C. 27602 BOGGAN-HAMMOND HOUSE DEDICATED May 9 was the date of the dedication of the Boggan-Hammond House in Wadesboro and of the Cedar Creek Meeting House in Lilesville. The resto­ rations have been continuing projects of the Anson County Historical Society. Dr. H. G. Jones was the main speaker for the dedication ceremonies; Mr. Linn D. Garibaldi, president of the Anson group, welcomed dignitaries and guests. Taking part in the Lilesville program were the Reverend 0. M. Burck­ halter, pastor of the Lilesville Baptist Church (the congregation of which donated the meetinghouse to the society), Congressman A. Paul Kitchin, Lieutenant Governor H. Pat Taylor, Jr., and Representative Fred Mills. Par­ ticipants in the Wadesboro dedication, in addition to those mentioned above, were the Reverends Joseph Lash, Cherry Livingston, Ernest Page, James B. Sides, and H. Howard Smith. The oldest wing of the Boggan-Hammond House is thought to be the first house built in Wadesboro. Actually two houses, the original home was built by Captain Patrick Boggan in the late 1700s; the Alexander Little wing was built in the 1800s. The Boggan-H3mmond House was dedicated May 9; the Alexander Little wing is shown at the right.     CAJUNS, CREOLES, PIRATES AND PLANTERS Your New Louisiana Ancestors Format Volume 2, Number 33 By Damon Veach SLAVE REBELLION: The Greater New Orleans Louis A. Martinet Society, through its President-Elect, Sharrolyn Jackson Miles, is laying the groundwork for an important event. January 2011 will be the Bicentennial of what has been passed down as the German Coast Uprising or Slave Rebellion. This society and other local attorneys and supporters are interested in commemorating the events surrounding the historic 1811 slave uprising which took place at the German Coast which is now part of St. John and St. Charles parishes. The revolt began on January 8, 1811 and was led by Charles Deslondes, a free person of color working as a laborer on the Deslondes plantation. During the insurrection, approximately 200 slaves escaped from their plantations and joined the insurgents as they marched 20 miles downriver toward New Orleans. The rebellion was quashed a couple of days later when a militia of planters led by Colonel Manuel Andry attacked them at Destrehan Plantation. According to reports, 95 slaves were killed in the aftermath including 18 who were tried and executed at the Destrehan Plantation and 11 who were tried and executed in New Orleans. The slaves were executed by decapitation or hanging and the heads of some of the slaves were placed on stakes at plantations as a warning to others. This organization feels that it is very important that Louisianans take the time to remember this historic revolt which has been documented as the largest slave revolt in United States history.

S. Leon County attracted many cotton planters from Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, North and South Carolina in the 1820’s to the 1850’s. Up to the beginning of the Civil War, Leon County was the 5th largest producer of cotton counting all counties from Florida and Georgia. The Civil War brought the plantation culture to a standstill. The plantations transformed the environment based on their need for open fields in which to cultivate different crops, or raise a variety of animals with the help of slaves. From the 1900’s many plantations abandoned their land to nature producing a deep change in the local landscape. Today plantations are not used as much for planting crops but more for hunting or as tree farms. The hunting plantations do not grow crops but provide good conditions for the hunting of animals and birds. Other plantations were torn apart, sold and now are part of the Tallahassee urban fabric. In other words, they disappeared. The transformation of the plantations has been slow and steady, and has become the image of the area, even the region.
