Abstract This article endeavors to identify and isolate the scientific and beneficial from falsehood, superstition and mysticism surrounding tantrism. Among the various ancient Indian religious and semi-religious practices, tantra cult has got the most widespread recognition and popularity all over the world. The reason for this popularity of tantra has hardly been from academic, spiritual or philosophical interests. On the contrary, it has been associated with promises of achievements of magical and supernatural powers as well as promises of enhancement of sexual power and intensity of sexual enjoyment, and restoration of lost sexual potency of old people. -

The Rise of Bengali Yoga (Excerpt from Sun, Moon and Earth: The Sacred Relationship of Yoga and Ayurveda) By Mas Vidal To set the stage for a moment, the state of Bengal is an eastern state of India and is one of the most densely populated regions on the planet. It is home to the Ganges river delta at the confluence of the Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers. Rivers have always been a sacred part of yoga and the Indian lifestyle. The capital of Bengal is Kolkata, which was the center of the Indian independence movement. As yoga began to expand at the turn of the century through the 1950s, as a counter-cultural force opposed to British occupation, the region also struggled against a tremendous set-back, the Great Bengal Famine of 1943- 44, which took an estimated two to three million lives. India battled through this and eventually gained independence in 1947. Bengal managed to become a womb for bhakti yogis and the nectar that would sustain the renaissance of yoga in India and across the globe. Bengali seers like Sri Aurobindo promoted yoga as an integral system, a way of life that cultivated a dynamic relationship between mind, body, and soul. Some of the many styles of yoga that provide this pure synthesis remain extant in India, but only through a few living yoga teachers and lineages. This synthesis may even still exist sporadically in commercial yoga. One of the most influential figures of yoga in the West was Paramahansa Yogananda, who formulated a practical means of integrating ancient themes and techniques for the spiritual growth of people in Western societies, and for Eastern cultures to reestablish their balance between spirituality and the material. -

Seriously, unless you’re already powerfully motivated to do (whatever it is), you just won’t care. Thus the secret of starting a regular practice of Paramhansa Yogananda’s energization exercises is to figure out how to like them. As Swami Kriyananda said in Out of the Labyrinth, we should never give up something (e.g., sitting on our arses thinking about doing the rechargers) until we’re ready, with inner knowing, to replace it with something higher. No glamorous movies have been made about them – no Seven Recharging Monks, no Energizer Kid, no Recharger Trilogy, no Energizer Assassin, no Enter the Energizer, no A Touch of Energization, no Crouching Energizer, Hidden Recharger. From the memory banks: I once watched Swami Kriyananda lead the guests at the Expanding Light in the rechargers. Swamiji stood on the front steps, while the guests stood on the ground facing him. “Great,” I thought, I’ll take pictures of Swamiji and show the world how they really should be done. I had a mental image of him swelling up like the Incredible Hulk and rocketing through them like Ironman. Alas, he did them like a regular person, looking rather like an ordinary middle-aged shlump. So much for Samurai Swamiji. But I understood: the rechargers are about working inwardlywith energy – they are pranayam – energy-control exercises. -

In 1784, a ship called "United States" arrived in Pondicherry. Its captain was Elias Hasket Derby of Salem. In the decades that followed Indian goods became available in Salem, Boston and Providence. A handful of Indian servant boys, perhaps the first Asian Indian residents, could be found in these towns, brought home by the sea captains.[1] 1801 First writings on Hinduism In 1801, New England writer Hannah Adams published A View of Religions, with a chapter discussing Hinduism. Joseph Priestly, founder of English Utilitarianism and isolater of oxygen, emigrated to America and published A Comparison of the Institutions of Moses with those of the Hindoos and other Ancient Nations in 1804. 1810-20 Unitarian interest in Hindu reform movements The American Unitarians became interested in Indian thought through the work of Hindu reformer Rammohun Roy (1772-1833) in India. Roy founded the Brahmo Samaj which tried to reform Hinduism by affirming monotheism and rejecting idolotry. The Brahmo Samaj with its universalist ideas became closely allied to the Unitarians in England and America. 1820-40 Emerson's discovery of India Ralph Waldo Emerson discovered Indian thought as an undergraduate at Harvard, in part through the Unitarian connection with Rammohun Roy. He wrote his poem "Indian Superstition" for the Harvard College Exhibition of April 24, 1821. In the 1830's, Emerson had copies of the Rig-Veda, the Upanishads, the Laws of Manu, the Bhagavata Purana, and his favorite Indian text the Bhagavad-Gita. -

Asana ist die dritte Stufe des Raja Yoga (bzw. Ashtanga Yoga oder Kriya Yoga) nach Patanjali. Die anderen sieben Stufen des Raja Yoga sind Yama, Niyama, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana und Samadhi. Wichtig bei der Ausübung ist das bewusste Hineingehen, der richtige Atem, bewusstes Halten und das bewusste Auflösen des Asana. Yoga-Asanas sollen bei ihrer Ausführung immer zwei Qualitäten enthalten: Stabilität und Wohlbefinden (sthira-sukham asanam. Yogasutre 2.46). Es ist sinnvoll, speziell zur Kräftigung der Muskulatur gedachte Asanas bzw. welche, die schwierigere vorbereiten, dynamisch im Atemrhythmus auszuführen. Asanas dienen nicht nur körperlicher Geschmeidigkeit und vitaler Kraft, sondern auch einer guten Körperbeherrschung. Sie harmonisieren Körper und Geist. Yoga und die Asanas beruhen auf körperlichen Erfahrungen, bei denen es mehr auf die praktische Durchführung ankommt als auf das theoretische Wissen über die unterschiedlichen Wirkungen. Eine der angestrebten Wirkungen ist es, den Gedankenfluss zur Ruhe zu bringen. Das gelingt besser, wenn während des Übens nur das Nötigste gesprochen wird und ein passives „Geschehenlassen“ zugelassen wird – das Gegenteil zu Gymnastikübungen, die auch gesundheitsfördernd, meistens aber leistungsorientiert sind. Im Yoga geht es grundsätzlich nicht um Leistung, Erreichenwollen und Erfolge - Yoga ist kein Wettbewerb. Die perfekte Stellung einzunehmen ist weniger wichtig als durch sie eine spirituelle Qualität zu erleben, also beispielsweise zu spüren, dass man so in Ordnung ist und statt belastender Gedanken seine Mitte findet. -
