HEAD COACH: Dave Bike (Sacred Heart, 1969), 32nd Season at Sacred Heart ASST. COACH: Anthony Latina (Brandeis, 1995) ASST. COACH: Johnny Kidd (CCSU, 1985) ASST. COACH: Drew Shubik (Sacred Heart, 2008) ST. JOHN’S HOLDS OFF WAGNER 69-61, DESPITE MURRAY’S GAME-HIGH 21 POINTS Jamaica, NY – Junior Tyler Murray scored 14 of his game-high 21 points in the second half but it was not enough as St. John’s held off a feisty Wagner squad by a 69-61 count at Carnesecca Arena. The Seahawks, who rallied from 16 down to cut it to four on two occasions, fall to 3-3 while the Red Storm improve to 5-1 despite being held to 36.1 percent shooting from the floor. Wagner whittled a 16-point deficit down to four on three separate occasions in the second half but could not get any closer as St. John’s escaped with its fifth-straight win thanks to 21 points off 21 Seahawk turnovers. The Red Storm also went to the line 36 times, compared to just 17 for the Green & White. Murray scored his career-best matching 21 points, on 7-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-6 from long range, and a perfect 4-of-4 from the line while adding five rebounds and three assists over 37 minutes. Sophomore Josh Thompson notched a season-best 12 points, on 6-of-12 shooting, with five rebounds. Rounding out the double-figure scorers for the Green & White was freshman Latif Rivers, who had 11 points. Down 10 at the half, Wagner saw the deficit increase to 16 at 46-30 after a 7-0 spurt by St. John’s. The senior-laden Red Storm, however, could not put away the never say die Seahawks. The Green & White would answer with a 9-2 spurt, cutting the lead back to nine at 48-39 with 14:18 to play. Rivers drilled a pair at the line before finding Thompson for a fast-break lay-up. Senior Clayfell Harris split a pair from the line and after the St. John’s momentarily answered with a lay-up, Thompson had another lay-up and Murray hit a pair from the line. The teams would continue to battle and with Red Storm extending the lead back out to 13 only to have Wagner get it to four at 58-54 at the 6:28 mark that was capped by a 6-0 run. After St. John’s answered with a jumper, Thompson responded with a jumper of his own. The Seahawks then had a chance to get it to within two but Murray missed a lay-up and D.J. Kennedy extended the lead out to six with a pair of free throws. Following a St. John’s timeout, head coach Dan Hurley drew up a perfectly executed play that saw Thompson find a slashing Murray for a wide-open lay-up, slicing the lead back to four at 62-58 with 4:33 to play. The Seahawks would get the ball back with a chance to further dent the lead but came up short and the Red Storm again answered, drilling a pair from the line. Wagner would continue to fight, cutting the lead to five on a Murray three pointer and had a chance to make it a one-possession game but turned the ball over as St. John’s would hit three free throws en route to a 69-61 win. Wagner shot 42.0 percent (21-50) for the game, including 37.5 percent (6-16) from beyond the arc and 76.5 percent (13-17) from the charity stripe while outrebounding a much bigger St. John’s team by a 44-38 count. The Red Storm wereforced into 36.1 percent (22-61) shooting, including just 17.6 percent (3-17) from beyond the arc, but managed to earn the win thanks to converting 22-of-36 from the charity stripe. In the first half, the Seahawks sprinted out to an early 6-0 lead on three pointers from Murray and Rivers before the Red Storm rallied for six-straight points of their own. With the score tied at 13-13 at the 11:14 mark of the first, St. John’s ripped off a game-changing 16-5 run over the next 3:23, using a full-court press that forced four turnovers that led to lay-ups as the Red Storm assumed a 29-18 with 7:51 to play. Wagner would cut the lead to seven on two occasions before St. John’s went into halftime up 36-26. The Seahawks scored a first-half low of 26 points, on 30.6 percent (10-28) shooting, but managed to stay in the game thanks to another outstanding defensive effort that forced the Red Storm into just 30.6 percent (11-36) shooting, highlighted by a 3-of-19 defensive stand to begin the game. St. John’s did not commit a turnover until the 4:09 mark of the first half and had just two miscues in the first 20 minutes while owning a 15-4 advantage in points off turnovers.

Seahawks among NEC Leaders 10-11 TIP-OFF TIME Wagner looks to get back in the victory column when the Seahawks begin Northeast Conference (NEC) play against Sacred Scoring: Heart on Saturday, December 4 at 2:00 pm. The Green & White are an even 3-3 while the Pioneers are 1-5 and 0-1 in the • Tyler Murray - 18.0 (2nd) NEC. Today’s game features a free audio and video feed at www.sacredheartpioneers.com • Latif Rivers - 15.7 (7th) COACHING MATCH-UP Head coach Dan Hurley is 3-3 in this his first year at Wagner and will square off against Dave Bike, who is currently in his FG %: 33rd year while sporting a 496-448 record. • Tyler Murray - .461 (t-14th) NATIONAL LEADER Three Point %: A staple of Dan Hurley’s practices have been free throw shooting and the results show it. Wagner leads all of Division 1 in • Tyler Murray - .483 (6th) free throw shooting, converting a blistering 82.1 percent (92-112) from the charity stripe. What makes the figure that more impressive is the fact that five of the team’s first six games have come on the road. Four players are shooting 77 percent or • Chris Martin - .450 (7th) better, highlighted by freshman Latif Rivers, who has converted the first 26 free throws of his career. • Latif Rivers - .444 (t-8th) • Danny Mundweiler - .444 (t-8th) A YEAR AGO The Seahawks hit on just 61.1 percent from the free throw line. Free Throw %: • Latif Rivers - 1.000 (1st) RIVERS = AUTOMATIC • Tyler Murray - .923 (3rd) Freshman Latif Rivers paces the nation with perfect 100.0 percent (26-26) shooting from the charity stripe. He is one of five student-athletes nationally that has converted every free throw attempt (2.5 attempts/game) and one of three that is • Chris Martin - .773 (14th) averaging at least 15.0 points per game. Rivers drilled all 10 of his attempts at Hofstra before converting six-straight in games at Bucknell and St. John’s. Three Pointers Per Game: • Latif Rivers - 2.7 (2nd) WAGNER ALSO ... • Tyler Murray - 2.3 (t-7th) Ranks eighth in three point defense, allowing the opposition to shoot a NEC-low 25.3 percent, 11th in three point percentage (NEC-best .443), 31st in three pointers per game (7.8) and 31st in field goal percentage defense (.378). However, on the flip Assists: side Wagner is committing the second-most fouls in the nation at 26.3 per game and has allowed the opposition to be in the double bonus in all 12 halves of play this season. The Seahawks also ranked in the 300’s in rebounding margin and scoring • Chris Martin - 3.0 (t-12th) offense but those two figures should rise after a pair of stellar games against Bucknell and St. John’s. • Tyler Murray - 3.0 (t-12th) DID YOU KNOW? Assists To Turnover Ratio: Today’s game features two former professional athletes in assistant coach Bobby Hurley and Sacred Heart head coach Dave • Chris Martin - 1.5 (8th) Bike. Hurley played five seasons in the NBA for the and the while Bike was a catcher • Tyler Murray - 1.2 (13th) in the Detroit Tigers system for eight years from 1965-1972. SCOUTING SACRED HEART Blocks Per Game Sacred Heart is a team in transition right now after losing the quartet of Corey Hassan (Second Team All-NEC), Ryan Litke, • Naofall Folahan - 1.5 (5th) Chauncey Hardy and Liam Potter to graduation. The group accounted for 72.5 percent of the Pioneers’ scoring and 58.9 percent of their rebounding. As a result of the loss of the aforementioned group, the Pioneers are averaging a NEC-low 55.0 Defensive Rebounds: ppg after ranking second in the league a year ago in scoring at 72.0 ppg. However, the Pioneer defense, which allowed a • Tyler Murray - 4.5 (t-10th) league-worst 73.2 ppg a year ago, has improved to fifth this year at 65.5 ppg. Minutes Played: Helping ease the transition has been senior guard and reigning Choice Hotels NEC Player of the Week Jerrell Thompson, who is averaging a team-leading 13.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Sophomore guard Shane Gibson is • Tyler Murray - 37.5 (2nd) second at 12.2 ppg as the guard duo is responsible for 45.8 percent of the Pioneers offense but shooting just 35.6 percent • Latif Rivers - 34.2 (8th) (52-146) from the floor, including 28.8 percent (17-59) from outside the arc.

KEYS TO THE GAME Sacred Heart has a solid guard duo in Thompson and Gibson but with the recent loss of Chris Evans to injury the Pioneers would be hard-pressed to keep up with the vaunted three-guard Wagner attack of juniors Chris Martin, Tyler Murray and Latif Rivers should the game turn into a full-court affair. Therefore, Sacred Heart will probably try to slow the game up and take smart shots so as to not allow the Seahawks a chance to run. The Pioneers are allowing the opposition to shoot just 29.3 percent from beyond the arc and will need to execute that on Saturday against a Seahawk team that is shooting a NEC-best 44.3 percent from beyond the arc. If the Green & White can’t execute the running game they will need to continue to be efficient at the charity stripe and beyond the arc as Sacred Heart has the frontcourt advantage on paper.

NEC-OPENERS Wagner 16-13, all-time in NEC-opener, but has gone just 2-5 over the last seven years. Head coach Dan Hurley will also be aiming to be the first Wagner coach to win his inaugural NEC game as P.J. Carlesimo (Head coach Dan Hurley’s collegiate coach at Seton Hall), Neil Kennett, Tim Capstraw, Dereck Whittenberg and Mike Deane all lost their NEC-debuts.

THE SERIES Wagner leads the all-time series by a 13-11 margin, but has lost three-of-four to Sacred Heart. The teams have developed a nice little rivaly over the past few years. In 2005-2006, the Green & White were fresh off a near-upset of UCLA only to have Pioneers best the Seahawks twice in a week while sending the Seahawks into a freefall. In 2006-2007, the Wagner bested Sacred Heart early in the season before getting throttled in the first round of the Tournament. Then in 2007-2008, Wagner won a school-record 23 games highlighted by a 100-92 double-overtime victory over Sacred Heart on NEC television before dropping a heartbreaking 55-49 decision to the Pioneers in the NEC semifinals. The following year, Sacred Heart rallied from a nine-point second half deficit for a 68-64 victory. Last year the Pioneers blasted the Seahawks 75-59 in the first match-up of the season before falling in the rematch in the final seconds by a 74-73 score

LAST MEETING In front of a regionally televised audience junior Chris Martin capped a 28-point game with a running floater with just six seconds remaining to give Wagner a thrilling 74-73 victory over Sacred Heart on January 30, 2010. Martin and eventual NEC Second Team selection Corey Hassan went back-and-forth in a game that featured 11 ties and nine lead changes. Hassan scored 36 points while converting 10-of-12 from long range as the Pioneers hit on 15-of-23 (65.2 percent) from deep. Wagner record (2010-2011) QUICK STAT Returners Sacred Heart hit on 15 three pointers against Wagner in the teams’ second match-up last year ... A former Second Naofall Folahan...... 0-1 Team All-NEC selection, Shubik was a part of two of the most exciting games in the Spiro Sports Center over the past few Josh Thompson...... 0-1 years. In the Seahawks’ thrilling double overtime 100-92 overtime victory Shubik, a 76.1 percent shooter as a senior, missed what would have been the game-winning free throw at the end of regulation before misfiring on a three-point attempt at the end of the first overtime while allowing the Green & White to capture the victory. Shubik then had a measure of revenge in the NEC Tournament, notching 13 points, 14 rebounds and six assists in a 55-49 victory while catapulting Sacred Heart to the NEC Final. 3-POINT CONSISTENCY Career Totals “Live By The Three, Die By The Three.” That phrase is often uttered when perimeter oriented teams are discussed. This year’s Wagner team is no exception to the rule as the Seahawks’ top four scorers are all guards. However, Wagner has shown uncanny consistency from beyond the arc, hitting on at least 40.0 percent of its attempts in every outing, except the St. John’s Gms Pts Reb Ast Stl Blk game when the Green & White managed to make good on a respectable 37.5 percent. Chris Martin 65 584 102 74 57 3 OVERALL SHOOTING IMPROVES Tyler Murray 62 444 170 139 51 9 After shooting below 40.0 percent in each of their first four games, the Seahawks have connected on 55.3 percent and 42.0 percent in each of their last two games, respectively. Clayfell Harris 42 45 39 5 2 17 Orlando Parker 6 17 22 3 0 3 RAISING THE BAR In the last five minutes of games, the Seahawks are shooting a solid 46.2 percent (6-13) from beyond the arc while holding Naofall Folahan 6 12 21 0 1 9 the opposition to just 18.8 percent (3-16) in similar situations and have converted 26-of-30 from the charity stripe. Brett Stewart 1 0 0 0 0 0 SEAHAWKS ALMOST STUN ST. JOHN’S Josh Daniell 0 0 0 0 0 0 While the Green & White lost a tough 69-61 decision to St. John’s the game was not decided until the final minute as Wagner was within four points at the final media timeout. Junior Tyler Murray looked like the best player on the floor for most of the game, finishing with a career-best matching 21 points. The Green & White defense limited the Red Storm to just 36.1 percent shooting, highlighted by a 3-of-19 stretch to start the game, and just 17.6 percent (3-17) from outside the arc. That marks the fourth time the Seahawks have held a team under the 20-percent mark from outside.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING Double-Digit Games (points) “Wagner trailed by as many as 16 in the second half (at St. John’s), but showed that there is another team on the rise in the outer boroughs.” Career Season Howard Kussoy - New York Post Martin 23/64 2/6 “If there is a team personality trait emerging in the early part of new coach Dan Hurley’s first season at Wagner College, spunky Murray 22/62 6/6 might be the way to best describe it.” Mundweiler 8/36 1/6 Cormac Gordon - Staten Island Advance Thompson 6/34 1/6 Czeski 28/79 0/3 “Dan Hurley coached as hard as he could on Wednesday night -- so hard, in fact, that he picked up the first technical foul of his Rivers 4/6 4/6 college coaching career in the first half, for chewing on the refs’ ears. His Wagner squad played hard for him, bouncing back Folahan 1/6 1/6 from a 46-30 deficit early in the second half against St. John’s to cut the lead to four, 62-58, with 4:33 to play.” Parker 1/6 1/6 Kieran Darcy - ESPN

“I first just wanted to compliment Wagner. I thought they came in with a good game plan. They played more zone than they have at any point this season. They did an excellent job with tempo and played with poise. When we made runs, they came back and answered. Clearly, Dan Hurley and his brother, assistant coach Bobby Hurley, have done a nice job of building a team that doesn’t have a lot of depth, but stays within striking distance with some timely shots, using the clock well and playing at different tempos. So I want to give them some credit.” Steve Lavin - St. John’s Head Basketball Coach 2010-2011 Led Wagner in... DAN HURLEY QUOTE OF THE WEEK “I think our guys played really hard (at St. John’s). I’m not into moral victories. I felt like we were just hanging around, keeping Scoring: Murray (4), Rivers (3) things under eight points. I thought the team played their hearts out and I’m really proud of them.” Rebounding: Rivers (2), Folahan (1), THREE THE HARD WAY With their third win of the non-conference season at Bucknell, Wagner has already eclipsed its non-league victory total from Murray (1), Parker (1), Thompson (1) a year ago when the Green & White went just 2-11. Also for comparison’s sake, the Seahawks didn’t pick up win number three last year until the 21st game on January 21, 2010. Assists: Martin (3), Murray (2) Rivers (1), Thompson (1) CLOSE GAMES The Seahawks are 3-1 in games decided by five points or less this season after going 3-8 a year ago. In the season’s early going, he ranks second in the NEC with a team-best 18.0 points 20-Point Games: Murray (2), Rivers (2) per game while pacing the team in rebounding (4.6 rpg) and assists (3.0 apg). He hit 6-of-10 from three-point range and was a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe over 37 minutes of work. Rivers drained all three of his three-point attempts 1. Quinnipiac (11 first-place votes) in the first half, helping Wagner build a seven-point edge at the break before scoring 15 more in the second stanza while 2. Robert Morris helping to cut a six-point Hofstra lead with four minutes to play down to one with a trifecta and two free throws. 3. Long Island (1 first-place vote) RIVERS STEALS THE SHOW 4. CCSU Going into the Hofstra game much of the talk was about reigning CAA Player of the Year and two-time Haggerty Award 5. Mount St. Mary’s winner Charles Jenkins. After 40 hard-fought minutes the talk was about freshman Latif Rivers. The Garden State native went off for a career-high 28 points while notching the most points by a Wagner freshman since Courtney Pritchard scored 6. FDU 30 in a 91-75 loss at St. Francis (NY) on February 15, 2001. 7. He helped finish off the victory by hitting four free throws, all of which came with under 11. Wagner five minutes to play. Rivers’ 20 points make him the first Wagner rookie to notch back-to-back games of at least 20 points since Dedrick Dye accrued 21 points at Mount St. Mary’s (2/19/00) and 23 against Sacred Heart (2/22/00) over 10 years ago. 12. Bryant RIVERS BREAKING OUT Five games into his collegiate career and there is no question freshman Latif Rivers is a viable NEC Rookie of the Year 10-11 NEC Preseason Team candidate. He leads the league in free throw shooting (100.0 %), ranks second in three pointers per game (2.7) Akeem Bennett (SFNY) and eighth in three point shooting (44.4 %) (16-36). Ken Horton (CCSU) MURRAY ABOUT FACE Justin Rutty (Quinnipiac) If you were to tell the casual basketball fan that junior Tyler Murray would evolve into one of the most complete players in Mike Scott (FDU) the league the end result would probably be laughter as the Canadian native averaged just 2.6 points per game as freshman. Well that scenario has in fact played out as Murray is arguably the most complete player in the Northeast Conference, ranking among the league-leaders in nine categories. He notched the first Wagner double-double of the year with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the 77-73 win at Bucknell while narrowly missing a triple-double after handing out a team-best seven assists over 36 minutes.

MURRAY LEADS THE WAY Through the first six games, junior Tyler Murray has shown the consistency that Dan Hurley and his staff were expecting out the Canadian native. Murray has paced the team in scoring three times while accruing at least 14 points in every game, highlighted by a career-high 21 points in wins over Stony Brook before matching that total at St. John’s (12/1). In the season- opening victory over Lafayette, he scored a team-best matching 18 points while twice quelling big Leopard runs, hitting 3-Pt Shooting In 10-11 all six free throws - including two with under a minute remaining - and adding a game-high six assists with five rebounds. In the last minute of games, Murray is perfect 8-for-8 in the last minutes of Lead in the second half . 14 vs. Lafayette (11/12/10) games while Martin is 7-for-8. YOU GOTTA PLAY 40! Wagner played a very solid game against a perennial tough squad in Hofstra for almost 31 minutes. After taking the biggest lead of the game at 40-30 with 17:54 to play in the game against the Pride, the Seahawks’ offense went into a funk misfiring on two of their next 16 shots, including 1-of-7 from beyond the arc, while allowing Hofsta to rip off a game-changing 18-5 run and take a 48-45 lead with 8:51 to play. Not counting the nine-plus minute drought, the Green & White hit on 45.7 percent (16-35) from the field, including 58.3 percent (7-12) from beyond the arc.

SEAHAWKS PLAY 40 After failing to close out Hofstra, the Green & White put together its most complete game of the season, shooting a blistering 55.3 percent (26-47) from the floor, including hitting on 55.6 percent in the first half and 55.0 percent in the second. Additionally, the Seahawks were 7-of-12 (58.3 %) from beyond the arc and 18-of-20 (90.0 %) from the charity stripe. Wagner also had just one prolonged field goal drought, failing to hit a shot over the final 6:31 ... but that stat is misleading as the Green & White went 13-of-14 from the free throw line while massaging a lead.

DEFENSE LOCKS IT UP Wagner has jumped out to a solid 3-3 start this season thanks to a suffocating defense that is the second-ranked unit in the NEC, allowing the opposition to hit on just 37.8 percent from the field, including a NEC-low 25.3 percent from behind the arc. In the 58-54 win over Stony Brook, the Seahawk defense limited the Seawolves to just 3-of-22 shooting over a 13:46 span in the first half stretching from 16:55 to 3:09. In the second half, the Green & White improved on their already stellar first-half play forcing Seawolves to 2-of-14 shooting over the final 11:10, including not allowing a field goal for an 8:13 stretching from 11:11 to 2:58. Wagner also had an impressive defensive stand against Bucknell, forcing the Bison into nine-straight missed field goal attempts over a 9:30 span in the first half ... en route to limiting the Patriot League school to just 2-of-15 shooting to close out the first half.

LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN In the Stony Brook game, the Seahawk defense forced the Seawolves into at least seven missed shots on three different occasions as the reigning America East Champions shot just 23.8 percent (15-63), including 19.0 percent (4-19) from beyond the arc. After halftime, those numbers dropped to 21.9 percent (7-32), including 16.2 percent (2-12) from outside the arc.

OTHER DEFENSIVE NOTES While the Wagner defense wasn’t as dominating against Hofstra as it was against Stony Brook it still turned in an impressive performance. The Seahawks held reigning CAA Player of the Year Charles Jenkins to 0-of-6 shooting and just two points in the opening half. For comparison’s sake, Jenkins hit for 20 points, on 9-of-11 shooting, in the first half earlier this year against North Carolina.

SECOND HALF LETDOWN NO MORE After allowing Lafayette to rip off a 16-2 run and Lehigh a 6-0 spurt after halftime, Wagner reversed the trend in the win over Stony Brook, notching an 11-1 run at the beginning of the second half in taking a 38-29 lead with just under 16 minutes remaining against the Seawolves. The Seahawks continued the success at Hofstra, coming out of halftime on a 5-2 spurt. In the win over Bucknell, Wagner put together an 11-2 run just over three minutes into the second half while pushing a three point lead out to 11 points.

MARTIN SHOWCASES IMPROVED ALL-AROUND GAME Coming into this year junior Chris Martin could be seen by some as a high-risk, high reward player. Last season he notched a career-best 34 points against Columbia only to come back and score zero at Saint Peter’s in the next game. This season, his scoring average is down but his production in all facets of the game are up. He is averaging 8.3 ppg while shooting 45.0 percent (9-20) from beyond the arc while ranking among the league-leaders in with 3.0 assists per game (t-12th NEC) and posting the eighth-best assist to turnover ratio (1.5). A liability on defense in the past, Martin is now guarding the top guard on the opposition on regularity.

T.J. RETURNS Fifth-year senior point guard T.J. Czeski played two minutes late in the first half at Hofstra after rejoining the basketball and seen action in three games after concluding his football season with the Green & White. He notched a team-high 11 tackles in the season-finale at Sacred Heart on November 20 and finished up the season with 74 stops, second-most on the team.

FRONTCOURT ALSO EXCELS IN WIN OVER BUCKNELL Frontcourt members freshman Orlando Parker, classmate Naofall Folahan, junior Josh Thompson and senior Clayfell Harris combined for 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting (68.8 %) in the 77-73 win over Bucknell.

RIVERS EARNS ROOKIE HONORS Freshman Latif Rivers was named the Choice Hotels NEC Rookie of the Week for his performance against Lafayette. Rivers delivered the game-winning shot with 42 seconds remaining in the team’s 63-58 victory over the Leopards en route to 18 points.

Rivers’ shot put the Green & White up for good at 59-58 and was the Elizabeth, NJ native’s fourth trifecta of the night. He also pulled down a team-high six boards and dished for three assists while shooting 7-of 12 from the field, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Rivers scored the first points of the Dan Hurley era with a three pointer at the 18:42 mark of the first and finished the opening stanza with 13 points as Wagner built a 14-point lead. The first-year sharpshooter also turned the ball over just three times in 36 minutes of action, second most of the night.

He is the first Seahawk student-athlete to win rookie honors since junior Chris Martin was cited by the league on February 9, 2009 and just the second since the beginning of the 2005-2006 season.

WHAT A DEBUT Freshman Latif Rivers’ debut against Lafayette was a prime reason that coach Dan Hurley exited the Spiro Sports Center a winner in his collegiate head coaching debut. Rivers looked like a seasoned pro while knocking down the game-winning shot after the Leopards rallied for their first lead since early in the opening period. For comparison’s sake, high-scoring junior guards Tyler Murray and Chris Martin each notched just three and nine points, respectively, in their collegiate debuts against Lafayette two years ago.

THOMPSON TAKES FLIGHT Sophomore Josh Thompson put his impressive on display at St. John’s, scoring a season-high 12 points, on 6-of-12 shooting, with five rebounds and three assists. Entering the game, he had notched just five field goals and was shooting just 17.9 percent from the floor. He is now averaging 5.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

MUNDY AIMING FOR BIG SOPHOMORE YEAR Sophomore Danny Mundweiler has started the season strong, averaging 6.8 ppg off the bench while shooting 44.4 percent (8-18) from beyond the arc and ranking eighth in the NEC.

GOOD NEWS: GUARD PLAY ON DISPLAY While most Wagner fans know that the team will be a guard-oriented offense, following in the footsteps of head coach Dan Hurley, himself a standout guard at Seton Hall, no one could have foreseen the guard play in the team’s first two games. Guards Martin, Mundweiler, Murray and Rivers have shot 42.3 percent (85-201) from the floor, including 45.6 percent (47-103) from beyond the arc while accounting for 77.3 percent (293-379)of the team’s scoring.

HITTING THE ROAD Today’s game will be the sixth of seven-straight games away from home. The road swing is the longest for the school since the 1992-1993 version of the Seahawks opened the year with a seven-game road trip ... The Green & White would love to replicate that team’s success as Wagner went 18-12 en route to the NEC Championship Game.

NON-CONFERENCE NOTES Included in the Seahawks 11-game non-conference schedule are four games against teams that won 20 games (@ Lehigh, @ Stony Brook, Princeton and @ Texas A&M) in 2009-2010, two games (@ Lehigh, @ Texas A&M) against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament and four games (@ Stony Brook (NIT), @ Hofstra (CBI), @ St. John’s (NIT) and Princeton (CBI)) vs. teams that participated in other post-season tournaments. Additionally eight of the 11 teams posted winning records a year ago and the first four (Lafayette, @ Lehigh, @ Stony Brook and @ Hofstra) went a combined 82-49 with each winning at least 19 games a year ago.

TALE OF TWO HALVES In the first half of their five games Wagner has outscored the opposition by an average of 1.5 ppg while shooting 42.3 percent from the floor, including a blistering 46.9 percent (23-49) from long range. In the second half, however, the Green & White have shot just 39.4 percent compared to a 44.6 percent for the opposition while being outscored by 4.0 ppg.

IT’S A DUKE REUNION The Wagner game at Hofstra featured color commentary from assistant coach Bobby Hurley’s former Duke teammate Alaa Abdelnaby. Abdelnaby, also a New Jersey native, played for the Blue Devils from 1986-1990 while helping the Blue Devils to three Final Fours.

SEAHAWKS LIKE THE BRIGHT LIGHTS The 58-54 victory at Stony Brook improved Wagner’s record on television to 2-0 before dropping the game at Hofstra, which was shown on Verizon Fios1. The Seahawks played live before a Time Warner audience in the home-opener against Lafayette and on MSG+ against Stony Brook. Time Warner will show the Friday, December 17th game against Princeton, slated to start at 7:00 pm. The Green & White will also host two TV games as part of the Northeast Conference (NEC) TV package, kicking off the conference TV slate against Saint Francis (PA) on Saturday, January 8 at 7:00 pm.

FOUL TROUBLE Wagner is averaging an astounding 7.3 more fouls than the opposition this season. On the year, the Green & White have committed 158 fouls while drawing just 114.

IT’S OFFICIAL At 7:38 PM on Friday, November 12 the Dan Hurley era began at Wagner College when freshman Naofall Folahan controlled the opening tip-off. The game was also the first on Grymes Hill for assistants Bobby Hurley, Bashir Mason and Luke Murray as well as director of operations Scott Smith and graduate assistant Andrew Duffy. Hurley’s father, Hall of Fame Coach Sr. was on hand to see the Green & White win its first opener since the 2007-2008 season. THE FIVE-YEAR PLAN The opening night match-up with Lafayette marked the fifth-straight year that the teams had opened up the season, with the Seahawks winning for just the second time during that period. All five games have been decided by nine points or less. The Green & White are now 52-38, all-time, in season-openers.

THE LAST TIME... Dan Hurley had won a collegiate game prior to the 63-58 win over Lafayette was on February 21, 2001 when he helped Rutgers to a 75-57 win over Seton Hall on February 21, 2001 while serving as an assistant coach ... It was also the first collegiate victory for Bobby Hurley since he led Duke to a 105-70 win over Southern Illinois on March 18, 1993 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

THE LAST TIME (PART 2)... The announced crowd of 1,857 against Lafayette was the highest attendance in the Spiro Sports Center since February 7, 2009 when Wagner drew 1,921 in a 75-58 win over Saint Francis (PA).

CONGRATS COACH K Assistant coach Bobby Hurley’s former collegiate coach picked up his 800th career in at Duke on Tuesday, November 23 when his top-ranked Blue Devils bested No. 4 Kansas State 82-68 to win the O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic in Kansas City, MO. Hurley helped his former coach to 119 wins and two National Championships over a four-year period from 1989-1993. The 800th win would have come a game earlier had it not been for an 84-77 Wagner victory over Duke back on January 5, 1983.

O CANADA The Wagner-Lafayette game featured a pair of Canadians in junior Tyler Murray and Leopard senior Jared Mintz. Both players did not disappoint as Murray had 18 points, six assists and five rebounds while Mintz notched a game-high 21 points with seven rebounds.

BOUNCE-BACK SEAHAWKS In the post-game press conference with Staten Island Advance reporter Cormac Gordon, head coach Dan Hurley said that in retrospect maybe it was good for Lafayette to comeback on his Seahawks to see how his young squad would react. On three occasions in the second half the Leopards managed to tie or take the lead. React they did. Murray broke two ties with a jumper and a pair of free throws while sparking seven and eight-point spurts. However, after the Leopards managed to take their first lead of the game since early in the first period it was a freshman that stepped up. Latif Rivers hit the back-breaking three to put the Seahawks up for good at 59-58 while sparking a game-ending 7-0 run.

NEW FACES ON THE COURT A quick glance at the Wagner roster will reveal a lot of different faces. Six new players will grace the Seahawks’ roster this season. In the backcourt, sophomore Kenneth Ortiz and freshman Latif Rivers join the squad. Ortiz transfers to Grymes Hill from Southern Mississippi where he played in 26 games while helping the Golden Eagles to a 20-14 record. He will sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules and have three seasons of eligibility remaining starting in 2011-2012. The 6-1 Rivers is a combo guard that can take the ball to the basket or beat the opposition from the outside with his smooth jump shot. In the frontcourt, Wagner welcomes freshmen Josh Daniell, Naofall Folahan, Orlando Parker and Brett Stewart. Daniell comes to Grymes Hill from New Jersey powerhouse St. Patrick’s High School. Folahan, who has been playing basketball for just five years and hails from the Benin Republic. Parker played Orlando Christian Prep to three-straight Class 1A State Championships. Stewart is the team’s lone walk-on and has been brought along slowly. He played his prep ball at Solebury (MD) High School, earning two letters.

NEW FACES ON THE SIDELINES While everyone that is associated with Wagner basketball knows that Dan Hurley is the new coach, the casual fan may not know that five other fresh faces have joined the Seahawk staff. Assisting Hurley will be Bobby Hurley, his brother and former Duke All-American, Bashir Mason, a former Defensive Player of the Year and 1,000 point scorer at Drexel, and Luke Murray, who spent last season under the guidance of renowned coach and Western Pennsylvania High School legend Sean Miller at the University of Arizona. Rounding out the staff are Scott Smith and Andrew Duffy. Smith will serve as the Director of Basketball Operations and previously served under coach Hurley at St. Benedict’s for the last seven years. Prior to being with the Green & White, Duffy worked for Dakota Wesleyan University as an assistant coach for the men’s team, helping the Tigers to a 28-6 overall record and the 2009-2010 GPAC regular season and conference tournament titles.

MUNDWEILERS CHASING THE HURLEYS Sophomore Danny Mundweiler hit for seven points at Stony Brook and he and his brother Joey, a 1,000 point Wagner scorer, now have a combined 1,478 points. The duo have a way to go if they want to match another famous brother tandem in Dan and Bobby Hurley, as the Seahawk head and assistant coach notched a total of 2,801 points.

WAGNER PICKED TO FINISH 11TH IN THE NORTHEAST CONFERENCE Head coach Dan Hurley won’t be short on motivation in this his first year at Wagner. In this the NEC’s 30th season the league’s 12 coaches predicted the new-look Wagner College Seahawks to finish 11th in the 12-team league.

After capturing its first-ever Northeast Conference (NEC) regular season crown a year ago, Quinnipiac was picked to win the 2010-2011 NEC men’s basketball championship, based on voting conducted by the league’s coaches.

Two-time defending NEC Tournament champion Robert Morris was tabbed second, followed by Long Island in third. Central Connecticut State was picked fourth, ahead of Mount St. Mary’s in fifth and Fairleigh Dickinson in the sixth spot. St. Francis (NY) and Saint Francis (PA) tied for seventh in the poll, and were followed by Sacred Heart in ninth, Monmouth in 10th, Wagner in 11th and Bryant in 12th. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.

HURLEY SIGNS TWO FOR NEXT SEASON Wagner head coach Dan Hurley announced the signing of Marcus Burton (Matthews, NC / David W. Butler) and forward Mario Moody (Orange, NJ / East Orange Campus) for the 2011-2012 academic year. Both student-athletes will be freshmen and have four years of eligibility.

A 6’0” point guard from North Carolina, Burton averaged 13.7 points and 4.5 assists per game at David W. Butler High School last season under the direction of Kurt Wessler while earning inclusion on the Southwestern 4A All-Conference team. A powerful point guard, Burton has outstanding ball handling skills and can shoot with consistency from beyond the arc.

Burton, who hit a game-winning 40-foot shot against Providence Day High School in a playoff game, led Butler to the school’s fourth-straight Southwestern 4A Conference title a year ago. He also played AAU ball for the Charlotte Royals under the tutelage of Rod Seaford.

A 6’7” forward from New Jersey, Moody averaged 11.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game for East Orange Campus under the guidance of Daron Hoges. Last year as a junior, he helped the Jaguars to a 15-10 record and showcased his outstanding athleticism in a playoff game against Paterson East Side, blocking 12 shots.

Moody, who is an outstanding athlete who can play either the small or power forward position, played AAU ball last summer with Success University Team Izod under the direction of Brian Coleman and Ed Bright.

UP NEXT Wagner caps its seven-game road trip with a non-conference tilt at Columbia on Tuesday, December 7 at 7:00 pm at Levien Gym.
