1 A MESSAGE FROM DR. CHRISTOPHER DOANE, Dean, School of Music

On behalf of the School of Music it is my pleasure to welcome you to the events of the UofL School of Music’s Jazz Fest. The School of Music recognizes all the faculty members of the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program, including Ansyn Banks, Chris Fitzgerald, Mike Hyman, Jerry Tolson, Mike Tracy, Craig Wagner, and Tyrone Wheeler, for their work in organizing and presenting a terrific set of events and concerts to bring jazz fans throughout the region to the University of Louisville. Additionally, I also would like to acknowledge the important support for this event from our staff of Graduate Assistants and all the students in Jazz Studies program. The 2016 Jazz Fest, now in its 24th year at UofL, provides a combination of concerts and master classes featuring established and emerging jazz artists and provides opportunities for audiences to experience the past, present, and future of jazz in the United States and around the world.

The school is especially pleased to welcome to the University of Louisville our special guest artists, Carl Allen, drummer and bandleader with the members of The Art of Elvin Jones, saxophonist Denis DiBlasio, and pianist/composer Ryan Cohan. Additionally, we thank our panel of adjudicators and clinicians, Jeff Sherman, David Kana, Marlin McKay, and Alyssa Mehnert who provide great service to the School of Music and Jazz Fest through their work with our students and the visiting high school jazz bands that make up such an important part of this event. In addition to the opportunity to showcase some of the finest jazz performers working today, these events are all about providing educational opportunities for students at UofL, community members, and jazz students throughout our region. So, to all who participate in this critically important part of the festival, please accept this acknowledgment and our thanks.

The School of Music and Jazz Studies program at UofL are proud to present Jazz Fest as part of the university’s diversity celebration and observance of African American History Month and as a major artistic event in celebration of the unique contribution of jazz to our musical culture.

38 Carl Allen and the Art of Elvin Jones

Carl Allen and The Art of Elvin is a tribute to and Elvin Jones and features music by both Art Blakey and Elvin Jones in addition to some original music. In the tradition of both Art and Elvin the music is hard bop, gospel infused, hard swinging music that is designed to make one feel good! With over 200 recordings to his credit, the gifted Milwaukee-born, New York- based drummer, sideman, bandleader, entrepreneur, and educator, Carl Allen’s profound and propulsive percolations have provided soulful and syncopated support for nearly three decades. Allen grew up on gospel, R&B, and funk, but later turned to jazz after hearing an LP by the legendary saxophonist Benny Carter. His first hometown gigs were with sax greats Sonny Stitt and James Moody. Allen joined trumpeter a year before his graduation, served as his Musical Director for eight years, and recorded several recordings with the trumpeter including Double Take and Life Flight. Allen also played with Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, , Jennifer Holliday, J.J. Johnson, Rickie Lee Jones, Sammy Davis Jr., Branford Marsalis, Kenny Garrett to name just few of the many! Carl Allen’s multifaceted career provides the perfect template for what a modern musician should be. As Sid Gribetz of Jazz Times wrote, “more than just another fine drummer, Carl Allen has it all together as a bandleader, businessman, and producer, becoming a force in today’s jazz world.” Allen maintains an exhaustive schedule of recording, touring and teaching. He remains active as a sideman with Christian McBride and Inside Straight, Benny Golson and others. As a leader he most recently leads The Carl Allen Quartet as well as The Art of Elvin, a tribute band dedicated to his two drum influences, Art Blakey and Elvin Jones was started after the passing of Elvin Jones in 2004.
