Burgess Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto 2011 Abstract In this thesis I address the following questions: (1) How do dykes take up space in public in contemporary cities? (2) How does the ‘marching dyke’ emerge as a subject and what kind of subject is it? (3) How, in turn, do marching dykes affect space? In order to examine these questions I focus on the Toronto Dyke March to ask how it emerged in this particular time and place. The answer to each of these questions is paradoxical. I argue that the Dyke March is a complex, complicated and contradictory site of politics, protest and identity. Investigating ‘marching dykes’ reveals how the subject of the Dyke March is imagined in multiple and conflicting ways. The Toronto Dyke March is an event which brings together thousands of queer women annually who march together in the streets of Toronto on the Saturday afternoon of Pride weekend. My research examines how the March emerged out of a history of activism and organizing and considers how the March has been made meaningful for queer women’s communities, identities, histories and spaces. My analysis draws together queer and feminist ii poststructuralism, cultural geography literature on sexuality and space, and the history of sexuality in Canada. I combine a Foucaultian genealogy with visual ethnography, interviews and archival research. I argue that the Dyke March is an event which is intentionally meaningful in its claims to particular spaces and subjectivities. This research draws connections across various bodies of scholarship and offers an interdisciplinary contribution to the literature, contributing to discussions of queer women’s visibility and representation. Although my analysis is focused on Toronto as a particular site, it offers insight into broader queer women’s activist organizing efforts and queer activism in Canada. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am incredibly grateful for the support and contributions made by many of the people in my life who have made this work possible.     Gay Pride on Stolen Land: Homonationalism, Queer Asylum and Indigenous Sovereignty at the Vancouver Winter Olympics Paper submitted for publication in GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies August 2012 Abstract In this paper we examine intersections between homonationalism, sport, gay imperialism and white settler colonialism. The 2010 Winter Olympics, held in Vancouver, Canada, produced new articulations between sporting homonationalism, indigenous peoples and immigration policy. For the first time at an Olympic/Paralympic Games, three Pride Houses showcased LGBT athletes and provided support services for LBGT athletes and spectators. Supporting claims for asylum by queers featured prominently in these support services. However, the Olympic events were held on unceded territories of four First Nations, centered in Vancouver which is a settler colonial city. Thus, we examine how this new form of ‘sporting homonationalism’ emerged upon unceded, or stolen, indigenous land of British Columbia in Canada. Specifically, we argue that this new sporting homonationalism was founded upon white settler colonialism and imperialism—two distinct logics of white supremacy (Smith, 2006).1 Smith explained how white supremacy often functions through contradictory, yet interrelated, logics. We argue that distinct logics of white settler colonialism and imperialism shaped the emergence of the Olympic Pride Houses. On the one hand, the Pride Houses showed no solidarity with the major indigenous protest ‘No Olympics On Stolen Land.’ This absence of solidarity between the Pride Houses and the ‘No Olympics On Stolen Land’ protests reveals how thoroughly winter sports – whether elite or gay events — depend on the logics, and material practices, of white settler colonialism. We analyze how 2 the Pride Houses relied on colonial narratives about ’Aboriginal Participation’ in the Olympics and settler notions of ‘land ownership’.

    Safety Audit Report Card Date: October 15, 2008, 6:30 to 8:00 pm Area Audited: Church Street (Charles Street East-Wood Street; Gay Village) Ward 27, Toronto Centre-Rosedale Neighbourhood 75, Church-Yonge Corridor The Community Safety Audit was organized by the Anti-Violence Program at the 519 Church Street Community Centre. Seven people ages 25 to 60+, participated in the safety audit walkabout and completed the surveys; the participants represented community agency staff and members of the neighbourhood. The audit was led by Howard Shulman, the coordinator of the Anti-Violence Program at the 519 Community Centre. The group conducted a safety audit of their neighbourhood because volunteers at the 519 have done audits in the past and found them to be very effective tools for addressing community safety. Additionally, the Anti-Violence Program had not conducted an audit in many years. Howard had attended a METRAC training session in the spring of 2008, and there was a lot of interest from volunteers. The Church-Yonge Corridor is a very unique neighbourhood in downtown Toronto. Since the 1950’s, it has been known as Toronto’s ‘Gay Village’ because of the concentration of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer) social spaces, services, and businesses. It is celebrated as a politically active & strong community, which has provided a safe space for LGBTQ cultures and people to thrive. The neighbourhood is predominantly single people in their 20’s and 30’s, the majority of whom live alone. It is not as culturally or racially diverse as many other neighbourhoods in Toronto, with only 34.6%1 of people in the area identifying as visible minorities.

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com A butch-femme couple The concept of butch and femme identities have long been hotly debated within the participating in a group lesbian community, yet even achieving a consensus as to exactly what the terms wedding ceremony in "butch" and "femme" mean can be extraordinarily difficult. In recent years, these Taiwan. words have come to describe a wide spectrum of individuals and their relationships. It is easiest, then, to begin with an examination of butch-femme culture and meaning from a historical perspective. Butch and femme emerged in the early twentieth century as a set of sexual and emotional identities among lesbians. To give a general but oversimplified idea of what butch-femme entails, one might say that butches exhibit traditionally "masculine" traits while femmes embody "feminine" ones. Although oral histories have demonstrated that butch-femme couples were seen in America as far back as the turn of the twentieth century, and that they were particularly conspicuous in the 1930s, it is the mid-century working-class and bar culture that most clearly illustrate the archetypal butch-femme dynamic. Arguably, during the period of the 1940s through the early 1960s, butches and femmes were easiest to recognize and characterize: butches with their men's clothing, DA haircuts, and suave manners often found their more traditionally styled femme counterparts, wearing dresses, high heels, and makeup, in the gay bars. A highly visible and accepted way of living within the lesbian community, butch-femme was in fact considered the norm among lesbians during the 1950s.

Believe me, I’d rather face that question than have that ugly, accusing glare from some small-minded person who is allowing themselves to believe that I “allowed my child to choose to be gay.” How can a person best describe the cross between trying to be a responsible and well-behaved adult, and wanting to choke the very last breath out of some ignoramus who stands within earshot saying despicable and hateful things about the child who you love more than your own life? By now, many people have either read or heard about the poem by Emily Perl Kingsley entitled, “Welcome to Holland.” The poem depicts the way a mother feels upon learning that her newborn child is disabled, after preparing herself for a “typical” child during her pregnancy. I believe that all mothers have certain expectations during pregnancy, and then we solidify certain expectations upon learning the sex of the baby. I suppose that could be my segue into what it’s like to have a daughter who is lesbian, yes? You hear the doctor pronounce to all in the room, “It’s a girl!” and you begin imagining her school dances and formals, and even a brief thought of her wedding, though it’s way down the road. You have certain expectations just because the child is born with a particular set of genitalia. It’s unfortunate that it all begins that way, but I know that it’s common, no matter how erroneous.
