid- year bye, a turning point win away at Norths in which we kept the opposition scoreless, and big win against Uni in the final round at home which confirmed the team’s place in the finals.

The minor semi saw 4th grade take on Easts, with the results spilt 1 win a piece during the regular season. Featuring some Colts among the regular starters, the team was able to grind out a tight 19-15 victory sending them through to the preliminary final to face Souths, the eventual premiers.

4th Grade was heavily affected by injury and player movement between grades this season, so it was a testament to the resilience and character of the players to pull together for a string finish to the season. A big thankyou goes to all players who pulled on a 4th grade jersey this year.

Special mention must also go to the coaches. Both Oliver McCall and Rob Southwood did an excellent job this year in preparing the team each week, with the results reflecting the fact that the players enjoyed playing for them and were willing to put in the work to turn things around to get the results on Saturdays.

We look forward to a successful 2020.

Fifth Grade

Coaches: Mike Proctor, Sam Scott. Manager: Adam Nelson

Season 2019 began with a quite determination by both coaches to replicate the successes of 6th Grade the previous season and this proved prophetic with 5th Grade starting the season with a five (5) from five (5) record.

These results I think ensured the players bought into what we were trying to do and whilst the following games versus Brothers and UQ proved to be a mixed bag, these collective results really began to resonate with the players that something ‘special’ was in the wind.

The second round commenced with what I think was probably one of the best performances of the year versus Souths. Souths came to Yoku Road looking to assert their position in the top 4 however the Gallopers had other ideas and came away with a very pleasing and hard fought 27-5 win.

Some mixed results followed the Souths game however a momentum had taken shape within the team and whilst all grades succumbed to the chill of winter and the pull of splendor, finals footy beckoned for 5th Grade.

A less than ideal result in the major semi-final ensured some strong lessons were learned post this loss to Brothers and these were put into practice against a very physical Norths team with the Gallopers prevailing with some very entertaining coast to coast tries in the later stages to ensure a thrilling 31-22 win.

The first half of the Grand Final did not go the way we would have liked versus Brothers and whilst it would be fair to say we probably failed to convert early pressure into points, pushed some passes we shouldn’t have, the Gallopers did come back to make the score a little more respectable eventually going down 27-12.

Special mention must go to the colts who came into 5th Grade during the finals campaign. The Gallopers are in good hands with the likes of Ben Gerraghty, Hugh Scott, Tom Dangerfield and Matt Thomas stepping up and playing exceptionally well throughout our finals campaign.

Thanks also must go to the senior playing group led by Drew Nelson, Chris Jenkins and towards the back end, Nick Dangerfield & Brett Frostick. From a coach’s perspective, player buy-in is the backbone of any success, but it cannot be underestimated how much of an influence a good quality senior playing group can have on the younger men as well.

It would also be remiss of me to not mention Masara Kobayashi. An absolute pleasure to coach and a try scoring machine. Special thanks also to my co-coach Sam Scott for his time and dedication to his role as well as Adam Nelson for his management of the team throughout the season.

A disappointing way to finish the season but none-the-less, plenty to look forward to in 2020

Sixth Grade

Coaches: Dan Bodice, Nathan Freeney. Manager: Nathan Shaw

This year we ran two teams in 6th grade instead of running a team in subdistricts. The competition in the grade was of a high standard this season, with two strong Brothers teams and Easts, Norths and Wests fielding their strongest teams in a number of years. While travel outside of Brisbane was not required this year, the scheduling of two teams in the same competition frequently tested our depth and saw the boys playing 2 or 3 games on several weekends throughout the year.

The 6(1) team performed strongly. With a lot of transition of players up and down the grades early in the season, consistency became an issue. While injuries and absences hit the team hard late in the season (and forced 1 forfeit), the boys performed well and placed second on the ladder at the end of the season behind Brothers 1. The 6(2) team, the natural successor to the Normanby Cup team of the last few years, improved again this year. Hit with the same injuries and absences as the 6(1) team towards the end of the year, two forfeits pushed the team down the ladder and removed any hope of making finals, but the steady improvement the team is showing every season is sure to establish Yoku Rd on Friday nights as the fortress of Brisbane Club Rugby. Special mention to Josh Clutterbuck who worked hard for this team all season both on and off the park and received the coveted “Spirit of Friday night” award at the unofficial awards night a few weeks ago.

While the performance of the combined team in finals was disappointing, we came up against strong opposition and learnt that we need to work on the consistency throughout the year to have a better dig next year.

Women

Coaches: Mote Kite, Sean Minehan, Naki Kamakorewa. Manager: Funaki Loco

The GPS women’s team had a mixed season in an expanded and more competitive women’s competition in 2019. The team experienced its best-ever start to a season, losing only one match throughout the entire first round. The team maximised a strong pre-season and a higher level of core skills as compared to previous years which increased overall training quality and overall playing performance. However, the team faced adversity in the second round of the season due to representative selections and the unavailability of a number of players throughout the second round.

The ladies were able to achieve several impressive performances throughout the 2019 season. Perhaps the most striking of these results was a 113-0 victory over Ipswich. Even more positive however, was the ladies’ ability to maintain composure and claim victory in a number of close encounters. This was best exemplified by the first-round meeting with Wests in which the GPS women were able to repel sustained attacking raids on their own line in the final minutes to secure a tight victory. The team’s increased squad numbers ensured that it was able to continue putting a team on the field when it was faced with player unavailability in the second round. Although a number of results disappointingly did not go the team’s way during this period, the perseverance, commitment and willingness of multiple ladies to play out of position was highly commendable and ultimately representative of the team’s unwavering bond.

A point of significant pride for the GPS women’s team was the increase in squad members achieving representative honours. Stalwart Alisha Hewitt again achieved QLD Super W and Wallaroos selection, in addition to Tessa Vaoga and Elli Mackay who were called up to the QLD squad for the first time. Inspirational team captain Marlugu Dixon again earned selection for the Papua New Guinea Sevens team which competed at the 2019 Pacific Games. Marlugu will also be a part of the Griffith team in the 2019 national AON Sevens competition. A number of other members of the squad also had stand out seasons including halfback Sarah Lewis and loose forwards Ana Nasolo and Diunasi Biau. Finally, the 2019 season was also the last for Vira Kite, a truly irreplaceable member of the GPS women’s team. Not only will Vira’s uncompromising defence and hard ball running be sorely missed, but so too will her leadership, commitment and unfailing ability to continually unite the squad. She is a quintessential club person and deserves a vast amount of accolades and praise as she ‘hangs up the boots’.

The team unfortunately did not achieve its goal of going one step further than 2018 and winning the grand final. The ladies were defeated in the preliminary finals by a determined Brothers outfit. Despite this disappointment, the coaches remain immensely proud of the team’s efforts this season and are confident that the ladies can achieve a premiership in 2020. Mutch and I would like to thank the club for its ongoing support of the women’s program, supporters, family, friends and all members of the 2019 GPS women’s squad.

Colts 1

Coaches: Patrick O’Connor, Tyle Edwards, Zac Russel-Sharam. Manager Scott Grinstead.

The 2019 GPS Colts season started in October 2018 with an information night attended by 46 aspiring players. The night was a terrific success highlighted by speeches by Premiership winning Captain Michael Richards and Reds contracted Tom Kibble.

Off season training commenced the following week with a squad of over 30 players putting in the hard yards at SOF and on the training paddock at Yoku Rd. During this time the players elected a leadership group with Mat Dangerfield voted the 2019 Colts club Captain. Following a break at Christmas the training numbers swelled to over 45 for pre-season settling at 65 players which was enough to field three Colts teams.

The pre-season included trials against Brothers, Sunnybank, Bond and Uni. The lads fought hard throughout with the best result a draw against Uni at Ballymore.

The regular season began with a tough away game against Easts. Our Colts 1 boys competed hard throughout the match but lost a close game. This unfortunately set the tone for the majority of the first round with results not going our way. The boys learnt that in a close competition the difference between winning and losing comes down to the team which minimises mistakes at crucial times.

The second round proved to be very tough for the lads losing a few games at home that were within our reach however the team showed great determination to register away wins against an all-conquering Wests followed by a dominant display against Norths. Unfortunately, this set us up for games against three of the top four teams to finish the season. Despite results not going our way the opposing teams were treated to very physical encounters which drew comments from all of the opposition coaching staff.

In a season where on-field results were not the highlights all Colts players should be congratulated for their efforts on and off the field. In particular the 2019 Colts set a terrific example by being early to training and by turning up in good numbers. Good luck to all players who are moving into the grades and for all second year Colts we look forward to seeing you soon.

Colts Two

Coaches: Vasco Gonvales, Daryl Lindsay. Manager: Steve Taylor.

Colts rugby is about enjoying the game, learning new skills in the transition from junior to senior rugby and the season goal would have been a finals spot in the top 4 of the colts 2 competition.

That didn’t quite work out and we missed the finals spot after a season that turned out a bit tougher than what we had thought after the first few rounds. There were games we won well and games well, we wish we went well. Overall the main impact was maintaining team consistency and when you rotate many players in team starting roles you do suffer in putting consistent team patterns on the field.

That being said, there was some very positive outcomes and where players stepped up and grew immensely as the season progressed, many of the Colts 2 crew had time in Colts 1 which also helps garner experience with the same being said for the Colts 3 guys stepping up to 2’s. After all that’s how it works, many times colts 3 players travelled from a different location to be available to bench colts 2 and though not an ideal situation, this was a necessity to keep the 3 teams on the field. Big call out to the 3’s that backed up, great club spirit.

Main lessons from this year would be consistency and that is hard to achieve with a large rolling pool of players, not being able to name a squad until Thursday evening and not having the guys at training to work with. This was a disappointing factor, especially in the second round and impacted on team preparation significantly. However, there was a good solid core of young men, led by Matt Thomas in the backs and backed up by Lachlan Jones in the forwards. Both were impressive leaders

To the coaches, as always a solid effort and a couple of great guys to work with, Vasco has a passion for the game and a great vision, and Daryl, his knowledge of what forwards are meant to do is fantastic and the way he guides the guys is brilliant.

The season may not have been what we wanted but to those going forth to grades, go and prosper as you will enjoy the comradeship, to those coming back to colts – believe me next year will be better, learn from this season and get stuck into it.

Good season guys.

Coaches: Andy Pope, Liam Wiltshire Managers: Richard Ralph

The Colts 3 team were the most successful part of the 2019 Colts programme winning 7 and drawing 1. As always it was a tough season for the boys with injuries, illness and the tribulations teenagers have to manage. As a support side for the Colts 2 team we found ourselves not having the same starting line-up week in week out but credit to all involved saw us finish on a high.

This team is all about having fun and that they did. New coaches and managers joined to ensure the boys played to their very best and knew exactly what they had to do. Challenging at times as the age of the players were between 16- 19 years of age.

Some standout players throughout the season were Lachlan Muir, for his consistent hard work, Dan Mohan for his overall performance and leadership, Tom Ralph for delivering some mongrel when required and Cooper Benson for his strength, passion and leadership. Cooper also benched for Colts 1 and the 6th grade.

A big thank you to the Colts 3 coaching staff, Andy Pope and Liam (Willy) Wiltshire who mentored and nurtured these boys throughout the season. Unfortunately for all they won’t be back at Jeeps in 2020 as Andy has a newborn and Willy is off to Sydney to work on a newborn.

The 2019 season for the Club’s over 35s team was relatively quiet—as every day passed, we were all a day further away from being 35! Adam Ashley-Cooper is being described as the Wallabies’ Peter Pan, but we’d need a bit more than fairy dust to match his exploits at the World Cup in Japan.

We played a number of Friday night games, a trip or two for out of town games and support of some golden oldies’ carnivals. The season was also spotted with a number of social events, all centred around rugby in one shape or form.

The Rob Chandler Memorial club man of the year award was won by Mark ‘Tosser’ Turner, someone who probably would hold his own in a Wallabies jersey. Congratulations Tosser.

Anyone interested in having a run around, playing the game in the right spirit (reflecting our age) and enjoying the ongoing camaraderie rugby brings no matter what that age, please consider pulling on the boots in season 2020.

Finally, a thank you to our sponsors – The Port Office Hotel and Bank of Queensland The Gap.

49 GPS RUGBY CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2019

Administration Report

Membership Total membership remained reasonably static in 2019 compared with previous years. The table below shows membership movements over the past four years. The decline in supporters is concerning and may require more active promotion in 2020. The increase in Junior Players is largely due to girls touch and the inclusion of “Little Rugby” participants. Junior Rugby player numbers have reduced.

Year Supporters Couples Senior Players Junior Players Total Members 2019 457 179 312 1102 2050 2018 475 203 297 1028 2003 2017 531 161 305 1080 2077 2016 462 137 263 1036 1898

The slight increase in Senior Player numbers in 2019 is largely in the Colts age groups. Restructure of the age group competitions in 2020 may see a further increase.

A breakdown of 2019 Membership is: Life Members 40 Supporters 417 Spouse 179 Open Players 234 (including 32 Women) Colt Players 78 Junior Rugby Players 937 Girls Touch 99 Little Rugby 49 Modified Rugby 18

Due to the restructure of the ARU registration system, it has been a difficult year for matching playing membership. Further work in 2020 will be required to better account for junior parent numbers

50 GPS RUGBY CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2019

Treasurer’s Report

It's with great pleasure to present my treasurer's report for GPS Rugby Union Club Inc.

Finances for 2019 were kick started with a successful weekend in the Australian Club Championship (which we won) and I would like to congratulate our Premier 1st Grade on an outstanding win.

A successful year for 2nd grade winning their Grand Final, well done to these boys.

The financial sector of our Club this year has been challenging, a good roster with our canteen volunteers has made sales setting a high number once again. Anthony Herbert (General Manager) organised rosters and again took control of the stock ordering that has made us a great profit from the canteen.

Merchandise sales have been steady this year and we continue to have the best available price and product in Brisbane Premier Rugby.

Total income for the year will sit around the $1.1m, similar to last year with a profit of around $20k this is inclusive of government grants around $97k. Down on budget though very acceptable. Keep in mind we had an opening stock amount of $87k

Primary source of income for GPS Rugby Club is: • Playing Fees and Membership $238k

• Canteen & Merchandise $469k

• Sponsorship $405k

• Functions & Fundraising $219k

I would like to again thank our sponsors for their financial help, without their generosity our club wouldn't be as successful as it is.

This year again we have been able to continue the upgrade of our facilities within the club, notably the completion of the lighting upgrade to fields 2 and 3 at a cost of about $115k.

In concluding I would like to thank all our staff, sponsors and volunteers for their continued help and support with the club, special mention to Anthony Herbert for his countless hours he spends at this club, also a nice welcome and thanks to Colleen Murphy for getting our accounts inline. Colleen has joined our team as the office and accounts manager.

We definitely had another successful year on and off the field and I look forward to be a part of this successful Rugby Club in 2020.

Independent Auditors Report to the members of the Association

We have audited the accompanying financial report, being a special purpose financial report, of GPS Rugby Club Inc (the association), which comprises the committee’s report, the assets and liabilities statement as at 31 October 2019, the income and expenditure statement for the year then ended, cash flow statement, notes comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information, and the certification by members of the committee on the annual statements giving a true and fair view of the financial position and performance of the association.

Committee’s Responsibility for the Financial Report

The committee of GPS Rugby Club Inc is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report, and has determined that the basis of preparation described in Note 1 is appropriate to meet the requirements of the Associations Corporations Act 1981 and is appropriate to meet the needs of the members. The committee’s responsibility also includes such internal control as the committee determines is necessary to enable the preparation and fair presentation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditor’s Responsibility

Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We have conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Those standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the association’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial report, in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the association’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

Opinion

In our opinion, the financial report presents fairly, in all material respects (or gives a true and fair view –refer to the applicable state/territory Act), the financial position of GPS Rugby Club Inc as at 31 October 2019 and (of) its financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements, and the requirements of the Associations Corporations Act 1981.

Basis of Accounting and Restriction on Distribution

Without modifying our opinion, we draw attention to Note 1 to the financial statements, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared to assist GPS Rugby Club Inc to meet the requirements of the Associations Corporations Act 1981. As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose.

2019 Financial Statements GPS Rugby Club Inc Page 11 of 14 Notes to the Financial Statements GPS Rugby Club Inc For the year ended 31 October 2019

1. Summary of Significant Accounting Policies

The financial statements are special purpose financial statements prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act of Queensland. The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity.

The financial statements have been prepared on an accruals basis and are based on historic costs and do not take into account changing money values or, except where stated specifically, current valuations of non-current assets.

The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless stated otherwise, have been adopted in the preparation of these financial statements.

Property, Plant and Equipment (PPE)

Leasehold improvements and office equipment are carried at cost less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation.

The depreciable amount of all PPE is depreciated over the useful lives of the assets to the association commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.

Leasehold improvements are amortised over the shorter of either the unexpired period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements.

Impairment of Assets

At the end of each reporting period, the committee reviews the carrying amounts of its tangible and intangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaired. If such an indication exists, an impairment test is carried out on the asset by comparing the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset’s fair value less costs to sell and value in use, to the asset’s carrying amount. Any excess of the asset’s carrying amount over its recoverable amount is recognised in the income and expenditure statement.

Employee Provisions

Provision is made for the association’s liability for employee benefits arising from services renderedby employees to the end of the reporting period. Employee provisions have been measured at theamounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled.

Provisions

Provisions are recognised when the association has a legal or constructive obligation, as a result ofpast events, for which it is probable that an outflow of economic benefits will result and that outflowcan be reliably measured. Provisions are measured at the best estimate of the amounts required tosettle the obligation at the end of the reporting period.

Cash on Hand

Cash on hand includes cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less.

Accounts Receivable and Other Debtors

Accounts receivable and other debtors include amounts due from members as well as amounts receivable from donors. Receivables expected to be collected within 12 months of the end of the reporting period are classified as current assets. All other receivables are classified as non-current assets.

These notes should be read in conjunction with the attached compilation report.

2019 Financial Statements GPS Rugby Club Inc Page 12 of 14 Notes to the Financial Statements

Revenue and Other Income

Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account any trade discounts and volume rebates allowed. For this purpose, deferred consideration is not discounted to present values when recognising revenue.

Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest method, which for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the instrument. Dividend revenue is recognised when the right to receive a dividend has been established.

Grant and donation income is recognised when the entity obtains control over the funds, which is generally at the time of receipt.

If conditions are attached to the grant that must be satisfied before the association is eligible to receive the contribution, recognition of the grant as revenue will be deferred until those conditions are satisfied.

All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax.

Leases

Leases of PPE, where substantially all the risks and benefits incidental to the ownership of the asset (but not the legal ownership) are transferred to the association, are classified as finance leases.

Finance leases are capitalised by recording an asset and a liability at the lower of the amounts equal to the fair value of the leased property or the present value of the minimum lease payments, including any guaranteed residual values. Lease payments are allocated between the reduction of the lease liability and the lease interest expense for that period.

Leased assets are depreciated on a straight-line basis over the shorter of their estimated useful lives or the lease term. Lease payments for operating leases, where substantially all the risks and benefits remain with the lessor, are charged as expenses in the periods in which they are incurred.

Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Receivablesand payables are stated inclusive of the amount of GST receivable or payable. The net amount ofGST recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO is included with other receivables or payables in theassets and liabilities statement.

Financial Assets

Investments in financial assets are initially recognised at cost, which includes transaction costs, and are subsequently measured at fair value, which is equivalent to their market bid price at the end of the reporting period. Movements in fair value are recognised through an equity reserve.

Accounts Payable and Other Payables

Accounts payable and other payables represent the liability outstanding at the end of the reporting period for goods and services received by the association during the reporting period that remain unpaid. The balance is recognised as a current liability with the amounts normally paid within 30 days of recognition of the liability.

These notes should be read in conjunction with the attached compilation report.
