It took place at the beautiful Mingei Museum of Art where alums Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman, ’51, were closing a nearly year-long, landmark show of their collective work, titled Masters of Mid-Century California Modernism: Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman. The exhibition, the first comprehensive retrospective of their body of work, offered an overview of the Ackermans’ 50- year collaborative partnership, focusing on their outstanding work in decorative art and design and highlighting their central role as designer-craftspeople who helped shape the California Mid- Century Modern style. Monks, 1994, Jerome Ackerman, The Los Angeles-based couple, now stoneware with matte and semi-matte in their eighties, established their first glazes, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. diam., held in company, Jenev Design Studio, in L.A. the Smithsonian American Art Museum. in 1953. In 1956 Jenev Design Studio became ERA Industries, Inc. The years 1950 to 1975 saw L.A. become a major center of modernist design, particularly in home furnishings.     MACAA Conference Summary Collecting, Documenting, and Sharing Detroit Arts Culture: In and Around Wayne State, 1960s-1980s In the 1960s, as explosive social and political movements gave rise to the rejection of post-World War II middle-class society, Wayne State University and its nearby environs emerged as a cultural force. A loosely drawn community of artists, poets, musicians and politicos became active participants in this boldly expressive movement, with much activity centered in the Cass Corridor, adjacent to campus. While this mirrored what was going on in other parts of the country, Detroiters had their own source material, inspiration, and tools for expression. For the MACAA Conference, six panelists presented a number of projects undertaken to preserve the heritage of this important time in Detroit's cultural history, as well as efforts to document current trends. Sandra Schemske, University Art Collection Coordinator, Wayne State University In order to provide background on the art scene around Wayne State during this time period, Sandra presented a documentary video she produced for the University Art Collection, which was made in conjunction with an exhibition at Elaine Jacob Gallery on Wayne State’s campus. The exhibition and video—'Time and Place: Art of Detroit's Cass Corridor from the Wayne State University Art Collection'— featured the work of a number of Cass Corridor artists whose work is displayed in and outside of campus buildings and offices. The video provided a tour of that exhibition, and served to familiarize MACAA Conference attendees with the artists and their work, as well as serving as a testament to the continuing value the art and artists have to the university and community.

Gilmore, were influenced by the work of their contemporary, Horace William Shaler (H. W. S.) Cleveland, and the picturesque landscape designs that are a hallmark of the era. Upon the framework of these plats, the residents shaped Prospect Park’s character and appearance. The neighborhood is significant as the home of the first community association in the city of Minneapolis, the Prospect Park Improvement Association (PPIA). The PPIA quickly established itself as a major influence, effecting changes ranging from the removal of weeds to the construction of the neighborhood’s iconic water tower. The community’s culture was enriched by its proximity to the University of Minnesota, which drew many academics to Prospect Park. The Prospect Park Historic District is one of three suburban-type developments that were established in Minneapolis in the late nineteenth century. While the architectural design in the other two, Kenwood and Washburn Park, is relatively homogeneous, following the pattern of many of the city’s neighborhoods, the houses in Prospect Park display a spectrum of the residential styles that appeared in Minneapolis during the late nineteenth century and the twentieth century.
