Star Wars Strength Spotting Activity May the Force Be with You: Strengths Spotting in a Galaxy Far, Far Away Learn about Character Strengths using the Star Wars universe - and learn how to strengths spot people in your own community. What is Strengths Spotting? When you notice others using their Character Strengths and you recognize them for it, that’s called Strengths Spotting. An easy way to do this is to name the strength someone used, explain how they used it, and share why you appreciate their actions. You can use that format as a tool, but there is not a wrong way to Strengths Spot! For example: “Ashoka, I saw you use your strength of leadership when you were helping train the rebels. I appreciated how you inspired everyone to fight back against injustice.” Use the examples below to practice on your own! Other Suggested Activities • Take the VIA Institute’s FREE online Character Strengths test. o Share your top Character Strengths with us on social media. • As a family, discuss moments you have used your Character Strengths to solve a problem. You can reference the chart at the end of this document if you need help remembering what they are. • Name one way you can try to work on one of your lesser strengths. • Choose a character or moment in one of your favorite movies, books, or TV shows. Strengths Spot that character by identifying a moment, quote, and what strengths you think they used. • Practice mindfulness today, just like the Jedi. Make your actions intentional as you go about your day. Is there something you can do to help someone in need? Is there a problem you can help solve? What are you thankful for? • Celebrate Star Wars Day (May 4th) and Strengths Spot on your own. All films and TV shows are currently streaming on Disney+. • Read our blog post entitled, “A New Hope: Inspiring Change Through Star Wars.” Strengths Spotting Practice Watch the films and clips mentioned below. Work together to choose what strengths you think these characters are using. Use the name, explain, appreciate model to Strengths Spot these characters. Choose other characters, not listed below, and try to Strengths Spot them as well! 1. Leia a. Film: The Force Awakens b. Moment: With the new threat of the looming First Order, the New Republic did not recognize them as a true threat. A group of Rebel veterans, led by General Leia Organza broke away to form the Resistance. c. Quote: “I would rather be a monster that believes in something, that would sacrifice everything to make the galaxy better, than be someone who sits on the sidelines and watches as if it has no consequences to them." d. Strengths: __________ & __________ 2. Chirrut a. Film: Rogue One b. Moment: Chirrut volunteers himself as one of the rogue Rebels to help steal the Death Star plans. A master switch needed to be flipped, so he stepped out into the open, while praying his Force chant. He was able to make it to the switch, before being killed in an explosion. c. Quote: “I am one with the Force.” d. Strengths: __________ & __________ 3. Darth Vader a. Film: Return of the Jedi b. Moment: Star Wars’ original baddie, Darth Vader, has an amazing redemption story. After refusing to kill Vader, as Palpatine orders, Palpatine uses Force lightning on Luke. Vader kills Palpatine to save Luke, but Vader is now mortally wounded. In his final moments, he admits to still having some good in him. c. Quote: “Just for once let me look on you with my own eyes. You were right. You were right about me. Tell your sister you were right.” d. Strengths: __________ & __________ 4. The Mandalorian a. TV Show: The Mandalorian b. Moment: After Mando returns to bring “The Child” to safety from the Empire and bounty hunters, the Mandalorians come out of hiding to protect their brethren, even knowing that it could endanger their existence. c. Quote: “Our secrecy is our survival. Our survival is our strength.” d. Strengths: __________ & __________ .

Sean Guynes-Vishniac After the release of Revenge of the Sith (Lucas US 2005), the third film in the Star Wars prequel trilogy in 2005, George Lucas and Lucasfilm had no plans to add further feature films to the multi-billion-dollar franchise. This was in part because fans of the original Star Wars trilogy (1977–83) hated the prequels, and because Lucas was now interested in television, starting with the animated series The Clone Wars (2008–14, 2019). When Disney bought Lucasfilm, they announced a new trilogy extending the saga of the Skywalker family, and several standalone non-saga ‘anthology’ films to fill narrative gaps in the universe; Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first of these anthology films. Its position raises important questions about the contemporary state of the transmedia sf franchise, while its narrative looks at the limits and possibilities of sf blockbusters’ political work. To provide an easy entry into the franchise’s storyworld, Rogue One offers a cast of new characters that fit (and slightly modify) well-known franchise types: protagonist Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), for example, pairs the scruffiness of Han Solo with the paternal drama of Luke Skywalker; Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen) takes on the Jedi mystique and mentor role of Obi-Wan Kenobi; K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) is the non-human, comedy-relief sidekick, a cynical update of C-3PO. Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), however, stands out thematically, mixing the scoundrel qualities of Solo with the risky charm of Lando Calrissian, and bringing a moral ambiguity to the normally black-and-white world of Jedi and Sith; perhaps these qualities have led to Andor’s being named as the protagonist of one of the upcoming Star Wars series on the new streaming service Disney+.

The city is stacked upon hundreds of levels, each one becoming more dangerous as you descend. Despite the crime that occurs below the surface, Coruscant is probably the safest place in the entire galaxy. Dantooine: A peaceful farming planet, and home to secret Jedi enclave. Much of Dantooine is still uninhabited, and there are dozens of Force sensitive ruins spread out across the planet. Pretty much the only threats on Dantooine are the raiders, the wild animals, and the occasional fallen Jedi. Korriban: The ancient homeworld of the Sith, this planet is deeply entrenched in the dark-side of the Force. Korriban is one big wasteland with only a single small settlement. The Exchange has a small presence on the planet, and the old Sith tombs currently lie undisturbed. Manaan: The entire surface of the planet is one big ocean, and the only terrestrial settlement is the massive artificial island know as Ahto city. Manaan is the Selkath homeworld, and the galaxies sole provider of Kolto, a powerful healing substance. The planet is neutral, but maintains an alliance with the Republic. Telos IV: Telos is a major Republic world, and the headquarters of the Jedi Agricultural Corps. The diverse and fertile environment supports planet wide farming, and both the Republic military and Telos Security Force provide protection for the planet. Onderon: Onderon and It’s moon were some of the most heavily occupied planets during the Mandalorian wars, and despite being liberated by the Republic, some of the people of Onderon have developed a new distaste for both the Mandalorians and the Republic.

Fandom Edits Rogue One and the New Star Wars Gerry Canavan For the first 35 years of its existence, the Star Wars franchise was branded as the inspired vision of a single auteur-genius, George Lucas, who controlled the franchise both creatively and economically. Among its major competi- tors in science fiction and fantasy, perhaps only Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings has been so closely identified with the mind of one person—and where Tolkien had his legendarium, the mythopoeic totality of the Middle- earth narrative, Lucas had his saga. In interviews, Lucas typically spoke of the Star Wars saga as a unitary megatext from which the first movie just happened to draw somewhere in the middle.1 Lucas’s self-conscious promotion of Star Wars as a modern myth—intensified by his frequent references to Joseph Campbell’s study of mythic narrative, The Hero with a Thousand Faces—presented the narrative as emerging from a coherent “master plan” Lucas developed in the 1970s and that has slowly unfurled ever since. Borrowing from Foucault the concept of the episteme—that “strategic apparatus” within a discourse that allows “a field of scientificity” to determine what is thinkable and unthinkable within that system2—we might say that Star Wars had, until recently, treated Lucas’s authorial vi- sion as the “one episteme that defines the conditions of possibility of all knowledge.”3 In this chapter, I discuss Rogue One in the context of the 2012 sale of the Star Wars franchise to Disney, which functions as a moment of epistemic break for the Star Wars franchise.
