Utilizing the Media to Facilitate Social Change A Toolkit for Working with the Media WEST VIRGINIA FOUNDATION for RAPE INFORMATION and SERVICES www.fris.org 2011 Media Toolkit | 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Media Advocacy……………………………….. ……….. 3 Building a Relationship with the Media……... ……….. 3 West Virginia Media…………………………………….. 4 Tips for Working with the Media……………... ……….. 10 Letter to the Editor…………………………….. ……….. 13 Opinion Editorial (Op-Ed)…………………….. ……….. 15 Media Advisory………………………………… ……….. 17 Press/News Release………………………….. ……….. 19 Public Service Announcements……………………….. 21 Media Interviews………………………………. ……….. 22 Survivors’ Stories and the Media………………………. 23 Media Packets…………………………………. ……….. 25 Media Toolkit | 3 Media Advocacy Media advocacy can promote social change by influencing decision-makers and swaying public opinion. Organizations can use mass media outlets to change social conditions and encourage political and social intervention. When working with the media, advocates should ‘shape’ their story to incorporate social themes rather than solely focusing on individual accountability. “Develop a story that personalizes the injustice and then provide a clear picture of who is benefiting from the condition.” (Wallack et al., 1999) Merely stating that there is a problem provides no ‘call to action’ for the public. Therefore, advocates should identify a specific solution that would allow communities to take control of the issue. Sexual violence is a public health concern of social injustices. Effective Media Campaigns Local, regional or statewide campaigns can provide a forum for prevention, outreach and raising awareness to create social change. This toolkit will enhance advocates’ abilities to utilize the media for campaigns and other events. Campaigns can include: public service announcements (PSAs), awareness events (Take Back the Night; The Clothesline Project), media interviews, coordinated events at area schools or college campuses, position papers, etc.

ALUMNI MAGAZINE • WINTER 2020 << HOPE IN CRISIS 2020 ALUMNI MEDALLION THE GREATEST SHOWMEN “ William & Mary has given me so much, I want to pass it down the line. It’s important for the future of the university.” — Betsy Calvo Anderson ’70, HON J.D. ’15, P ’00 YOUR LEGACY FOR ALL TIME COMING. “ Why do I give? I feel lucky to have a unique perspective on William & Mary. As a Muscarelle Museum of Art Foundation board member, an emeritus member of the William & Mary Law School Foundation board and a past president of the Alumni Association, I’ve seen first-hand the resources and commitment it takes to keep William & Mary on the leading edge of higher education — and how diligently the university puts our contributions to work. My late husband, Alvin ’70, J.D. ’72, would be happy to know that in addition to continuing our more than 40-year legacy of annual giving, I’ve included our alma mater in my estate plans. Although I never could have imagined when I arrived on campus at age 18 what an enormous impact William & Mary would have on my life, I also couldn’t have imagined the opportunity I would have to positively influence the lives of others.” WILLIAM & MARY For assistance with your charitable gift plans, contact OFFICE OF GIFT PLANNING Kirsten A. • Turning Contacts Into Converts
JUNE 2018 LITERATURE EVANGELISM: TURNING CONTACTS INTO CONVERTS FLORIDA HOSPITAL GREENEVILLE EXPANDS PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS BRING MAKING PATIENTS WHOLE WAFFLE HOUSE HERO PATIENTS WITH AUTISM LOVE TO MOLDOVA AND SPECIAL NEEDS vantagepoint It’s All About People For 2,000 years, men and women who have accepted Jesus as their Savior have been commissioned to go and preach the Gospel. The Christian movement has struggled over the millennia, sometimes do- ing very well and with marvelous breakthroughs. Other times, not as well. Over the past few decades, evangelism has at times been mischaracterized as religious salesmanship, accompanied by goals and pressure to produce. But, this is an unfortunate representation. Preaching the Gospel to lost people is the consummate work of people who have accepted the Gospel summons and love Jesus. It is the most wonderful privilege given to His children — lead- ing someone to a life-changing, transformational decision. In what way may anyone invest his or her life to find a deeper sense of meaning and privilege? Mike Cauley, D.Min. Former President of the Having had the blessing to serve the Church vocationally for 40 years, I Florida Conference am glad that I accepted God’s providential call to serve God and His Church. Guest Editorial I don’t know how many more years I will serve vocationally, but, obviously, I have fewer years ahead of me than I had in 1978, when I began as a pastor of a three-church district. But, even after formal ministry is over, I will be about evangelism, because evangelism is about loving Jesus, loving His Church (which He regards as His own body), and loving people.
