  • Conversational Repair Strategies in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders
CONVERSATIONAL REPAIR STRATEGIES IN ADOLESCENTS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS Biji Alice Philip A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2008 Committee: Lynne E. Hewitt, Advisor Mary L. Hare Graduate Faculty Representative Elizabeth I. Burroughs Lauren A. Katz Mark A. Earley © 2008 Biji Philip All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Lynne E. Hewitt, Advisor The purpose of this case study was to explore the conversational repair responses of 3 adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to communication breakdowns that occurred naturally in conversations. Adolescents with ASD are at the threshold of entry into independent living in society where their ability to manage communication breakdowns is essential. Of equal interest to the purposes of this study was describing how individuals with ASD were similar or different from each other in their sources of communication breakdowns, types of clarification requests, and repair responses used. The study used an embedded multiple-case study design to identify the sources of breakdowns, types of clarification requests made by the listener, and the types of repair responses used. Language samples were elicited across two conversational contexts (an Adult-Client context and a Peer with ASD context). A compiled coding system based on coding systems in the existing literature, pilot study findings, and those that emerged from the data was used to analyze the language samples. Results showed that all 3 participants exhibited and repaired breakdowns. Although similarities existed between the 3 participants in the types of repair responses used, they differed from each other in the variety of repair strategies used to resolve the breakdowns.

  • Benjamin Philpot: Managing Risks to Reap Big Rewards
Spectrum | Autism Research News https://www.spectrumnews.org PROFILES Benjamin Philpot: Managing risks to reap big rewards BY VIRGINIA HUGHES 20 DECEMBER 2012 1 / 5 Spectrum | Autism Research News https://www.spectrumnews.org Family guy: Benjamin Philpot, here with his family on Chiloé Island off the coast of Chile, loves seeing the world through his daughters’ naiveté. In November 2009, Benjamin Philpot's research team experienced what all scientists hope for and most never experience: a Eureka moment. The discovery began many months earlier with a wild idea for finding a treatment for Angelman syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by developmental delay, lack of speech, and seizures. The syndrome is caused by mutations in a gene called UBE3A. In the neurons of healthy people, the copy of this gene inherited from the father is silenced and the maternal copy expressed. In individuals with Angelman syndrome, mutations or deletions on the maternal copy prevent the UBE3A protein from forming. Philpot’s team at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, set out to answer a question that had been floating around scientific meetings and review papers for years: What if a drug could un- silence the paternal copy? Postdoctoral fellow Hsien-Sung Huang began in April 2009 with mice that carry a molecular tag that glows green if the paternal copy of UBE3A is expressed. Arthur Beaudet's team at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston created the mice and shared them with Philpot and others.) TITLE Approval of Property Alterations Valued at $400,000 at Memorial Stadium 2. PURPOSE This Board Action Report details $400K in property alternations to Memorial Stadium that Alpha Entertainment, LLC (“XFL”) would like to make as a tenant. 3. RECOMMENDED MOTION I move that the School Board authorize the Superintendent to approve property alterations valued in the amount of $400,000 to be made by Alpha E ntertainment to Memorial Stadium as detailed in the rental agreement attached to the School Board Action Report. 4. BACKGROUND INFORMATION a. Background The XFL, a professional football league owned by Alpha Entertainment, has requested to rent the district’s Memorial Stadium for their Seattle Dragons team practice and training sessions. The property will be used by the XFL as a practice and training facility from December through April of each year. To bring the property up to their standards as a professional practice facility, the XFL has asked to make alterations to the property at their own expense, which will become the property of the district upon installation. The alternations are valued at $400,000 and would include updates to communication equipment, significant locker room upgrades including new lockers, flooring, and improved ventilation, an ice machine, commercial laundry equipment, etc. In addition to providing a better facility for the XFL’s Seattle Dragons to practice in, the updates should also benefit the student athletes who use Memorial Stadium.

CONTEMPORARY ANIMATION: THE SIMPSONS TO SOUTH PARK-FILM 4165 (4 Credits) SPRING 2015 Tuesdays 6:00 P.M.-10:00 P.M. Social Work 134 Instructor: Steven Pecchia-Bekkum Office Phone: 801-935-9143 E-Mail: [email protected] Office Hours: M-W 3:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M. (FMAB 107C) Course Description: Since it first appeared as a series of short animations on the Tracy Ullman Show (1987), The Simpsons has served as a running commentary on the lives and attitudes of the American people. Its subject matter has touched upon the fabric of American society regarding politics, religion, ethnic identity, disability, sexuality and gender-based issues. Also, this innovative program has delved into the realm of the personal; issues of family, employment, addiction, and death are familiar material found in the program’s narrative. Additionally, The Simpsons has spawned a series of animated programs (South Park, Futurama, Family Guy, Rick and Morty etc.) that have also been instrumental in this reflective look on the world in which we live. The abstraction of animation provides a safe emotional distance from these difficult topics and affords these programs a venue to reflect the true nature of modern American society. Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to provide the intellectual basis for a deeper understanding of The Simpsons, South Park, Futurama, Family Guy, and Rick and Morty within the context of the culture that nurtured these animations. The student will, upon successful completion of this course: (1) recognize cultural references within these animations. (2) correlate narratives to the issues about society that are raised.
