Not to scale. Artist Impression Only. *Tenure: Leasehold 999 years from 12 Oct 1885. MID autumn celebration is back at CSC @ Bukit Batok! A total of 512 members and their guests congregated in a razzle- dazzle ballroom of flowers and lanterns in the evening of Friday, 21 Sep 2012. A tantalising dinner buffet awaited participants at the entrance as students from Princess Elizabeth Primary School (PEPS) showcased their best talents onstage with graceful Chinese dance moves as well as melodies from the harmonica band and Chinese orchestra playing songs like 月亮代表我的心 that stirred the Mid Autumn spirit. The tempo of the event picked up when the audience kept to the edge of their seats during the adult pomelo-peeling competition and when eager children gathered in front of the stage for Izzy, a balloon sculptor cum juggler. Her swift hands turned mere balloons into a variety of shapes like flowers and octopus while her hilarity tickled everyone into uproarious laughter. Primary five students of PEPS were also given a chance to test their juniors with intellectually stimulating riddles on Mid Autumn. The evening climaxed with lanterns being distributed to all the children for a mass lantern parade. The ballroom was filled with a sea of red lanterns akin to a dragon snaking its way around CSC @ Bukit Batok. Upon their return, the audience was enthralled by a contortionist exhibiting flexible positions of splits and twists. Fion, a parent who sportingly took part in pomelo- peeling, felt this was a unique way of celebrating Mid Autumn with her two children who were students of PEPS. She credited the Club for the event’s great success and a wonderful experience.

8 Telematch winners MHA (Prisons) team with Guest-of-Honour, Mr Peter Ong in red T-shirt.

A buffet of exciting activities awaited 2800 participants who turned up at the Marina Barrage in the sun-soaked Saturday morning of 27 Oct 2012. It was jam-packed with entertainment including stilt walkers, caricature artists and jugglers for everyone. At 8am, a powerful trio led a lively mass warm- up onstage followed by a healthy lifestyle 5km walk to Marina Bay. Many Dragonboat champion for men - MHA (Police) people found the scenic walk refreshing as it passed through the newly completed (Bay South).

While families took part in kite-flying and a family amazing race, dragonboat teams were revved up and ready to race. As Guest-of-Honour Mr Peter Ong, Head of Civil Service and President, Civil Service Club sounded the horn; teams furiously rowed, pitting against each other. The drumbeats, boats and intense solidarity created a colourful spectacle by Marina Reservoir. Kudos goes to winners: MHA (Police) and MND in the men and women’s categories respectively! “It was a satisfying week Dragonboat champion for women - MND of intensive training filled with crunches and stamina-building drills” for dragonboaters like Ms Jackie Ng, captain of MHA team, who “urged the Club to organise more of such activities.”

Then, cheers were heard as teams from six different government agencies competed in a telematch. Participants were immersed in multi-legged painting, an over-the-wall contest and a match of flour blowing and puzzle solving; games that boosted teamwork and communication. The MHA (Prisons) team won amidst joyous cheers.

Throughout the event, participants were enraptured by a hilarious Moe Alkaff as the emcee through stage games that even made volunteers dance to ‘Gangnam Style’! Kids also enjoyed balloon wall climbing, an art contest and more. It was a perfect day of thrills, spills and wholesome fun that ended with a loud bang from music produced by samba drummers.

9 EXCITEMENT and horror filled CSC @ Bukit Batok where Halloween is celebrated in the eerie evening of Saturday, 20 Oct 2012. The heavy downpour did not stop ardent participants from turning up. Upon arrival, they were greeted by exotic cosplayers such as Iron Man, Orc War Chief, Mojo Jo Jo, Digimon Lady Devilmon, Tarzan and the Hulk from members of the Singapore Body Building & Fitness Federation!

Then enter the Haunted Trail: the highlight of the evening where only the courageous survived walking through a dark path filled with shocking creatures and spooks. An eerie, longhaired lady in a white dress floated around. Bloodcurdling screams filled the air that night, courtesy of the students from the Institute of Technical Education.

That’s not all. While daring adults get their adrenaline pumping, children enter a land of fun with craft and play! Children broke into laughter as they tried their hands in all sorts of craftwork such as in making adorable bats and miniclay pumpkins, balloon sculpting and face painting. It was an enjoyable Fantasy Halloween Night for everyone.

MHA Gurkhas Go For The Goal! ON 15 and 16 September 2012, 29 teams from 17 government agencies gathered at the St Wilfrid Field for the Public Service Football Tournament. After intense competition in the preliminary and knock-out rounds, the tournament culminated in an exciting contest between the Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA) Gurkha team and the Ministry of Education (MOE) team in the finals. MHA’s Gurkhas were resourceful, physically and mentally robust making them a strong contender in the football field while MOE was determined to MHA Gurkhas basking in their glory reclaim their championship title clinched two years ago. After locking horns for full time with no goals, the match went into a penalty shootout! MHA made little mistakes and eventually sealed their victorious fate. MOE’s passionate players believed that the effort to win is everything. Team convenor, Mr Abdul Nasir said that they had already gained mutual respect and ‘brothers’ in their football fraternity. The team will continue to train hard in the weekends. This is the 20th time Mr Nasir has joined CSC’s football events and “it will definitely not be his last.” He also thanked “CSC for holding MOE’s passionate footballers in second place such events that bring people together through sports.”

MOE’s Taste Of Triumph In Table Tennis

FROM 27 Aug to 21 Sep 2012 at the Club HDB, the Public Service Table Tennis Tournament saw 44 teams from 21 government agencies compete in the Men, Women, Men’s Senior and Men’s Active Agers categories. Competition was intense. The two months of training paid off for the Ministry of Education (MOE) team as they Joint first runner-up teams in Table Tennis: HDB (left) and MINDEF (right) defended the overall championship by topping the Women’s event, clinching second place in Men’s Senior and fourth place in Men’s Open categories. Lum Siew Chin, a member of MOE team and 12-year participant of CSC table tennis contests, dedicated their performance to excellent recruitment of ex-school and national table tennis players as well as the devotion of Yap Heong Meng, MOE convenor with a never-say-die attitude. Ms Lum is inspired by Jing Jun Hong, Singapore’s table tennis coach in the 2012 Olympic Games. As a PE teacher, Ms Lum knows it is no mean feat to coach Olympians to victory as Ms Jing also went through “this arduous path of MHA Gurkhas basking in their glory excellence in Sydney 2000 as an Olympian.” Mr Jerry Lim, CSC Executive Committee Member, presented prizes to the winning teams.

MOE Gets The Bowling Blue-ribbon PINS fell like dominos at the finals of Public Games Bowling Competition held at Westwood Bowl, CSC @ Bukit Batok on 27 and 29 Sep 2012. It wasn’t easy for bowlers from the Ministry of Education (MOE) to seal a victory as they had to compete with 213 teams from 29 organisations. MOE’s hardy bowlers soaking in victory! Competition was keen among power players. MOE topped the Women’s Category while Ministry of Home Affairs and Housing Development Board (HDB) won the Mixed and Active Agers categories respectively. It was a close overall win for MOE as it eventually edged out HDB by a point when it clinched the second and third places of Mixed Category. Team manager, Benedict Low, described the team as serious bowlers who often took part in other bowling games like Canon Super Series. They also trained intensively at Westwood Bowl to improve techniques. Convenor Lim Fong Yee said: “MOE’s hardy bowlers had to pass through stringent selection criteria and goals were set to meet high expectations.” The goals kept the players active. This attitude shows signs of a first class team with excellent team spirit.

MOE Outmanoeuvres Its Chess Competitors IT was a brain-busting Saturday for participants in the Public Service Chinese Chess Competition held on 18 Aug 2012 at Club CSC @ Tessensohn. Undaunted by its defeat to the Ministry of Health team last year, the Ministry of Education (MOE) team outplayed 16 other teams from 10 government agencies to clinch this year’s championship trophy. According to its captain, Mr Harry Lim, the MOE team was formed by coincidence. Its members had taken part in another contest at Boon Lay on their own. From the interaction, Mr Lim was inspired when he discovered that many of the participants were teachers. He convinced them to form the MOE team. The team is now a group of experienced Chinese chess players who needed no training prior to the competition. Mr Boo Han Ting, the MOE team’s vice-captain and Chinese language teacher, regularly plays the game online. As an advocate for Chinese chess, he was elated with the high level of competition this time and looked forward to competing with better Chinese chess competitors in the future. A glorious MOE team outwitting the rest in chess

MOE Netballers Knock Out Defending Champions NOTHING can stop the netballers from Ministry of Education (MOE) from taking the top two spots in the Public Service Mixed Netball Carnival held on Saturday, 15 Sep 2012 at the CCAB Sports Hall. MOE (10) gave a sensational performance, smashing 35 teams to secure first place! Comprising teachers in physical education, MOE (10) includes Gwi Kiat Hoon (team convenor), Jean Chia (team strategist) and Irene Heng (game tempo MOE (10) the “dictators” of the netball court controller) who are regular netballers. Ms Gwi felt her teammates played their respective roles flawlessly, even the men displayed “high shooting statistics” with no game violations. Ms Chia also recalled playing to the strengths of every member enabling these “dictators” of the court to be masters of the netball game. Ms Heng, a veteran participant for 12 years, took part because it was a 3-in-1 game of stimulations: physically, mentally and socially. Netball “is strongly
