ANNUAL HORSE SHOW HUNTER  JUMPER  E UITATION

U S E F A A - R AT E D Welcome! Hunt Horse Complex Raleigh, NC

Dear Members, Friends, Exhibitors, and Sponsors, It is with great pleasure and excitement that The North Carolina Hunter Jumper Association Board of Directors and Annual Horse Show Committee welcome you to the 35th NCHJA Annual Horse Show! Once again the Annual Show celebrates our membership, recognizing the many accomplishments of riders, trainers, owners and horses over the past year. Over the past 35 years this horse show has seen many changes but horsemanship and southern hospitality remain the cornerstones of its existence. We welcome you to begin your day with our hospitality breakfasts and end your day each evening with our ringside socials. This year our Medal Finals will be scheduled over two evenings with ringside festivities both nights. Once again we will award $1000 grants to the winners of our Childrens’ Medal and the Bryan Jones Memorial Medal. We are excited to showcase a $10,000 USHJA Hunter Derby with a ringside “Southern Soiree”, a $5000 Pony Hunter Derby and a $7500 Jumper Classic. Opportunity classes, including a $500 Wee Derby, round out the schedule for our youngest competitors. This years Annual Show will benefit in part Horse and Buddy of Raleigh, Mitey Riders of Charlotte and Safe Haven Equine Rescue and Retirement of High Point. All three of these programs offer therapy services through and for some very special four-legged friends. The continued success of the Annual Show is a testament to NCHJA members, exhibitors, sponsors, vendors, volunteers and the board. We thank each and every one of you for choosing to spend your time with us at this year’s Annual Show! On behalf of the show committee and the NCHJA Board... Welcome! Please enjoy the show! About the Cover Whitney Kurlan, a self-taught artist, has always had a passionate of nature and animals, especially horses. Born in Florida, she began riding at an early age. Horses have continued to be a strong influence not only as a lifestyle, but it evident early on in her artwork. In 2014, she came back to art full time after an accident, which left her with a severe spinal injury. In 2016, she was spotlighted in the Connecticut Post Sunday Magazine with the cover article about her return to art. The WEF Sport Horse Auction in Florida invited Whitney to be the sole artist to exhibit and auction two equine paintings in the sporthorse auction early in 2016 and was a success. She is a current member of the Connecticut Pastel Society, Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Inc, and the New Canaan Society of the Arts. Having restarted her art career full time, Whitney is currently working on several projects. She has been commissioned to illustrate a series of 6 picture books for children ages 4 to 7 featuring her watercolors. She is also dedicated to endangered species and conservation, so in an effort to fulfill that goal she now partners with a few companies and individuals to promote her artwork additionally donating a percentage of her profits to wildlife nonprofits and also supporting wildlife conservation. For more information about the artists work or to contact the artist for a private commission please email Whitney at [email protected] on her website or you can call her directly at 860.508.4997. theartofwhitneykurlan.com

George T. Baker (1900-1963) was the founder, President, and Chairman of the Board of National Airlines. He also was the founder of the George T. Baker Foundation. His daughter, Barbara Baker Beahn is now the President and Chairman of the Board of the GTBF. Although George rode as a teenager, riding the Montana range, guarding herds of sheep and cattle (“with a 22, a 45, and eating pork and beans”) he never rode after that. However, he instilled in Barbara a love of horses and riding from the time she was a toddler. Her first horse show was the leadline class in Blowing Rock, where the family still has a summer home. Barbara continues to have hunters and Saddlebreds. The Baker Foundation focuses on helping local organizations, where they feel they can make a difference, as opposed to large, national charities where they would get lost among the multitudes of other donors. The foundation is pleased to make a donation to the North Carolina Hunter Jumper Association to help with their ongoing scholarship awards to deserving applicants.

Louise M. Miracle, “Lou” as she was known to her friends was a true horsewoman and champion of the NCHJA and the Annual Horse Show. A former Board Member, she believed in the importance and the betterment of our “membership and medals” show. According to her daughter, Katherine Miracle, she would want to see our show continue to grow, to not just survive but to thrive in this ever changing world of horse shows. It is for that reason that Katherine proudly supports and sponsors the NCHJA Annual Horse Show in a BIG way. To continue the legacy and to honor her mother, Lou, Katherine sponsored last year and again this year the $7500 Jumper Classic. It is the pleasure of the NCHJA Board and Horse Show to remember Louise M. Miracle in this way.
