Purpose - What’s the point? Closing the Gap!

• England does not provide enough athletes for senior international teams. • Not many ‘real’ options are for swimmers • Swimmers below ‘World Class’ the options are extremely limited. • We are losing athletes to the US collegiate system • Ultimately we must be losing swimmers from the sport • A natural time for swimmers to look for new opportunities • Help transition more swimmers into International senior swimmers Swim England would like

• Flexible study programmes • Excellent training provision for both pool and non-pool based training • Support services to include Strength and conditioning, Sports Science, psychology, lifestyle and physiotherapy. • Housing and pastoral care in close proximity to facilities and education sites. • Appropriate scholarship incentives Culture • Athlete centred, Coach led and Programme supported • Wave power and Swim Mark accredited • Coaching philosophies based around British 5 pillars • Delivering Results • Setting Direction • Staying Connected • Engaging People • Credibility • Swim England values of Quality, Purpose, Togetherness, Fun • Sport England Talent guidelines ‘Training to win and enjoying the experience are not mutually exclusive’ Principles

's National Centres – Application process – BS Website • Discussions MUST happen between home coach / Swimmer / Parent / School about options • Engage with Performance centres at Winter and Summer Meets • Look at OTHER University / Swimming club partnerships in the UK ( & as well) • 2019 University deadlines - UCAS website • March (the year before University entry) - start planning to explore

• Identify the area they want to study and then identify Uni they may want to visit

• Book onto open days and/or contact the relevant Uni contacts to let them know you want to visit.

• Go to a few to compare and contrast. Remember to investigate: • the course and the options (full time/part time/distance learning/placement years) • the University location (campus/town/city; size; other things you may want to do whilst there) • the performance swim programme offer including pool/hours/coaches/programme/ SSSM support/performance and/or scholarship support • Between May (Year prior to entry) & January (year of entry) UCAS applications for most courses need to be submitted. Applicants can select up to 5. • Select 2 as your FIRM and INSURANCE choices by early May. • Finish your FE studies. • Get results. • Communicate these to your FIRM choice even if they are not what you had worked and hoped for.
