St. Petronille Parish Third Sunday of Easter Congratulations on 60 Years in the Priesthood, Fr. John Sullivan!

Today at the 11:30am Mass, we will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Fr. John Sullivan’s ordination to the priesthood on May 1, 1954. Following the 11:30am Mass, please join the St. Petronille community and Fr. John’s family in celebration at a reception in the Parish Life Center. Fr. John Sullivan has deep roots in the St. Petronille Community. When he was six years old, Fr. John moved to Glen Ellyn, only a few blocks from St. Petronille, with his parents and siblings. Fr. John, the oldest of six Sullivan children, was educated at St. Petronille School. He attended High School in Elmhurst for two years before entering Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago for three years, and eventually St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein for seven years. After his ordination, Fr. John was assigned to the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet. Subsequent assignments were to Assumption Parish in Coal City and St. John’s Parish in Winfield before being assigned as Pastor to St. Luke’s in Carol Stream in 1963. In 1969, Fr. John was assigned Pastor of Notre Dame in Clarendon Hills. Later assignments included Associate Pastorships at St. in Kankakee and St. Peter the Apostle in Itasca before returning to St. John’s Parish in Winfield and then Immaculate Conception Parish in Elmhurst. Fr. John Sullivan retired in 2003 to his home parish of St. Petronille, where we are thankful that he continues to serve the community our faith community in his retirement. Fr. John currently serves as the Chaplain for our local chapter of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas at St. Petronille, and he has served as Chaplain at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove in the past. In addition, he served on the Diocesan Pastoral Council, to which he was appointed by Bishop Peter Sartain and completed his term under Bishop Daniel Conlon. As described by The Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle, which honored Fr. John Sullivan as one of “Christ’s Heroes” at their annual banquet in 2013, Fr. John is “Quiet in speech, humble in manner, gentle in disposition.” Fr. John has devoted his life to spreading the love of Christ through word and action. In his own words, “We’re of Jesus Christ, always committed to Jesus’s Words… Priesthood is a gift from God that we’re required to share.” Certainly, Fr. John has spent his lifetime serving God, embodying the love that Jesus Christ has for all of us, and sharing that love with all whom he comes in contact.

Come and congratulate Fr. John for his many years of commitment to our Lord and service to God’s people.

St. Petronille Parish Third Sunday of Easter Lyn Schmidt St. Petronille Woman of the Year 2014

St. Petronille’s 2014 Woman of the year is Lyn Schmidt. Lyn grew up in Cicero with her brother and parents. She grew up a self-proclaimed tomboy, who loved playing basketball and baseball. Faith has always been an important part of Lyn’s upbringing, with THREE great uncles who were priests. Her childhood parish was St. Francis of Rome, where she founded a teen group and became a Eucharistic Minister at age 17. Lyn says she always felt blessed growing up that her parents worked hard to provide a Catholic education, even when money was tight. Lyn graduated from Northern Illinois University with a nursing degree, as well as a group of life- long friends whom she sees regularly. Lyn met her husband Mike, a physician, when they both worked at Loyola. In 2002, Lyn and Mike moved to Glen Ellyn, where they currently reside with their three children, Alexandra, Connor and Jess, as well as their dog, Ozzie. All three of Lyn’s children attend St. Petronille School, which Lyn “adores.” Lyn’s list of volunteer activities within St. Petronille parish and school and greater Glen Ellyn Community is truly outstanding and indicative of her generous and energetic spirit. At the parish, she has led the Women’s Retreat the past two years, is a small group leader for Stringing Pearls Bible Study, Worship Committee Member and Eucharistic Minister. Lyn serves as the school nurse, volleyball and basketball coaches, and Daisies/Girl Scout Leader at St. Petronille School. She also is an active member of Glen Ellyn Infant Welfare Society, as well as an Upwards basketball coach. Lyn’s approach to every aspect of her life embodies the essence of what it means to be a Catholic Woman in today’s world. She volunteers her time and talents with grace, integrity and a full, sincere heart. She lives passionately, prays fervently, and shares freely with the Parish, school, and greater Glen Ellyn community. Lyn brings so many parishioners along with her on her faith journey, deepening their faith and creating meaningful friendships. She cares for friends and family in beautiful ways, from bringing meals, to showing up in unexpected places with simple, yet strong support. One of Lyn’s friends said it best: “Talk about a bright light shining, who really walks the walk, Lyn is truly the best kind of ambassador for Christ.”

CCW would also like to congratulate all the nominees for 2014 Woman of the Year award These are just a few of the many beautiful words said by those who nominated these deserving woman:

Marianne Elizabeth Graunke “Marianne deserves to be the St. Petronille Woman of the Year because of how she lives for others. She works part time at St. Petronille along with her full time , and does not hesitate to volunteer her time to the Church to make sure that every job is complete. She has an incredible patience and puts others before herself: rarely taking time for herself because she has to take care of her work or her family. Her personality is patient as a , kind, and considerate.”

Marcie Clark “Marcie served as Co-President of CCW for two years, ending in June 2013. During her time in this position, Marcie worked tirelessly to foster the growth and development of the group, help connect women to other parishioners in the church, and to show the love of God through volunteerism. Marcie is extremely active with the Parent Organization at St. Petronille School, in addition to being a small group leader for Stringing Pearls Ministry. Marcie is one of the most giving and gracious people I have met at St. Petronille.”
