UAB’s cardiac electrophysiology physicians treat various cardiac arrhythmias, Tom McElderry, MD which affect more than 14 million Americans. Heart arrhythmias vary from Section Chief, Electrophysiology Co-Director, Heart & Vascular simple problems to more complex diagnoses. UAB physicians have vast Center, Associate Professor experience treating both the basic arrhythmias—atrioventricular nodal reentry HEART & VASCULAR SERVICES tachycardia (AVNRT), Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome and atrial flutter— as well as the more complex arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation, ventricular Vance J. Plumb, MD tachycardia and arrhythmias that can occur after cardiac surgery. Professor
Some arrhythmias cause palpitations or syncope while others, such as ventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation (risk factor for stroke), can be life-threatening. Ongoing research and clinical trials at UAB are leading physicians to new therapies that can increase survival and lead to a better Takumi, Yamada, MD quality of life for patients. Clinical Overview
William Maddox, MD Physicians in the UAB electrophysiology group perform hundreds of Assistant Professor procedures each year and are among the most experienced in the nation in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of arrhythmias. Each treatment regimen is tailored to the patient and type of arrhythmia and can include medication, cardioversion, catheter ablation, pacemaker and/or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation. Vineet Kumar, MD Assistant Professor Evaluation begins with a consultation and, if indicated, a cardiac electrophysiology study to assess the problem and to enable the cardiologist to determine a treatment regimen that will work best for the patient. Electrophysiology procedures are performed in the UAB Heart and Vascular Harish Doppalapudi, MD, Center, one of the largest in the Southeast. It encompasses 55,000 square (Practice limited to Birmingham feet with the newest technology available, including procedure suites VA only) dedicated to electrophysiology.
Innovation
UAB physicians have access to the latest technology and investigational therapies for patients. Cardiologists in the group lead clinical studies as national primary investigators and have participated in numerous other clinical trials to study the effectiveness of treatment methods. Because of their involvement in clinical studies, UAB cardiac patients receive the most up-to- date and innovative care available.
