What's a Social Dancer to Do in a Time of Social Isolation? By Steve Cavanaugh

During this time of the COVID19 pandemic, with the suspension of social gatherings, including dancing, how can a dancer maintain skills? How can we continue to feel that with others that is such a big part in our dances? In the article on the following pages, we'll present a few online resources that may be helpful. While nothing will be a substitute for our regular classes and dance socials, these online classes will help keep you active and let you enjoy the music and movement that we all enjoy so much. If you are reading this from your email, there are links you may click; otherwise, you can go to SSD's website and access this article from the newsletter page to use the links. Enjoy. Some of these events use the computer application/phone app called "Zoom". This is a free program you download from the web site: www.zoom.us. It has been used by businesses for face-to-face conference calls for years, and is now being used by dancers to reconnect from our homes. You can either click on the links below which will start the program and ask you to identify yourself (a first name is all that's needed) and join the meeting, or you can start the program and type in the meeting ID.

Line Dance Lessons While you won't be dancing in line if you're home alone, you can still learn line dances and enjoy them; since a partner isn't needed, this will give you a chance to keep moving. The premium site for online line dances is the new Virtual group on Facebook, which lists the dozens of online dance classes that have sprung up over the past few weeks. If you visit the page, click on the "Events" link on the left side of the screen on your computer (a phone view will be a bit different), and then click on the Calendar link to see what's going on each day. Even if you don't have a Facebook account, you can follow the links to individual pages to see the dances when they are live. Also, Facebook lessons that are live get saved, so you can go back and refresh your memory. https://www.facebook.com/groups/virtuallinedancing/events
