Day 1 Thursday 11th October

Most of the participants had afternoon/evening arrivals, with no delays and we headed towards our comfortable Lima overnight hotel. We had a brief meeting to discuss the promising itinerary we had ahead of us and retire to rest and get energized for the following days.

Day 2 Friday 12th October

This morning we had our early transfer on time and began the first part of the journey flying over the mighty Andes, we were very enthusiastic about the beginning of the Amazonian experience. We had a nice flight and once in Iquitos we were met by Muyuna Lodge staff, and were soon taken across this picturesque once rubber capital of the country. At the Muyuna offices we picked up our wellies to be ready to explore the rainforest! For the next 3 hrs we had a delightful trip, birding from the boat and saw some of the typical Amazonian river edge species, including Cocoi Heron, Great and Snowy Egret, Yellow headed and Black Caracara, Osprey, Large billed and Yellow billed Tern. Once in the Yanayacu creek we continued birding towards the lodge finding many new , and at the dock we were greeted with a welcoming drink and had an orientation talk.

Day 3 - 5 Saturday 13th - Monday 15th October

Over the course of the days at Muyuna we managed to explore the different habitats that are easy to access during this time of the year, including varzea (seasonally flooded rainforest), oxbow lakes, river islands, swamps, etc. We managed to enjoy very pleasant weather and saw a good array of typical and more special Amazonian birds including White throated Toucan, Black-fronted Nunbird, Cream colored Woodpecker, Red-bellied Macaws, many colorful tanagers, plenty Black-collared and Slate-colored Hawks, Amazonian White tailed Trogon, Scarlet-crowned Barbet, Blue cheek and White eared Jacamars, and many of the new world flycatchers. This year we managed the best views of both male and female Wattled Currasow, numbers are increasing, which is motivating and notable. The finding of Rusty fronted Nunlet and Rufous necked Puffbird had us all excited. Amongst the difficult we managed included the special and scarce Black tailed which displayed obligingly, as well as Plumbeous, White shouldered and Band tailed. The Cotingas put on a nice display and we were very pleased with Bare necked Fruit Crow (an odd feathered creature) and Purple throated Fruit Crow.

Northern Peru Tour Report

The astonishing male Wire tailed Manakin had us all excited, and the trio of fighting Amazonian Royal Flycatchers produced a similar feeling. Varzea Schiffornis and nesting Pink-throated Becards provided good views. The night birds were not vocally active but despite this we managed Great and Common Potoo, Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, Pauraque and an unexpected Striped Owl.

In the end we had a very productive Amazonian experience in this magical place. After our return to Iquitos we got checked-in at our comfortable hotel and took a break before meeting again for a nice meal and reviewing the plan for the upcoming day.

Day 6 Tuesday 16th October

Today we had the customary early start and were pick-up by local guide and driver, which provided the opportunity to explore the “white sand forest” of Allpahuayo Mishana reserve, one of the most fascinating and enigmatic of Amazonian forests. After a field breakfast we were ready and started the trails to find Mouse colored Antshrike, Wedge-billed Woodcreeper, Ancient Antwren (hard but not impossible!), Yellow browed Antbird, and the most elusive one; Allpahuayo Antbird (heard only). Diversity is always greatly appreciated but in the poor soils of this location densities are particularly low, as a result it is quality and not quantity and every find makes for a great achievement. A few of our specials included; Brown-banded and Swallow wing Puffbirds, Scaly breasted Woodpecker, the discrete and canopy-loving Paradise Jacamar, Blue Dacnis and both Short billed and Purple Honeycreepers. Just as the day got hot and bird activity quieted down, we had time to refresh in the hotel, have a nice lunch and soon after were transferred to Iquitos Airport for our short domestic flight to Tarapoto, our next destination.

Day 7 Wednesday 17th October

Today we encountered rain…in the so called “dry forest” of the Huallaga drainage! First we decided to give a try to quebrada Upaquiua but the weather had different plans, so we turned around to visit Juan Guerra. These two sites are conveniently located, and we found a pair of unexpected and very close Sand-colored Nighthawks, White banded Swallows, and Hoatzins. Ahead we worked hard for a pair of White browed Antbirds but the rain didn´t help, however on the opposite side of the road was the scarce Planalto Hermit. Further on we found a soaring Hook billed Kite. Along the river we could spot Grayish Saltator, Inca and Violaceous Jays, Red capped Cardinal, Straight billed Woodcreeper, and Speckled Chachalaca. The morning had its good birds and now it was time to get back to the lodge for lunch and to pack. After a nice meal we had our check-out and promptly headed for Cerro La Escalera protected forest.

As the afternoon was nicer with regards to weather we decided to stop at the lower premises, where we had good views of White tipped Swifts together with White and Chestnut-collared Swifts circling the skies next to the impressive waterfall. Further up and past the tunnel, we found several fruiting trees that had a very bright and smart set of birds including; Silver beaked, Masked, Bay headed, White shouldered, Carmiols Tanager, and at the same trees also came Black faced Dacnis, Gilded Barbet, Purple throated Euphonia and Green Honeycreeper!. At higher ground we found the habitual Cliff Flycatcher overlooking the steep hillsides. As the sun went down we went to our next lodge, but before that we had a very rewarding stop at a stake out roost site of the mysterious Oilbird, the only strictly nocturnal frugivorous bird in the world! At nighttime we check-in at Puerto Mirador in Moyobamba for nice meal and a good night’s sleep.

Day 8 Thursday 18th October

We started another good day with an early breakfast and soon after departed to the nearby Wakanqui orchid and bird reserve. We were greeted by a bright male Huallaga Tanager (also known as Black-bellied), and some others such as Rufous-fronted Thornbird, Black-billed Thrush, and Yellow-browed Sparrow. As the morning progressed we birded the forest trail of Quebrada Mishkiyaquillo, where we were lucky at finding Scarlet breasted Fruiteater, Elegant Woodcreeper, Wing barred Piprites, and the scarce Black and white Tody Flycatcher, amongst the most common ones. At the hummingbird feeders we easily had Great billed and Black throated Hermits, Grey breasted Sabrewing, White necked Jacobin, Fork tailed Woodnymph and the ubiquitous Glittering throated Emerald, but without doubt the most eccentric of them all was the superb male Rufous crested Coquette. Some nice and colorful tanagers were found overhead feeding in fruiting trees, among these were Paradise, Blue necked, Bay headed, Spotted, and Golden. Later we found ourselves enjoying lunch in the field contemplating the majesty of the eastern foothills by the Aguas Verdes River.

The afternoon had us stopping at several places and enjoyed some new tanagers including Saffron crowned, Metallic green, Silver backed, Flame faced, and the aptly name Beryl spangled Tanager, to name a few. A little bit ahead we had a nice Rufous tailed Tyrant in the rock face across the road. We approached the famous Abra Patricia Pass and arrived at Owlet Lodge with still enough good light to watch a nice set of yet more new hummingbirds; Speckled Hummingbird, Fawn breasted Brilliant, Collared and Bronzy Incas, Chestnut breasted Coronet, Emerald bellied Puffleg, and the well dressed Long-tailed Sylph.

Days 9 - 10 Friday 19th - Saturday 20th October

The following days were spent having a quality time birding one of the most impressive and biodiverse regions of northern Peru, the famous Owlet Lodge grounds and surroundings, including the east slope gradient to Aguas Verdes and the must do Huembo Reserve, home of one of the most beautiful hummingbird species in the world: the Marvellous Spatuletail. There was a nice show of colourful birds including the special Yellow scarfed Tanager, Blue and Black, Orange eared, Turquoise, Green and gold, Magpie, and Golden eared Tanagers. After some hard work the humble Royal Sunangel allowed nice views, and as a bonus came a set of special birds found at lower elevations including Lanceolated Monklet, Versicolored Barbet (a stunning male), Emerald Toucanet, White eared Solitaire, and Andean Cock of the Rock displaying raucously at a lekking territory. On the way we picked up Black throated Tody Tyrant, and a nice pair of Lulu´s (Johnson's) Tody Tyrant. We could hear Chestnut Antpitta but they weren´t giving up, in the end we had better luck with Pearled Treerunner, Green and black Fruiteater, Strong billed Woodcreeper, White capped Tanager, White collared Jay, Grass green Tanager, Cinnamon Flycatcher, Yellow billed Cacique, Russet crowned Warbler and the commonly overlooked Mottle cheeked Tyrannulet. The day came to make a special effort to find, observe and enjoy one of the stars of the trip, and so we headed to the Interpretative Center of the Marvelous Spatuletail. Once on the site we were greeted with the excellent news that two full adult males were showing around a patch of hummingbird feeders by the dry creek! After enjoying Andean Emerald, Sparkling Violetear, Violet fronted Brilliant, White-bellied and Little Woodstar, Purple throated Sunangel, and White-bellied Hummingbird, we soon were captivated by the grandeur of the Marvelous Spatuletail, surely one of the most outstanding species of all hummingbirds! …we simply couldn’t leave, it seem to put a spell on our minds and we all continuously agreed to stay for one more look! …we then drove to our nearby hotel and after a good meal rested for the night.

Day 11 Sunday 21st October

Soon after breakfast we were out and birding the edge of the nearby Pomacochas Lake where we enjoyed good looks of Plumbeous Rail, Black crowned Night Heron, Andean Gull, Common Gallinule, Andean Lapwing, nice views of Puna Snipe, and a few other more common species. We then descended to the Utcubamba watershed and giving that the valley is parallel to the Marañon River, a fairly good number of the middle Marañon endemics were on our scope for the day. With a well-appointed stop we found Peruvian (Marañon) Pigeon, several Marañon Streak Saltator, a skulking pair of Marañon Wrens, and many Marañon Thrushes.

Today we also visited the impressive legacy of the pre-incan Chachapoyan´s, which lived in the surroundings of this valley and worked intensively in building Kuelap Fortress. This extraordinary archaeological site was our cultural target for the day. Once we accessed the middle Utcubamba we started on a long and windy road. Once in Kuelap we stopped to enjoyed lunch and found a beautiful view of the mighty Andes. At the site itself we enjoyed the extraordinary ruins (considered by some archeologists as equally majestic as the famous Machu Picchu), and did a little more birding, adding Rainbow Starfrontlet, Sword billed Hummingbird, Crimson mantled Woodpecker, Tufted Tit Tyrant, Streaked Tuftedcheek, Black throated Flowerpiercer and the distinct grey-morph of Superciliared Hemispingus (perhaps a future split?). Later in the afternoon we headed down to the pleasant country side accommodation we had for the night, El Chillo, where we enjoyed a tasty dinner before resuming to rest.

Day 12 Monday 22nd October

We had the fortune today to wake up at our birding site, so after enjoying a plentiful breakfast we were soon out in the nice gardens of Chillo, bordering the Utcubamba River, where we were delighted with such birds as Golden rumped Euphonia, White tipped Dove, Black and White Seedeater, the endemic Black necked Woodpecker, and other regional endemics such as Spot throated Hummingbird, Buff bellied Tanager, Marañon Thrush and Gnatcatcher, and more widespread gaudy ones like Chestnut crowned Antpitta, Blue and Yellow Tanager, an unexpected and highly welcomed Giant Hummingbird, and the fast moving Line cheeked/Barons Spinetail. But before getting ready to do the packing, we went and spotted two individuals of the Peruvian endemic and little known Koepcke´s Screech Owl at a roost site.

Later we drove to Jaén in good time, had our check-in, lunch, and then resumed birding. The afternoon was hot and we had planned to bird in the outskirts of town. We found and birded around a nearby semi forested road, with good birds such as Scarlet fronted Parakeet, Marañon Crescentchest, Mouse colored Tyrannulet, Tawny crowned Pygmy Tyrant, Brown crested Flycatcher (a very localized bird in Perú), Inca Jay, Rufous browed Peppershrike ( still pending on this taxon), Purple throated Euphonia, Red crested Finch and Golden bellied Grosbeak. Later in the afternoon we visited an area with rice paddies and with the help of some local kids managed to flush Blackish Rail, and found Yellow tailed Oriole happily singing at the end of the day.

Day 13 Tuesday 23rd October

We started the day while it was still dark, parked our vehicle and walked the remaining stretch to the reserve. En route we managed two night birds; Anthonys`Nightjar and Common Nighthawk. Once in the reserve we arranged breakfast while the dawn chorus progressed.

Northern Peru Tour Report

As soon as we were ready we proceeded to the tinamou hide, we heard several Tataupas very close but they were not giving in this morning. We than continued onwards to the trails where we located regional endemics like Croaking Ground Dove, Pacific Parrotlet, Marañon Slaty Antshrike, shumbae race of the Collared Antshrike and lots of others, like a pair of Squirrel Cuckoos, Drab and Chestnut throated Seedeater, a very wary Little Inca Finch, and many of the flashy Red crested Finches.

Back in the hotel we had time to arrange bags and after organising our luggage we enjoyed lunch and then had a transfer afternoon drive with a convenient stop to bird at Porculla. This approach provided good results in the shape of Fasciated Wren, White winged Brush Finch, Purple collared Woodstar, Band tailed Pigeon, Green tailed Trainbearer, Chiguango Thrush, Black cowled Saltator, Gray and gold and Three banded Warbler, and the attractive Ash breasted Sierra Finch. Later we continued to Tucume in time for a nice welcoming dinner cooked in a warm family environment, which set us up for a well deserved good night’s sleep.

Day 14 Wednesday 24th October

We started our birding right in the grounds of our lodge, a pre-breakfast stroll allowed nice views of the notable Tucume Pyramids, and in the outskirts the dry forest facilitated access to some Tumbesian endemics such as West Peruvian Dove, Bairds Flycatcher, White-faced Gnatcatcher (split from Tropical), Tumbesian Tyrannulet (split from Mouse coulored), Pacific Hornero, Pacific Parrotlet, as well as other more widespread but equally welcome gaudy birds like Cinereous Conebill, Scarlet backed Woodpecker, and a nice pair of Burrowing Owls that had claimed the remains of the pyramids as home! Amongst a group of Blue and White Swallows we also detected the scarce Tumbes Swallow.

After a welcome feast with freshly baked bread and nice coffee, we then headed to Lambayeque, to visit the Lord of Sipán Museum. Once in this extraordinary museum we were delighted to learn about the Moche culture, one of the many little known pre-Incan tribes that inhabited South America. We were extremely impressed by the high level of organization and the superior work in the metallurgic ornaments, including birds as icons of good luck.

Later we continued onwards to Chaparrí, where we had a welcoming lunch and by the time we were finished we were shown our cabins and arranged a time to meet for the afternoon session. Chaparrí is always a beautiful peaceful place to visit, its remoteness and comfortable arrangements together with its superb dry forest and quality tumbesian scrub makes this place a must for all nature enthusiasts. The afternoon walk provided good results, soon we were enjoying up close views of the Critically Endangered White winged Guan, the gaudy and noisy White tailed Jay put on quite a show, Long tailed Mockingbird, and on the way we also found Golden olive Woodpecker, Fasciated and the happily singing Superciliated Wren. Further ahead we were lucky with Elegant Crescentchest. The afternoon finished while enjoying the superb views of the mighty Chaparri Mountain.

Day 15 Thursday 25th October

The beginning of the day was quite remarkable; while enjoying a nice cup of coffee we were lucky with a show of many nearby Purple-collared Woodstars, a fast Short-tailed Woodstar, Several Amazilia and Tumbes Hummingbirds, all having a bath in the creek nearby.

Northern Peru Tour Report

After breakfast we headed to the trails and had most of the regional endemics including Tumbes Sparrow, Tumbes Tyrant, Collared Antshrike, Tumbes Pewee, Grey and white Tyrannulet, White-tailed Jay, White-edge Oriole, Parrot-billed Seedeater, and Collared Warbling Finch.

After another tasty lunch we relaxed and took photos by the dining area while waiting for the afternoon to cool down enough to go out birding again. The time came and we were off in the tinamou quest, this time we didn´t succeed but had time to enjoy good looks of some of the birds we have encountered earlier on, and added White headed Brush Finch, Peruvian Meadowlark, Plumbeous backed Thrush, Bran colored Flycatcher and Pacific Pygmy Owl. Night time came and we had the fortune to score great views of a very close West Peruvian Screech Owl with the aid of the spotlight.

Day 16 Friday 26th October

Giving our previous day’s results, we decided to leave Chaparrí early as we had a busy birding itinerary planned for the day and on the way out were lucky to find numerous flocks of the highly restricted Sulphur-throated Finch, a pair of the unique Cinereous Finch and a single Short tailed Field Tyrant. Next was the key stop for the “impossible” birds, and within a few minutes we had both Spotted Rail and Least Bittern in full view! At our first stop at the Tinajones Reservoir we found Pied billed and Great Grebe, Cocoi Heron, Puna Ibis, White-cheeked Pintails, and distant but plentiful Comb Ducks. At the waters edge were Black necked Stilts, and soaring soon appeared Savanna Hawk, Osprey, and Crested Caracara. Our next stop was Pomac, and after admiring the millenary Prosopis tree we ventured into the dry forest and with enough work we were lucky to find two more Peruvian endemics; Peruvian Plantcutter and Rufous Flycatcher, in close company with a pair of the hectic Necklaced Spinetail.

Everything went well with the morning birding and a strategic stop to have sea food for lunch made it even better, it turned out to be a feast of many sorts, some even had to reject dessert!. In the afternoon we went to look for birds along the coast, and south of Pimentel we found a good variety of the typical Humboldt Current seabirds including Peruvian Pelican, Peruvian Booby, Grey headed, Belchers and Kelp Gulls, a nice combo of plovers; Semipalmated, Grey and the Killdeer, Whimbrel, the gaudy Many coloured Rush Tyrant, and Ruddy Turnstone. We then returned to town to the Hotel Grand Chiclayo, and later went out for a farewell dinner to celebrate the success of our birding journey from the Amazon to the Pacific with yet another feast and some local drinks.

Day 17 Saturday 27th October

On the last day we had breakfast at a rather unusual “civilized” time and then headed to the airport for our domestic flight to Lima. Once in Lima airport we were transferred to a nearby hotel to drop bags and immediately after headed to Pantanos de Villa. The birding was very good and we added a number of species like Red legged Cormorant, Cinnamon Teal, American Oystercatcher, Greater Yellowlegs, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Wilson´s Phalarope, Grey, Laughing and Franklins Gull, and Elegant Tern. Later we drove to the green-district of the capital and had a hefty and elegant lunch at the off-shore restaurant Rosa Nautica, where we were surrounded by hundreds of the smart looking Inca Tern. We then drove to the hotel, and after having refreshed headed to the airport to be there on time for the departures to Europe.
