“La Musica È Per Tutti” Arsizio, Vigevano, Padova, Treviso, Trieste, Venezia, Bologna, Parma, Pisa, Siena, Roma, Napoli, Sorrento, Alghero LA ROSA ROSENKAVALIER KLEIBER Una Rosa per ricordare Erich e Carlos Kleiber. Il fiore che rappresenta bellezza e insieme spiritualità per rendere omaggio ai due grandi Maestri. L’idea è nata in occasione di alcuni importanti anniversari legati a Erich e Carlos Kleiber che gli appassionati estimatori dei due Direttori Gruppo Rosenkavalier Kleiber volevano celebrare. Sia Erich che Carlos sono stati straordinari interpreti del “Rosenkavalier” di R. Strauss, nel quale Carlos è stato insuperabile, Carlos in particolare aveva sempre una rosa sul leggio, da qui lo spunto per una rosa che portasse il loro nome. Fondamentale la collaborazione 6 ottobre 2018 ore 17.00 con un giovane vivaista, Davide Dalla Libera, appassionato pure lui di Busto Arsizio, Villa Ottolini-Tosi musica, che ha accolto con entusiasmo la proposta e ha creato la ROSA ROSENKAVALIER KLEIBER presentata l’11 maggio 2016 a Milano, a via Bellini 7 Casa Verdi, dove viveva Veronica Kleiber, sorella di Carlos. Con la ROSA quel giorno sono stati ricordati alcuni importanti anniversari: n co n t r o d e d I c ato a r I c h l e I b e r i quarant’anni dell’esordio al Teatro alla Scala di Milano di Carlos Kleiber I e K proprio con “Der Rosenkavalier” (aprile – maggio 1976), i quarant’anni del trionfale “Otello” di Carlos Kleiber alla Scala (7 dicembre 1976), i sessant’anni della morte di Erich Kleiber, avvenuta il 27 gennaio 1956, il 27 gennaio, lo stesso giorno di Giuseppe Verdi. Quanto all’11 maggio, questa data è stata scelta perché l’11 maggio 1946 riapriva, dopo la fine della seconda guerra mondiale, con un grande concerto di Arturo Toscanini, che fu amico della famiglia Kleiber, il teatro alla Scala che Le Leggi razziali del 1938 in Italia, per un decennio ha visto i trionfi di Carlos Kleiber. l’opposizione di Erich Kleiber La Rosa Rosenkavalier Kleiber dall’11 maggio 2016 ha cominciato il suo viaggio attraverso l’Europa portando il suo messaggio di bellezza e il “Fidelio” non diretto alla Scala e di pace che unisce i Paesi. Fino ad oggi è stata messa a dimora in giardini a Londra, Parigi, Vienna, Berlino, Monaco di Baviera, Stoccarda, Praga, Konjsica, in Italia a Milano, Como, Genova, Cremona, Lodi, Busto “La Musica è per tutti” Arsizio, Vigevano, Padova, Treviso, Trieste, Venezia, Bologna, Parma, Pisa, Siena, Roma, Napoli, Sorrento, Alghero. Da anni Kleiber, allora una dei più grandi direttori al mondo, aveva lasciato la Germania di Hitler, in aperta opposizione (Vienna 1890 – Zurigo 1956) “Laal nazismo. Nel Musicadicembre 1938 è informato deiè provvedimenti per tutti”attuati in Italia con la Erich Kleiber nasce a Vienna il 5 agosto 1890, l’unica sorella, Elisabeth, era nata promulgazione delle Leggi razziali fasciste, la Scala con zelo particolare ha licenziato l’anno prima. Questo il testo: come direttore a Praga, nel 1923 il debutto a Berlino, con la direzione del “Fidelio”. Diventa in pochi anni uno dei direttori più acclamati, è attivo in numerosi teatri “Apprendo in questo momento che il Teatro alla Scala ha chiuso le sue porte ai vostri d’opera in Germania, dirige le orchestre più importanti. Nel 1925 dirige in prima compatrioti israeliti. La musica è fatta per tutti, come il sole e l’aria. Con l’avvento del nazismo dirigere in questo magnifico Teatro che rammenta le più nobili tradizioni italiane. arriva la rottura di Kleiber con la Germania di Hitler: il nazismo vieta le opere di Erich Kleiber” Berg, Kleiber, a difesa di tutta l’arte, prenderà una decisa posizione lasciando Nessuno dei più insigni esponenti italiani della musica, della cultura, dell’arte l’incarico di Berlino e la Germania. Si trasferisce in Argentina, dirige per oltre sostenne la protesta di Erich Kleiber. Il grande Maestro austriaco a marzo del 1939 un decennio al Teatro Colon, a Buenos Aires, quindi dopo la fine della seconda non fu sul podio a dirigere “Fidelio” alla Scala. Ma è proprio la sua direzione mancata guerra mondiale torna in Europa. che merita un ricordo particolare nel segno di ciò che “Fidelio” rappresenta con la sua tensione morale e la sua aspirazione alla libertà. L’opposizione del Maestro Sono anni di attività intensa, ma anche di amarezze: Kleiber non avrà più un Kleiber ai provvedimenti antiebraici che calpestavano la dignità umana resta una incarico di direttore stabile. Viaggia, sempre accanto la moglie Ruth, dirige pagina luminosa negli anni bui di nazismo e fascismo, anni segnati tragicamente da concerti, riprende la carriera internazionale. Muore il 27 gennaio 1956 a Zurigo. svastiche e fasci littori ai quali troppi esponenti del mondo della cultura si mostrarono Il 20 gennaio a Colonia aveva tenuto il suo ultimo concerto, dirigendo la Sinfonia per convinzione e per opportunismo ossequienti. Non Erich Kleiber: il suo “Fidelio” n. 1 di Weber. non eseguito alla Scala è un grande monumento morale alla libertà dell’uomo, alla dignità della persona che non si fa calpestare dalla tirannia. Quest’anno a ottant’anni dalle Leggi razziali il Teatro alla Scala ha reso omaggio a Erich Kleiber ricordando il suo gesto e dedicandogli nel mese di giugno la prima del “Fidelio” diretto da Wung Chung. “Il gesto di Erich Kleiber è stato un gesto eroico, in un tempo in cui tutti stavano dall’altra parte, Kleiber ebbe la forza di non obbedire alla maggioranza e scelse di essere l’altro” : Liliana Segre, sopravvissuta al lager di Auschwitz, Senatrice a vita, alla presentazione del “Fidelio”, nel ricordo di Erich Kleiber e Vittore Veneziani..

    Der Auftakt 1920-1938 The Prague music journal Der Auftakt [The upbeat. AUF. Subtitle: “Musikblätter für die tschechoslowakische Republik;” from volume seven, issue two “Moderne Musikblätter”]1 appeared from December 1920 to April 1938.2 According to Felix Adler (1876-1928), music critic for the Prague journal Bohemia and editor of the first eight issues of AUF,3 the journal was formed out of the Musiklehrerzeitung [Journal for music teachers] (1913-16, organ of the Deutscher Musikpädagogischer Verband [German association for music pedagogy] in Prague) and was to be a general music journal with a modern outlook and with a concern for the interests of music pedagogues.4 Under its next editor, Erich Steinhard, AUF soon developed into one of the leading German-language modern music journals of the time and became the center of Czech-German musical collaboration in the Czechoslovakian Republic between the wars.5 Adolf Weißmann, eminent music critic from Berlin, writes: “Among the journals that avoid all distortions of perspective, the Auftakt stands at the front. It has gained international importance through the weight of its varied contributions and the clarity of mind of its main editor.”6 The journal stopped publication without prior announcement in the middle of volume eighteen, likely a result of the growing influence of Nazi Germany.7 AUF was published at first by Johann Hoffmanns Witwe, Prague, then, starting with the third volume in 1923, by the Auftaktverlag, a direct venture of the Musikpädagogischer Verband.8 The journal was introduced as a bimonthly publication, but except for the first volume appearing in twenty issues from December 1920 to the end of 1921, all volumes contain twelve monthly issues, many of them combined into double issues.9 The issues are undated, but a line with the date for the “Redaktionsschluss” [copy deadline], separating the edited content from the 1 Subtitles as given on the first paginated page of every issue.

Signed: Carolyn Watson Date: ii Abstract This thesis focuses on the art of orchestral conducting and in particular, the gestural language used by conductors. Aspects such as body posture and movement, eye contact, facial expressions and manual conducting gestures will be considered. These nonverbal forms of expression are the means a conductor uses to communicate with players. Manual conducting gestures are used to show fundamental technical information relating to tempo, dynamics and cues, as well as demonstrating to a degree, musical expression and conveying an interpretation of the musical work. Body posture can communicate authority, leadership, confidence and inspiration. Furthermore, physical gestures such as facial expressions can express a conductor’s mood and demeanour, as well as the emotional content of the music. Orchestral conducting is thus a complex and multifarious art, at the core of which is gesture. These physical facets of conducting will be examined by way of a case study. The conductor chosen as the centrepiece of this study is Austrian conductor, Carlos Kleiber (1930-2004). Hailed by many as the greatest conductor of all time1, Kleiber was a perfectionist with unscrupulously high standards who enjoyed a career with some of the world’s finest orchestras and opera companies including the Vienna Philharmonic, La Scala, Covent Garden, the Met and the Chicago Symphony.

    RICHARD STRAUSS: The Origin, Dissemination and Reception of his Mozart Renaissance Raymond lIolden I I \,--,~/ PhD Goldsmiths' College University of London 1 Abstract Richard Strauss holds an important place in the history of performance. Of the major musical figures active during the second half of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth centuries, his endeavours as a Mozartian are of particular importance. Strauss' special interest in the works of Mozart was seminal to both his performance and compositional aesthetics. As a result of this affinity, Strauss consciously set out to initiate a Mozart renaissance that embodied a precise set of principles and reforms. It was these principles and reforms, described as literalist, rather than those of artists such .as Gustav Mahler, who edited Mozart's works both musically and dramatically, that found further expression in the readings of, amongst others, Otto Klemperer, George Szell, Sir John Pritchard and Wolfgang Sawallisch. It is the aim of this dissertation to investigate Strauss' activities as a Mozartian and to assess his influence on subsequent generations of Mozart conductors. Accordingly, the dissertation is divided into an Introduction, five chapters, a Conclusion and thirteen appendices. These consider both the nature and ramifications of Strauss' reforms and performance aesthetic. BELLINI’S NORMA featuring CECILIA BARTOLI This tragic opera is set in Roman-occupied, first-century Gaul, features a title character, who although a Druid priestess, is in many ways a modern woman. Norma has secretly taken the Roman proconsul Pollione as her lover and had two children with him. Political and personal crises arise when the locals turn against the occupiers and Pollione turns to a new paramour. Norma “is a role with emotions ranging from haughty and demanding, to desperately passionate, to vengeful and defiant. And the singer must convey all of this while confronting some of the most vocally challenging music ever composed. And if that weren't intimidating enough for any singer, Norma and its composer have become almost synonymous with the specific and notoriously torturous style of opera known as bel canto — literally, ‘beautiful singing’” (“Love Among the Druids: Bellini's Norma,” NPR World of Opera, May 16, 2008). And Bartoli, one of the greatest living opera divas, is up to the challenges the role brings. (New York Public Radio’s WQXR’s “OperaVore” declared that “Bartoli is Fierce and Mercurial in Bellini's Norma,” Marion Lignana Rosenberg, June 09, 2013.) If you’re already a fan of this opera, you’ve no doubt heard a recording spotlighting the great soprano Maria Callas (and we have such a recording, too), but as the notes with the Bartoli recording point out, “The role of Norma was written for Giuditta Pasta, who sang what today’s listeners would consider to be mezzo-soprano roles,” making Bartoli more appropriate than Callas as Norma.

    HEYWORTH'S KLEMPERER OTTO KLEMPERER: His Life and Times, Volume .!_, 1885-1933 by Peter Heyworth. 492 pp. including biographical glossary, Discography: Commer­ cial Recordings by Otto Klemperer (part 1) by Michael M. Gray, biblio­ graphy, and Index by Frederick Smyth. Cambridge University Press. Klemperer gave this writer some of the most vivid concert-hall experiences of his youth during the great man's regular visits to London in the 1950's. Vivid, but, even at that early and impressionable age, by no means always satisfying. Wonderful clarity and steadiness of pulse, majestic force in many a great climax was there; but why, I thought, such intransigent sleep-walking through the Mozart great G minor's finale? Or rather, as I asked my musical mentor, are you sure it should really go like that? Fascinating to hear the Ninth's Scherzo in slow motion with the eccentrically prominent horn part, but why the critical rapture? Thunderous depth of tone in the first-movement cli­ maxes, but why the plodding, po-faced rhythms elsewhere in it and in many another movement of the cycle? Doubts from the very first, then, which by the mid-sixties had hardened into aversion and abstention from attendance at the concerts of the (by then) New Philharmonia Orchestra. Such doubts never entered Peter Heyworth's mind. Klemperer was for him the all-conquering hero who put everyone else--without exception--in the shade. Reservations such as mine were met with the assurance, in "The Observer" of 17 November 1957, that "complaints that Klemperer's performances are pedestrian suggest a desire for benzedrine rather than music." It would not be true to say that Klemperer emerges without criticism from Volume 1 of this monumental biography.

Gowthorpe Opera Collection The Montague F. Gowthorpe Opera Collection was created a period of years by Montague F. Gowthorpe chairman of the Detroit Symphony and one of the original vice-presidents at Paramount Pictures. Gowthorpe was born in Kings Lyn, England in 1898 and was a lifetime devotee of opera which he regarded as the highest form of art and entertainment. After his death in 1980 this collection was passed to his niece, Bonnie Lamar, MD of Tennessee. She donated it to Special Collections in 1998. The collection consists of 200 reel-to-reel tapes recorded by Mr. Gowthorpe from radio. The tapes were recorded at 3 ¾ and 7 ½ speeds from the years of 1959 to 1968 though the bulk of the recordings were made in the early 1960’s. The last box of the collection contains 48 libretto books collected and annotated by Mr. Gowthorpe to accompany the recordings he made.
