Retired Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland Roger W. Gries opened the ceremony. In a special prayer, he said, “May almighty God bless this field. Bless all who will be participating in any sport or activity on this field, so that enriched and strengthened by the gift of this field, to Holy Name High School, the Green Wave may continue to prosper and continue to flow to victory.” President Terrence Kenneally ’67 then wel- comed Cicerchi to reflect on why it was impor- tant to him to support the project, and make the turf field a reality. “I did this because ‘character intangibles’ were either first experienced or uniquely reinforced during my football days at Holy Name,” said Cicerchi. “They became a part of me, even to this day, and are foundational to all of my success as a husband, father, business- man and Christian. Drum line members provided musical entertainment before and after the dedication, while Giovanna Layne ’21 lent her beautiful voice to sing the National Anthem and alma mater. Varsity and JV football cheerleaders led the crowd in a “We are HN” chant, and student-athletes from the football, girls soccer, volleyball and cross country teams were all represented. “Take a look at this field and what we have “I did this because ‘character intangibles’ were either accomplished in two years. Holy Name Takes On Ireland by Cecelia Johanni ’18 Editor in Chief of The Name and 2017 Ireland Trip Student Traveler uring the 2016-2017 school year, Holy Name announced that a June 2017 trip to Ireland was being planned. Many HN students and Dcommunity members were interested in this travel opportunity. Ultimately, 13 students, as well as four faculty and staff members, made the journey to the Emerald Isle. Students had varying reasons for attending this 10-day excursion. Many came along due to family ties, like Erin Roche ’17, who said, “My entire family has been there and I really wanted to be able to be a part of the conversation.” Lizzie Groth ’17 said, “I wanted Holy Name on Achill Island to gain life experiences that I could use while writing.” No matter what motivated students to attend, all agreed that the trip was truly an enjoyable learning experience. The first stop of the tour was the vibrant city of Dublin, a historical city that retains a youthful and energetic vibe. This stop included visits to historical sites, such as Glasnevin Cemetery, the Book of Kells, Temple Bar and Grafton Street. Next, the group headed to Belfast to learn Bradley Faur ’18, Kyle Dewey ’18, Cecelia Johanni ’18, Carlton Wright ’19 about tense times in Irish history. Erin said, “I enjoyed the history the most and learning about the politics between the north and south.” On the road to Derry, students and chaperones experienced the beautiful coastal areas of Ireland by stopping at a rope bridge, Giant’s Causeway and Carrickfergus Castle. Following a night in Derry and a visit to the Our Lady of Knock Shrine, the group arrived on Achill Island. On Students at Croagh Patrick Achill, students were able to try traditional Irish Surfing at Keel Beech on Achill Island in County Mayo, Ireland food, surf on Keel Beach and learn about the diverse sea life surrounding the island. Lizzie added, “Travel can fully immerse you into the rich histories of other nations.” Students and chaperones alike left Ireland with a new sense of adventure and a yearning to someday return. ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Emily Day ’08 mily Day ’08 is a successful business- woman, currently working as a senior financial analyst in the revenue cycle department at the Cleveland Clinic. EAlthough her skills are invaluable at work, Day is making an even bigger difference away from the office, specifically among those living in Honduras. This past May, she went on her fifth mission/ immersion trip, joining her collegiate alma mater, John Carroll University, on a medical immersion trip to Honduras. Partnered with a local Honduran organization called Sociedad Amigos de Los Niños (Friends of Honduran Children), Day and others from JCU provided medical care to those in rural communities who would not have access to healthcare otherwise. Due to her Spanish education at Holy Name and JCU, Day’s primary role was translating in the intake area to document patients’ medical history, and translating treatment plans to patients who were given medication. Below is a reflection from Day on her experiences in Honduras, and how her time at Holy Name and JCU helped her to understand why it is important to help those in need all over the world.
