Call for shock tactics on AIDS cases

NAMIBIA needs to urgently redress the deteriorating situ ation regarding the spread of AIDS. Perhaps one of the best ways in which to do this·is to use shock tactics along with the proposed educational campaigns which could be a case of 'too little, too late'. Health workers in one region have indicated that up to three· quarters of all hospital patients were tested mv-positiv e and they went as far as to estimate that it could affect anything from 40 to 50 per cent of the general population in this area. These are shocking statistics, and if true, would serve some purpose if publicly revealed to all NamIbians. This shows that the area in question, as well as the country as a whole, are facing a potential disaster situation. It is impera tive that the Government, and in particular the Ministry of Health, become more active in the anti-AIDS campaign if we are to avert this crisis. Attempts to redress the situation, including the proposal to educate Standard 7 and 8 pupils, in AIDS awareness, will do little to alleyiate the situation. AIDS education needs to start at a much earlier stage in schoois, and as far as adult BACK to basics: this teachers tries out her lesson on an unusual 'primary class'. education is concerned, there is a dire need for counselUng. Hthe question of AIDS is neglected, if we try to hide the real figures of both AIDS and mv-positive people in Namibia, then the social costs will be exhorbitant. Hwe neglect AIDS victims, then their numbers could escalate dramatically, and if the state cares for them properly, it could Teachers try harder to constitute such a drain on our resources that we would have to forget about development projects in generaL The public needs to be made aware of the true statistics of both the number of AIDS cases in Namibia, as well as those who have tested IilV-positive.
