A look back begins in 2000 B.C., when Cherokee’s ancestors were hunters and gatherers, often sharing their beliefs through storytelling, ceremonies, and dance. They would soon develop a sophisticated culture, however. In fact, by the time the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto first encountered Cherokees in 1540 A.D., they already had an agricultural system and peaceful self-government. De Soto and his explorers came looking for gold, carrying with them diseases that devastated the Cherokee population. By the late eighteenth century, the Cherokees’ land was also under attack, leading to the tragedy known as the “Trail of Tears.” In 1830, US President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act, moving the Cherokees west in exchange for their homeland. The 1,200-mile journey led to more than 4,000 Cherokee deaths. Those who escaped and remained behind are the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians you know today. THESE HILLS, THIS TRAIL: CHEROKEE OUTDOOR HISTORICAL DRAMA AND THE POWER OF CHANGE/CHANGE OF POWER by CHARLES ADRON FARRIS III (Under the Direction of Marla Carlson and Jace Weaver) ABSTRACT This dissertation compares the historical development of the Cherokee Historical Association’s (CHA) Unto These Hills (1950) in Cherokee, North Carolina, and the Cherokee Heritage Center’s (CHC) The Trail of Tears (1968) in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Unto These Hills and The Trail of Tears were originally commissioned to commemorate the survivability of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and the Cherokee Nation (CN) in light of nineteenth- century Euramerican acts of deracination and transculturation. Kermit Hunter, a white southern American playwright, wrote both dramas to attract tourists to the locations of two of America’s greatest events. Hunter’s scripts are littered, however, with misleading historical narratives that tend to indulge Euramerican jingoistic sympathies rather than commemorate the Cherokees’ survivability. It wasn’t until 2006/1995 that the CHA in North Carolina and the CHC in Oklahoma proactively shelved Hunter’s dramas, replacing them with historically “accurate” and culturally sensitive versions. Since the initial shelving of Hunter’s scripts, Unto These Hills and The Trail of Tears have undergone substantial changes, almost on a yearly basis. Artists have worked to correct the romanticized notions of Cherokee-Euramerican history in the dramas, replacing problematic information with more accurate and culturally specific material. Such modification has been and continues to be a tricky endeavor: the process of improvement has triggered mixed reviews from touristic audiences and from within Cherokee communities themselves. -

Thompson Staging “the Drama”: The continuing importance of cultural tourism in the gaming era (Under the direction of Valerie Lambert, Michael Lambert, Patricia Sawin, Christopher Nelson, and John Jackson) Issues of indigenous self-representation are of major concern for U.S. tribal nations. For the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) self-representation has meant refashioning the way they are portrayed in a major theatrical production on their reservation. My dissertation investigates the reinvention of the outdoor drama Unto These Hills, produced 1950-2004 in Cherokee, North Carolina, by the White dominated Cherokee Historical Association (CHA) and the role of the EBCI in exerting tribal sovereignty over the formerly non-Indian controlled institutions which produce representations of their history and culture for tourists. In 2006, under Cherokee management, the fifty-seven year old drama was transformed into Unto These Hills… a Retelling. My research explores the social conflicts, negotiations, creative processes and performances surrounding this change as the tribe steered its most public representation of the past from a narrative of accommodation to one of Cherokee nationalism. -

We provide services to organizations who produce theatre in outdoor settings including historical dramas, Shakespeare festivals, religious dramas, and a rich variety of musicals and plays. Founded in 1963 in the United States, the IOD now welcomes member theatres from around the world. We serve four primary constituent groups: 1. Members who pay annual dues and participate in our conferences, auditions, public information and research projects 2. ABSTRACT MEROD, MARJORIE ELEANOR LOUISA . Public Memory, Authenticity, and the Frontier Legacy of Daniel Boone. (Under the direction of Craig Thompson Friend). The label “authentic” is incredibly powerful to representations of American heritage. Authenticity denotes verifiable (true) fact as well as legitimacy, lending authority to the objects it describes. Individuals’ notions of what constitutes authentic vary, however, given their own conceptualizations of what is real and true. In their interpretations of the eighteenth-century Appalachian frontier, playwright Kermit Hunter, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Boone Trail Highway and Memorial Association, and the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park sought to create authentic portrayals of the frontier in order to inform the public about America’s pioneer legacy, and each ultimately presented the public with a frontier reflective as much of American myth as of historical fact. In each case, these propagators of heritage demonstrated that, in the American mind, the frontier myth has become the “authentic” American frontier. In Kermit Hunter’s historical drama, Horn in the West, the playwright presented the heroic story of average American pioneers led westward by Daniel Boone during the American Revolution. Hunter stressed the pioneers’ values of family, faith, and success as “authentic.” The Daughters of the American Revolution and the Boone Trail Highway and Memorial Association set out in the 1910s and 1920s to mark the Wilderness Road, the westward route so closely associated to Daniel Boone. The Daughters of the American Revolution stressed the “authenticity” of specific places while the Boone Trail Highway and Memorial Association sought to recapture Boone’s “authentic” pioneering spirit. -

Nees All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Scott Magelssen, Advisor Since their emergence in the1950s and 1960s as popular summer tourist fare, outdoor historical dramas have featured Indian characters in dominant roles. While the non-native founders of these dramas have defended the use of these characters as a respectful tribute to Native American traditions and values, in many cases, the depictions have remained static over the years and continue to reflect problematic white constructions of the Indian “Other.” In some instances, such as in the cases of Unto These Hills and the Under the Cherokee Moon, Native Americans in the area surrounding the production site have instigated changes to the way their cultures are represented in these performances. This dissertation is a historical study that analyzes production and performance choices that engage representations of Native Americans in outdoor historical dramas—representations that have historically tended toward reinscriptions of unhelpful stereotypes. I analyze recent changes in these representations to explore how Native American cultures are currently portrayed. The dramas I examine include Trumpet in the Land, The White Savage, Tecumseh!, Blue Jacket, Unto These Hills, and Under the Cherokee Moon. My research calls upon interviews with production participants, close readings of the productions, archival materials, and secondary sources. -

This thesis will look at the historic memory of Tsali, how it has changed over time, and its significance by looking at some of the major tellings of Tsali’s story, and newspaper articles that offer prevalent versions of the story in their time. 2 On the night of July 1st, 1950 the Mountainside Theatre near Cherokee opened with a play that would in time become one of the most popular plays in Western North Carolina. That play was the Cherokee drama “Unto These Hills.” Directed by Harry Davis and written by Kermit Hunter, this play told a dramatized version of Cherokee Removal. “Unto These Hills” had a massive cast of over one-hundred actors, some of whom were Cherokee themselves, while many others were whites playing lead Cherokee roles, such as John Shearin in the role of the martyr Tsali. In the play, the Cherokee are tricked by the Federal Government into selling their lands for five-million dollars, and then forcibly removed from their ancestral home. -
