2010 Asamoah Gyan became the first player to miss two penalties in the World Cup. He failed to convert from the spot against Czech Republic in 2006 and Uruguay in 2010.

1950 England were eliminated 2-0 by Spain at the group stage of their maiden FIFA World Cup campaign. Earlier in the competition, England had suffered a shock 1-0 defeat by USA, which to this date remains one of the biggest upsets in the 80-year history of the competition.

For the first time in the competition's history, all eight group winners have qualified for the quarter-finals.

Five of the Round of 16 matches could not be decided in regular time for the first time since 1938.

Argentina have played extra time in seven World Cup matches and are yet to concede a goal. By contrast, Switzerland have never scored on the three occasions in which they have gone beyond regular time.

Belgium extended their record winning streak in the FIFA World CupTM to four straight victories, all by single-goal margins. The Belgians’ next opponents also have four narrow wins under their belts, although their longest winning sequence of five was established at the 1986 edition.

USA’s Julian Green became the seventh youngest scorer in the World Cup, aged 19 years and 25 days.

A tournament-record 29 goals have been scored by substitutes at the 2014 World CupTM, a number that could yet increase before the campaign finishes.
