GLSW Scouts Explorer Belt Expedition “välkommen” Newsletter Number 1: May 2013 Engage, ask and discover!

Our next Explorer Belt Expedition will be to Sweden, August 2014. This is one of the most esteemed Awards you can gain as an Explorer or Network member. This information is to help you to think about taking part in a fantastic experience… and planning well in advance!

What is the Explorer Belt? Something to be extremely proud about! A 10 day expedition in teams of 3 to 6 people aged 16 to 25. You will walk approximately 100 miles moving through small towns and villages; talking to a wide variety of people; taking part in local events and really getting under the The Explorer Belt skin of Swedish life. Each day you will need to plan, write up your projects, work as a team, More than photographing do your own shopping, and find your next place to stay, all within a budget given to you. buildings and eating Swedish meat balls! Your expedition will be assessed to ensure it meets the standards of those that have gained this Award previously.

As a GLSW County run event, the projects are set for you to ensure you are within an area where we can respond to problems. The total trip lasts 14 days to allow for rest time at the end.

IMPORTANT INFO Cost and deposits Training Weekend ( Compulsory) Fri/Sun, 8th to 10th Nov 2013 We estimate the cost at £600. This will include flights from London, base camp & Location: Within GLSW food at the start and end, your allowance for the 10 day expedition and travel Cost: £15 insurance. Final costs will be known before the Training Weekend. Anticipated Expedition Dates: 14 days at end of August 2014 A deposit of £250 is required by 25th January 2014. Some questions people often ask:

Is the Training Weekend compulsory? Yes. This is very important. Apart from information we need to give you, and allow you to ask questions, you will get a real insight as to how your projects should be done so that you gain to maximum from the expedition and be prepared for the assessment. Additionally we advise that you hold a training weekend with your team. We can help you with that plan.

What if I don’t have a team? Our training weekend might be an opportunity for you to get to know other people in a similar position and form a team. We will not put people into teams or work on getting teams together. This has been tried in the past and is very difficult and time consuming.

My team is part of outside GLSW, can we attend? We will be pleased to receive participants from all parts of the United Kingdom, and have done so in the past.. Please note that the Training Weekend is compulsory.

Organised by Greater London South West (GLSW) Scouts. The core team of four leaders ran the GLSW Explorer Belt Expeditions to Lithuania, and . Over 60 people gained their Award through one of these events. The team is led by the County Commissioner and they will be in Sweden throughout your Expedition.
