Back to the Future Building on Tradition

“The Toledo Museum of Art didn’t just happen; it was caused,” is a frequent observation of Director Brian Kennedy. The identity and mission of today’s TMA has been shaped by the decisions, actions and contributions of many people over the Museum’s 110-year-history.

This report spotlights the progress of our Strategic Plan. The Museum’s vision for the future incorporates the best of our institution’s past—singular great works of art, art education, sustainability and free access for all—with new technologies and the use of historic resources in fresh ways.

As we look ahead to serving the needs of a new generation of art and Museum patrons, a nod to the past: Many of the photos you’ll see harken back to iconic images of children enjoying some of the memorable spaces at TMA.

34 Loans to other institutions The Toledo Museum of Art has a long history of building strong foundations. The first was laid in 1901, when seven Works of art added to the collection determined art lovers incorporated the Museum to bring 41 the elements of art and principles of design to the working people of the city. Just two years later, when director George 791 Volumes added to the library Stevens established a policy of welcoming children and began offering free art classes, he garnered the support of the community and set the cornerstone for the Museum’s Public programs 809 stellar art education program. By the time founder Edward Drummond Libbey offered a challenge grant of $50,000 if the residents of Toledo could raise the same amount—a princely sum in 1907— the nascent Museum’s solid footing with the people of the city was confirmed: the money was raised in just 20 days.

In 2011, TMA began laying building blocks for its next five years of art education, developing a Strategic Plan that aims to help people learn to see better. The activities supporting the five strategic objectives have already provided new opportunities for people to visit and to learn, and they offer the promise of an increasingly vibrant, responsible, and sound future for Toledo’s beloved Museum of Art.

The first objective, Expanding Access to the Collections, is exemplified by our ongoing effort to increase the Museum’s presence digitally and online. ’s stunning Irregular Polygons exhibition provided visitors with the opportunity to see art differently, and gave Museum staff and volunteers new opportunities for Teaching Visual Literacy, another of the building blocks. Mr. Stella’s visits 2,354 Visitors on public tours to Toledo made Working with Artists a rare treat for all who came into contact with the great artist. Mobile App and Virtual Galleries Make Collections Available Worldwide

There’s no question that a trip to the Toledo Museum of Art is a singular experi- ence. But those who can’t get to the Museum as often as they’d like to now have ac- cess to the Welles Sculpture Garden and 300 masterworks in the TMA collection thanks to TMA’s new mobile app and eMuseum database.

iPhone and Droid users can download the free app for a virtual tour of all 24 sculp- tures located throughout the Museum grounds. Via comprehensive text and audio information about each of the works, users can tour the Sculpture Garden even when the Museum is closed. Rounded out with visitor information, an up-to-date events calendar and the latest Museum news, the app also features an introductory video by Director Brian Kennedy.

“In this day and age, mobile devices are ubiquitous,” Dr. Kennedy said. “Making it possible to access Museum information digitally acknowledges that, and enhanc- es our reputation as a responsive, user-friendly institution.”

Online at toledomuseum.org, visitors can search or browse the 300-item master- works collection by object title, artist, material, date, or type, all accompanied by an extended description. Detailed viewing of many objects can be accomplished with the help of a zoom-and-pan tool on each page. Drawn from the Museum’s 2009 publication Masterworks, each “virtual gallery” includes a variety of work, from paintings and sculpture to jewelry and furniture, just as the physical TMA galleries do. But unlike the pieces on exhibit at 2445 Monroe Street, the online collection can be accessed from anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. In its first month, the online collection had 2,370 visitors from 54 countries.

“The masterworks featured online honor more than a century of collecting at the Toledo Museum of Art,” Dr. Kennedy said. “This selection is the first in an ongoing initiative to digitize and expand access to our collection for those planning a visit, and for those who can’t visit us in person.”

Staff has continued to add objects to eMuseum. Highlights of the glass collection will go online in early 2012 and additional genres such as European painting are slated over the next four years.

“Toledo is privileged to have a distinguished collection of great works by great art- ists,” Dr. Kennedy said. “It’s incumbent on us to make that collection available to as wide an audience as possible.”

It’s Green Behind the Scenes

The Toledo Museum of Art is a colorful place, but many people don’t know that behind the scenes the predominant color has been green for the past 20 years. It was that long ago when TMA implemented the first of what has turned out to be many energy-saving initiatives, including LED lighting, high efficiency microturbines, chillers and solar panels. TMA is the only museum in —and one of only a handful in the nation—to institute these practices so thoroughly.

Paul Bernard, manager of physical plant and capital projects, said the reason for the changes was simple: “We needed to reduce costs without compromising gal- lery conditions,” he explained, adding that some of the changes paid for themselves in as little as two months. “We’ve achieved great savings while maintaining the highest standards—never once putting the art in jeopardy.”

In 1992 the Museum began replacing incandescent light bulbs with LEDs and high-efficiency fluorescents. Twenty years later, the combination of these and other technologies has reduced yearly electric consumption by 79 percent. Along with saving the Museum hundreds of thousands of dollars, the efficiency efforts have improved the visitor experience while maintaining optimal atmospheric conditions for the artwork. Likewise, because the microturbines are a private power source, TMA can maintain the 70/50 temperature/humidity optimum condition for the collections even during an extended power outage.

In 2011, Mr. Bernard and his staff began experimenting with new LED lights for the galleries. The new lighting is as close to perfect as possible on the color rendering index (CRI), a rating which equates to natural light. The result is that visitors see the artwork’s true colors, and the pieces themselves are better protected from fading than with incandescent light.

Carol Bintz, chief operating officer, noted that while the positive results of these initiatives are many, perhaps the most important is the way the recouped energy costs impact the community.

“Saving on energy allows us to put money back into the programs that support our New LED lighting in the Perry & Co. chandelier, mission,” she said. which can be seen in gallery 33

Not only has the physical plant staff (above, with one of the Museum’s microturbines) helped achieve a 79 percent energy savings over the past 20 years, a large percentage of the department’s employees have stepped up to become major donors. From left, Tom Burke and Gil Seeburger, maintenance mechanics, Paul Bernard, physical plant manager, and Maintenance Mechanics Mike Lewandowski and Jeremy Lanham are among 20 staff members who are President’s Council members or above. 12 13 Increasing Visibility

In 2011 TMA did just that—four times—with the premiere of its Masters Series consisting of lectures and performances that brought artists and audiences to the Peristyle.

Frank Stella, renowned as one of the most significant artists to work in the abstract tradition in the past 50 years, drew an audience of more than 1,200 to the inau- gural Masters Series lecture on April 7, 2011, the night before the opening of his exhibition, Frank Stella: Irregular Polygons. Museum director and exhibition cu- rator Brian Kennedy joined Stella for the discussion, moderated by art critic Tyler Green, the blogger responsible for the “’s Favorite Art Museum” contest that was swept by TMA the year before. Generous support for the series came from the Museum Ambassadors, an active group of supporters and fundraisers.

In May, Kennedy was joined by fellow Midwest museum directors Graham Beal, Detroit Institute of Art, and David Franklin, Cleveland Museum of Art, for a Mas- ters Series discussion of their prestigious institutions and the challenges they face in light of the economic downturn and changing demographics. The gathering of three international museum directors was held in honor of International Museum Day, and moderated by art journalist and blogger Judith Dobrzynski.

Pieter Biesboer, emeritus curator of paintings at the Frans Hals Museum, Haar- lem, The Netherlands, appeared at the Peristyle in October to shed light on the his- tory and importance of TMA’s new acquisition, Van Campen Family Portrait in a Landscape by Hals. The presentation was co-sponsored by the TMA Ambassadors and the Mellon Foundation.

And fresh off appearances on Conan O’Brien, David Letterman and at the presti- gious Newport Jazz Festival, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue closed out the 2011 Masters Series, heating up the Peristyle with the hottest act in contemporary jazz. The Art Tatum Jazz Heritage Society co-sponsored the event.

In all, nearly 3,000 people attended the Masters Series, a number Kennedy finds encouraging.

“The Masters Series features artists of a magnitude befitting the caliber of the Mu- seum, in an unparalleled setting,” he said. “The warm reception for the series in its inaugural season foretells even better things to come.”

Going Outside the Box with Frank Stella

Art education is the main focus of the Museum’s mission, and it doesn’t take place just in the classrooms. In 2011 TMA brought Frank Stella’s groundbreaking series, Irregular Polygons, to Toledo, offering visitors an opportunity to explore and expand their visual understanding.

Created in 1965–66, Irregular Polygons was an “out-of-the-box” exploration of the picture plane, which until that time had overwhelmingly been defined by a rectangular, square or oval border. Stella broke that convention literally, creating canvases with irregular edges and using lines of striking color to define the shapes within a given piece. Brian Kennedy, acknowledged that at first glance the shaped paintings seem simple.

“But keep looking,” he said, “and amazing things happen.”

This is because, as viewers use their sense of sight, the brain begins to interpret and understand the lines and spatial relationships of the shapes at a higher level —the eye is directed by color and line, and movement is perceived in the juxtaposi- tion of the elements. Helping visitors expand their understanding by sight or “visu- al literacy” is one of TMA’s primary objectives, and Irregular Polygons was an ideal opportunity. Activities supporting the exhibition included hands-on manipulation of polygons, experimenting with the frame shape of images and creating geometric assemblages that tell a story.

The visual excitement of the exhibition was acknowledged by the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Steven Litt.

“If ever a group of paintings embodied the truism that seeing authentic artworks in the flesh is far more powerful than seeing them in reproductions,” Litt wrote, “it’s the Irregular Polygons of Frank Stella.”

In his video introduction to the show, Kennedy noted that the heightened visual understanding gained would inform visitors’ view of the world.

“You walk out of this exhibition and suddenly the world looks more interesting,” he said. “All those shapes, all those forms, all those colors and lines you will see on your way home. Life gets more interesting.”

GAPP Artist in Residence Creates Pill Spill

Beverly Fishman’s art has long explored the relationships among humans, science and medicine, but it hadn’t been rendered in glass until Fishman came to the To- ledo Museum of Art as the 2011 Guest Artist Pavilion Project (GAPP) artist-in- residence.

Fishman worked with Glass Pavilion staff to create more than 120 colorful glass capsules ranging in size from 6 to 15 inches long. The culmination of the residency was Pill Spill, a floor installation of the capsules within the walls of the Glass Pa- vilion. The cavities created by the Pavilion’s curving glass walls were strewn with the colorful “pills,” transforming the building into a larger-than-life circulatory system through which Fishman’s capsules seemed to flow.

Beverly Fishman was the fifth artist-in-residence sponsored by the GAPP pro- gram, which was established in 2007 and supported by TMA board member Sara Jane DeHoff. Participants are chosen by a committee that includes the director, curator of glass, curator of modern and , and representatives from development, marketing and educational programming. Experienced glass artists and those new to working in glass are chosen in alternate years. Visiting artists are on site for two to four weeks and are given opportunities to interact with Museum visitors, donors and community members.

Artist Gregory Euclide Creates Site-Specific Installation for Small Worlds

Minnesota-based artist and teacher Gregory Euclide’s work is strongly influenced by the lush ecosystems of his native Wisconsin and current home. He often uses found and recycled materials as a commentary on the importance of conservation and environmental protection.

In his two-story installation at the entrance of the Museum’s Small Worlds exhibi- tion, Euclide utilized discarded art shipping crates, packing foam, paper cutouts of trees found in paintings from the collection, organic matter from the Museum’s grounds, water from the and gravel from local parking lots for Take it With You—Toledo.

Inside seven of the crates Euclide built tiny dioramas of beautiful outdoor scenes, best seen through the lens of a smartphone camera. TMA art handlers assisted Euclide with the project’s construction and finishing details, while conservation staff treated all organic materials to prevent unwanted pests from entering the Museum. 18 19 Molly and Elliot, 3 months
