May Fair 2019 A Great Colerne Community Event

Following a week of trepidation concerning the weather, we hit the jackpot! After all the planning and organisation is in place, there are two major factors beyond our control: firstly the weather and secondly the Community response. On 11th May both were absolutely fantastic for the 49th consecutive May Fair. One of the purposes of this annual article is to thank everyone who contributed in any way. So, a great THANK YOU to all who assisted in making it a wonderful afternoon. However, this year I want to focus on the Colerne Community aspect – in particular to emphasise that without your turnout, the event would be nothing. It is FANTASTIC to stand amidst a huge crowd in the Market Place awaiting the arrival of the chariots/ soapboxes (well done to all entries and thanks for keeping safe); seeing the youngsters from the school dancing and watched by proud parents, some remembering when they did the same! Seeing families mixing together to enjoy the delights of the Manor House garden activities (thank you Mr and Mrs Harvey) and also enjoying the bar and the live music group. Then there is the anticipation of the giving out of prizes from our amazing raffle. BUT – who organises the day? And why do we do it? Where does all the money go? These are some questions that those new to our Community may ponder on. The organising body is the ‘Friends of Colerne Church’ – a registered charity (number 1157116), which is entirely separate from the Church organisation. We have three Trustees – Lavinia Wilson, Fiona Hartley and Ray Barker, and a management committee which takes on the organisation of both the Community May Fair and the Community Bonfire/Fireworks events. All produce, Bric-à-Brac, books, toys, etc, are generously donated by the Community and then amazingly bought by the Community on the day! This means that we are able to minimise our outgoings and maximise our income. The income is managed by ‘The Friends’ who then make it available to the Church Council in the form of grants to pay for repairs to the Church and Churchyard. Over the years just over £92,000 has been granted to the Church from ‘The Friends’, and there is a board in Church which outlines the projects that have been financed in this way. We expect our next major grant request to be to replace the almost worn-out heating system. As a charity ‘The Friends’ are required to state what benefit it brings to the Community – clearly keeping the Church building and Churchyard in good condition is a Community benefit. The Church was built from 1190 by our local Baron to provide the Community with the facility for Baptisms, Marriages and Funerals and 829 years later we are still able to maintain this facility in Colerne and keep the building intact for future generations, thanks to Community support. If you feel moved to want to assist by joining our group of volunteers or learn more then please contact me on [email protected] or 743402. THANK YOU. Here’s to our 50th May Fair next year! Ray Barker, Trustee and Chairman.

Memories of the Normandy Landings

Our regiment, the Northamptonshire Yeomanry, was based on Salisbury Plain and, like so many other units, needed to train for the invasion which was expected in 1944. Because of the approaching invasion we needed to train on more modern tanks than those to which we were accustomed. So we went to Barnard Castle in County Durham to train on American Sherman tanks. These tanks proved to be very good at El Alamein in 1942, certainly not so good in 1944; however, the Americans were able to turn these out in vast numbers, some petrol powered, some diesel powered so they were the best we could have. In the spring of 1944 we moved to Aldershot to have our tanks waterproofed. This was a big job, but necessary as we needed to be able to go ashore in water that was five to six feet deep. (Our tanks should not be confused with the DD or Duplex Drive tanks, nicknamed ‘Donald Duck tanks’, which were a type of amphibious swimming tank.) Once the job of waterproofing our tanks was complete we moved to a wooded area near the south coast which was the marshalling area and where we were A Sherman tank similar to that in which Roy served confined to camp. The only contact we had with the outside world was by letter and we were only allowed to say that we were somewhere in . D-Day came and as far as we could make out was going well. Five days later we moved to Gosport and went aboard a LST (Tank Landing Ship) which could carry more than 20 tanks.. To get to the upper deck we had to climb over all the other tanks that were on board. We were given a lecture about not smoking on board as we An American Tank Landing Ship on a Normandy beach needed to be ready to go ashore when we reached the other side of the Channel. The biggest problem we faced was seasickness, as far as I know none of us had been to sea before and certainly never to France.

Continued from page 11 The ship was American and crewed by Americans. One chap I spoke to said that it was his third trip across, so at least he knew where he was going! We slept in bunks that night and when we went outside in the morning I was amazed to see the huge number of ships of different types and sizes. It was a nice day and all the time we were protected by allied planes. I remember that the food was good but some were not in a fit state to appreciate it. When we got in sight of the French coast we stopped for a while until the landing ramp was lowered and then went ashore on Gold Beach near to Arromanches. All that I can remember about that was that the beachmaster wanted us off the beach and out of his way as quickly as possible, which was understandable as there was a huge number of vehicles of all sorts landing.

The devastation that greeted this British Cromwell Tank After leaving the beach we travelled inland a few miles, the roads were filled with lorries and guns of all types (I well remember our officer saying to me that everything, apart from the trees, had been brought from England). That night, after a guard rota had been sorted out, we camped in our bivouac which was attached to the side of our tank, much more comfortable than trying to sleep in the very cramped tank. We stayed there for a couple of days very close to a road which was constantly in use by lorries and ambulances. We were issued with ration packs which were very good, and a small petrol cooker on which we could brew up food. For about a month, some said it was six weeks, we only had biscuit and no bread to go with the other tinned rations. Before leaving England we had changed some money into French Francs in the hope that we might be able to buy some fresh food in France, but that didn’t always work as the French farmers were nowhere to be found. We moved several times before we saw any action, some attacks failed and often plans were changed. We dug a trench near our tank where we could sleep at night protected from the nightly bombing raids. During the day there was no such problem as our planes ruled the skies. So ended our first few days in France. Roy Clarke (Editor’s note – Roy is aged 95 and lives in Old Martin’s Croft) Colerne Parish Magazine, June 2019 13

Update re the Camp. There was a Ministerial Announcement at the end of March concerning a renewed disposal date for the Airfield for 2025. Currently the Barracks remains scheduled to close by 2031. However, due to strategic safeguarding areas, it is now apparent that there will be no house building on the airfield areas. The Neighbourhood Plan group has commenced meetings with representatives from the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) who, together with Wiltshire Council, are engaging with our Concept Statement process. This is good news for our community as our Neighbourhood Plan, now scheduled to stretch to 2036, will cover all possible disposal dates, and the DIO is supporting our efforts to include Design Codes and an overall vision for the whole MoD site within our Neighbourhood Plan. We realise that the DIO still has to raise funds for the Government from the disposals, but the intensity and type of development will be limited by the policies of the Neighbourhood Plan. Where have we got to? Some of you will have seen extracts from our Design Statement and our Vision Statement displayed at the May Fair. You can view these still via our website (above). In order to ensure that the appropriate housing is built for our parishioners, not just open market development, we would like to support the launching of a Community Land Trust (CLT) for Colerne, to work in parallel with the Neighbourhood Plan. Wiltshire Council is strongly supporting this way forward for rural communities to provide facilities and housing for the needs of local people. It is a ‘not-for-profit’ way for the community to hold land in perpetuity and thus put an end to the spiralling land prices that impact on the cost of rural housing. It is also one way in which small scale local development can progress organically within the considerable constraints of Green Belt and the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). There is funding to support the process but we need the support of as many local people as possible (whether you live here or just work here) to demonstrate that the community is actively wanting this. Membership is about your interest and passion, not about financial cost to you. Please send your details to the Neighbourhood Plan Secretary if you would like to be included. I would also like to encourage all younger families thinking about how they might buy land to self-build to meet both work and housing needs to go onto the WC website to register your interest in self-build plots. (localselfbuildregister.co.uk/localauthorities/ wiltshire-council/). This information supports a policy of varied ways to meet viable small developments for rural needs. The Neighbourhood Plan is still on track to launch our first formal consultation on our proposed plan in late autumn this year! Jane Mellett

Reflections Attending an appointment recently at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, I became aware of the name Dyson being used in connection with some departments at the hospital. Intrigued, on returning home I made some enquiries of the internet. Sir James Dyson OM CBE FRS FREng, founder and chief executive of Dyson Ltd, is perhaps chiefly known for the invention of the Dual Cyclone bagless vacuum cleaner. He opened a new University at Dyson’s Wiltshire campus, on the site of the old Hullavington airfield and subsequent barracks, in September 2017. Also in 2017, Sir James announced that he was investing £2 billion of his own money into the production of an electric car, aiming for an introduction date of 2020. He disappointed British people by announcing that the centre of production would be Singapore. The James Dyson Foundation was formed in 2002. Its primary aim was to inspire future engineers, but it has expanded to support areas such as medical research. In 2013, the hospital announced that the James Dyson Foundation had donated £4 million in support of the ‘Forever Friends’ appeal to raise £5.5 million towards the £20.5 million cost of the new Cancer Centre at

the RUH, allowing ‘Forever Friends’ to extend their appeal by a further £2–3 million. The new centre will enable the hospital vastly to improve cancer care in the community. The Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care at the RUH was opened in 2011. Funded by a 50/50 partnership by NHS budgets and a ‘Forever Friends’ appeal, including a generous contribution from the Dyson Foundation, the centre provides a pioneering and holistic new approach, allowing staff to practise care for premature and sick babies. I have a granddaughter and great-grandson who have benefitted from care at this centre. On 18th February the BBC announced that Honda was to announce the closure of its Swindon car plant in 2022, with the loss of 3500 jobs. Honda, a Japanese company, made 160,000 Honda Civics (pictured) at Swindon in 2018. Companies which make accessories for the Civics are also expected to suffer job losses. It has been suggested that Brexit was one of the factors that determined the company to close the plant, but this has been denied by the Honda company. Continued on page 27

Continued from page 25 Is it rather simplistic to say that the possibility of acquiring a ready-made factory for the production of cars, which will become available, possibly at a nominal price, in 2022, together with a work-force able and willing to participate, might be attractive to an entrepreneur of Sir James’ standing? The production of the new Dyson electric car (British designed and British made) at Swindon would be an enormous fillip to this area and the country should this come to pass, whatever the result of the Brexit debacle. I expect this is just wishful thinking! John Crittenden Saturday Market Old School – 29th June, 10.00 to 11.45am We have said good bye to the May Fair for another year, but the Saturday Market is still there for you to browse, to find a bargain, have coffee with friends, support the Charity Stall, and even purchase a lucky raffle ticket! See you on 29th June. The Market Team

Tuesday Tramp Ramblings This Tramp is, I consider, the best to represent all the aspects of a countryside walk; it always has surprises no matter what season of the year or how many times it is repeated there is always something new and unexpected to delight and gladden the heart, and wildlife is in abundance. My thanks to Sid for leading the Tramp and to Dave and Rob for back-marking. Our next Tramp will be on 4th June. Each Tramp is different and we always walk at an enjoyable pace, starting and finishing at the Fox; the departure time is 10.00am. Sensible attire and a mid-walk ‘munchie’ are essential. Community Ecobrick Project We are launching a new community ‘ecobrick’ building project to reuse plastics that cannot currently be recycled. Ecobricks are very easy to make, simply:  Wash out a 2 litre pop style bottle and allow it to dry;  Place non-recyclable, clean and dry plastics (such as non-food packaging, outer packaging of multipack foods or thoroughly cleaned and dried food wrappings that would usually go into the bin) into your bottle and push it down with a long stick as you go along. Make sure that there is no food waste on any of the plastic as this can cause a methane build up. Ensure that your stick is not sharp, as this could pierce the bottle.  Your 2 litre bottles must be densely packed and weigh at least 650g to be suitable as building blocks. We therefore suggest cutting the plastics into strips so that more can fit in. Once filled, replace the cap and drop your brick in a designated bin at Colerne

Primary School. If you do not use 2 litre plastic bottles, you can collect an empty one from a bin at the school to start your brick. Once there are enough bricks, we will build structures in the school grounds, such as planters, low climbing walls and benches. Sustainable materials such as wattle and daub will be used to cement the bricks together. When these structures break down (in 10–20 years), the bricks can be used again and again in new structures. If we collect too many, we can take them to drop-off points in surrounding areas. We hope that you will support this project and that as a village we can make a real contribution to reducing the amount of plastic waste that currently ends up in landfill and our oceans. To find out more about ecobricks, go to www.ecobricks.org. Please get bricking! Many thanks. Nicola Middleton

Janet Hulbert In Memory Our wonderful, indomitable school cleaner started in October 1980 and worked with Judy Sayers. They both worked for Wiltshire Direct Services and were employed at Colerne CE Primary School. Janet was incredibly hardworking and really thorough – not a surface was left unwiped and no dust could be seen. Her routines were strict and she would finish all her work no matter how long the job. One night there was a break-in and when it was discovered the following day, Janet voluntarily came up to help Judy clear up the mess as Judy had the key to the building. This was Janet’s style – nothing was too much trouble (although she no doubt had a few choice words to say about the culprits!). When Wiltshire Direct Services disbanded in 2000, Janet and Judy hid the buffer and numerous other pieces of useful equipment so that the school could continue to use them. Janet loved to use the buffer in the hall and, despite it being almost the same size as her, she controlled it until the parquet flooring gleamed. They both stayed under the employment of the school and worked as a team until Judy retired in 2002. Janet had a wicked sense of humour. Numerous tricks were played on her over the years, notably one by our current Head Teacher, Mark Solomon, when he was a new teacher in his first post. She got her own back on him with a trick that caught him out good and proper. If you see him, ask him but it is too long to tell here. Janet always had a water bottle tucked in her green tabard – there was a suggestion on occasion that she might have needed a bit of gin to cope with cleaning the boys’ loos, but Janet worked so hard that she would often be found in short sleeves in the middle of winter. There was never any doubt about Janet’s work ethic and it really was only water. Working with Janet, we all recognised her as a lady with fierce pride, high standards and a determined focus. She suffered with lots of aches and pains over the last ten years, particularly in her knee. Did this stop her coming in to work? Did it heck! She would be more concerned about others’ ailments than her own. I used to tease her that as she got smaller, she had moved from the Junior building to the Foundation Stage classes because they were the only tables she could reach. Janet never wanted to retire from our school and it was a sad but inevitable day that she made that decision. We named the KS1 Wing after her as she spent many years

Continued from page 31 ensuring that it was kept spick and span, and she came in to cut the ribbon and have a cream tea with all her former colleagues. However, there is one last thing I must add; Janet had many cleaning colleagues over the years, but there is no doubt that the most important one to her was Henry – her trusty vacuum cleaner. He was to be found wherever Janet went and she covered him in stickers that the children had left lying on the floor. She would chat away to him as they went from room to room and he never answered her back…neither did we! There could only ever be one Janet Hulbert and the school, and indeed Colerne, is a poorer place without her. Maura Chamberlain – Deputy Head

75th Anniversary of D-Day 6th June marks the start of the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Landings and the Battle of Normandy and with it, a momentous occasion to celebrate peace, liberty, reconciliation and remembrance. We will be holding a small remembrance memorial and wreath- laying service at 7.00pm on 6th June at the War Memorial, everyone is welcome. After this we would like to invite you all to the Liberal Club to join us for a toast to the fallen and some cheese and wine. National Armed Forces Day and Centenary Time Capsule – Saturday, 29th June We have already been collecting future memories from around the village for our Centenary Time Capsule. The children from both Colerne Primary and Calder House have already produced some pieces to be included. This year on our stall we will be collecting mementos to be placed into our Centenary Time Capsule. We will have a book in which you can record a thought or message, which will then be placed into the Capsule, and if you have anything you think would be suitable and which you would like to have included into the Capsule, then bring it along. Due to space it will have to be around matchbox size. The Capsule will then be taken to its resting place at around 5.00pm on Armed Forces Day. Dog Show returns! This year it is sponsored by Bath Country Pets – watch posters and social media for details. We look forward to seeing you all on National Armed Forces Day. Kay Hall, Publicity Officer

15 Years and Counting I was just about to retire when I was approached by an ex-colleague, the late Chris Martin, who just happened to be the current chair of Box, Colerne & Rudloe Link, to invite me into the ranks of Link drivers. After CRB checks, I was handed my Link badge in 2004. I drive all sorts of clients, some will tell you their life story on the way to the RUH, others are fairly quiet. Both responses may well be due to apprehension of what they will be told during their appointment. We have clients who only use us on the odd occasion, others we see on a fairly regular basis who become friends, such as the ‘terrible two’ from Colerne. They know who they are. During my 15 years, I've visited and learnt my way around most of the hospitals in our area and even one or two further afield such as the John Radcliffe in Oxford. The drive to the RUH Bath tends to vary considerably in time depending on the time of day. What a pity we can't use the bus lanes. The other problem with hospital appointments is that we never know how long we will be waiting for our clients. Some drivers head for Bath to do some shopping or for a coffee. I tend to wait in one of the comfy chairs in the atrium and read or play Scrabble on my iPad against the computer, one way of learning new words if it's set on ‘advanced’ or above. Sometimes I have difficulty locating a client's address so I always leave myself plenty of time just in case. Oh, wouldn't it be great if everyone had their house numbers or names clearly visible. It's always a pleasure joining clients on Link organised trips. They enjoy being entertained and looked after especially when there's a cream tea to enjoy before heading home. I've enjoyed my fifteen years with Link and hope to carry on for a few more years. I find it very rewarding especially as most of our clients appreciate the service we provide and are always saying "I don't know what I would do without Link". Please contact Link on 07970 617617 if you would like to become involved in this worthwhile organisation. Brian Hatton
