Tales of Mystery and Adventure to take over the Peristyle, Toledo Museum of Art galleries Oct. 25-27 Activities include after-hours flashlight tours and film screenings of Nosferatu, Black Panther and Coco TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) will host three film screenings in the Peristyle and after-hours flashlight tours this October as part of its Tales of Mystery and Adventure program. After-hours flashlight tours will take place Oct. 25-27. Explore the mysteries of the Museum on a one-hour tour through the Museum’s darkened galleries and secret spaces and places. Meet in the Little Theater for orientation 15 minutes prior to the start of the tour. Flashlight tours will take place Thursday, Oct. 25 and Friday, Oct. 26 at 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 27 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for Museum members, $20 for nonmembers and can be purchased at toledomuseum.org. On Thursday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m., the Museum will screen Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror (1922) as part of its Sound of Silents film and live music series. Nosferatu remains one of the most beautiful and haunting vampire films of all time. Based on Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, the film was almost destroyed following a lawsuit filed by the author’s widow. The film will be presented in the Peristyle with a live score by organist Stephen Warner. Tickets are $5 for Museum members, $7 for nonmembers and can be purchased at toledomuseum.org. A screening of the blockbuster film Black Panther (2018, 134 minutes, PG-13) will take place on Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Peristyle. Based on the created in 1966 by Stan Lee and , Black Panther is the story of T'Challa who, after the death of his father, returns home to the African nation of to take his rightful place as king. When a powerful enemy suddenly reappears, T'Challa's mettle as king – and as Black Panther – gets tested when he's drawn into a conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Tickets are $10 for Museum members, $15 for nonmembers and can be purchased at toledomuseum.org. The Art House Film Series is supported in part by Ann and Joseph Pilkington. Prior to the screening of Black Panther, Jonathan Gray, associate professor of English at John Jay College-City University of New York, will give a free presentation titled “Long Live the King: Black Panther and African Super Sovereignty.” Gray will examine the evolution of Black Panther's identity as a leader across the work of Don McGregor, Christopher Priest, Reginald Hudlin and Ta-Nehisi Coates, through consideration of the changing understanding of African nationhood based on shifting understandings of de-colonial, post-colonial and neo- liberal logics. This lecture will take place in the Little Theater at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26. It is a co-presentation of the Toledo Museum of Art and the University of Toledo Department of Theatre and Film. The Museum will also host a matinee showing of Coco (2017, 105 minutes, PG) on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. in the Peristyle. Despite his family's generations-old ban on music, young Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician. Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead where he has a chance encounter with a charming trickster named Héctor. The two then embark on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history. Tickets are $5 for Museum members, $7 for nonmembers and can purchased at toledomuseum.org. Families on Film is a collaboration of the Toledo Museum of Art and the University of Toledo Department of Theatre and Film.
