Evergreen’s global reach

ince its establishment by Evergreen Group Chairman Dr. Yung-fa Chang on Sept. 1, S 1968, during the blossoming of the “con- tainer revolution,” Evergreen Marine Corp. has grown into one of the world’s largest container shipping companies. The company’s service network spans the globe, connecting all six continents in a vast service network. EMC’s global transportation network covers more than 80 countries with more than 240 service locations around the world. The fleet operated by EMC is some 150 vessels with a total capacity of 440,000 TEUs. The company’s extensive ocean service is enhanced by intermodal capability to every continent and also the flexibility of a modern, specially built fleet that adheres to the goal of safe, secure, just-in-time delivery. The main business scope of Evergreen includes international liner transportation serv- ices, shipping agencies and vessel repairs, in addition to container terminal operations and seafarer training. Its ships sailed throughout the continents of Asia, Europe and the Americas. This move established Evergreen as second-to-none in the provision of economi- cal and convenient transportation services for global industries. Management discipline Besides the ready availability of talent, a company has to have a strong management system to ensure progress. A business can safely count on the leadership of its founders in the initial years, but long-term, sustainable growth is only possible if it has a formal organizational structure and a sound management system from an early stage. My guiding principle when I set out to draft the management rules was that the system remain current and relevant at all times. Where change to the system or in the manner of its execution is due, it must be effected promptly so that the company does not lose track of the mission the system was originally designed to accomplish. Rules are, after all, laid down by people for people, so that employees are aware of their personal as well as collective responsibilities. But if rules are applied inflexibly or dogmatical- ly, they soon become a burden to workers, and a source of resentment, thus stifling the compa- ny’s progress. In 1975, Y.F.
