It highlights work from some of the form's greatest practitioners, including John Woo, Michael Mann, Steven Spielberg, Akira Kurosawa, Kathryn Bigelow, Jackie Chan, and much more. As the curators note, “In a sense, all movies are ’action’ movies; cinema is movement and light, after all. Since nearly the very beginning, spectacle and stunt work have been essential parts of the form. There is nothing quite like watching physical feats, pulse-pounding drama, and epic confrontations on a large screen alongside other astonished moviegoers. See It Big! Action offers up some of our favorites of the genre.” In all, 32 films will be shown, many of them in 35mm prints. COPAS—Current Objectives of Postgraduate American Studies 17.1 (2016) The Heroine and the Meme: Participating in Feminist Discourses Online Svenja Hohenstein ABSTRACT: This article examines the relationship between feminist participatory culture and online activism. I argue that Internet users participate in feminist discourses online by creating memes that present popular fictional female heroes such as Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games), Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), or the Disney Princess Merida (Brave). Emphasizing specific characteristics and plot points of the respective stories, memes project, spread, and celebrate feminist ideas such as female empowerment, agency, and equality. KEYWORDS: Memes, Female Heroes, Online Feminism, Participatory Culture, Katniss Everdeen, Buffy Summers Introduction: Feminisms and Digital Culture Online activists and bloggers use media like memes to transform popular culture into a tool for social change. The result? Young people online are transformed from passive pop culture consumers to engagers and makers. (Martin and Valenti 13) In this article, I take up Courtney Martin and Vanessa Valenti’s claim that producing and sharing Internet memes can be a tool for social change because it enables users to critically participate in social and cultural discourses online. I concentrate on one specific popular culture phenomenon and observe how it is transported online and transformed into memes that contribute to feminist discourses. I focus on fictional female heroes who occupy leading roles in movies and TV-shows and analyze their representation in different types of memes. Katniss Everdeen from the highly successful Hunger Games trilogy can probably be regarded as the best-known representative of this type of character, but she is only one amongst many. -

Joseph Sunn Jue and Run Run Shaw out OF
CAAMFest 2014 Honors Two Film Production Pioneers: Joseph Sunn Jue and Run Run Shaw SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 13, 2014 — The Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) is excited to showcase two pioneers from Asian and Asian American film history: Joseph Sunn Jue and Run Run Shaw. Legendary Chinese American producer Joseph Sunn Jue formed the Grandview Film Company in San Francisco in 1933. It was the only operating Chinese American motion picture company in the United States during the 1930s. With the help of the Hong Kong Film Archive, CAAMFest 2014 will present two of seven surviving Grandview productions for the first time in 67 years. Run Run Shaw is one of the most influential figures in the Asian entertainment industry. The Hong Kong mogul and movie producer was also a philanthropist who donated billions to charities in his lifetime and also founded Shaw Brothers Studios. On January 7, 2014, Shaw passed away at the age of 106. CAAM pays tribute to his legacy with a screening of three of his studio’s spectacular cinematic creations. CAAM is pleased to present these films at the Great Star Theater, Chinatown’s last remaining film theater which showed the early works of Run Run Shaw. OUT OF THE VAULTS: REDISCOVERING GRANDVIEW FILMS CAAMFest’s Out of the Vaults showcases films ripe for rediscovery. This year’s presentation highlights Joseph Sunn Jue and his Grandview Film Company. Producing a series of imaginative comedies, melodramas and romances geared towards the Cantonese‐speaking market in the 1930s, Grandview captured a unique era in the lives of Chinese Americans. -

The concept of Chinese aesthetics, when carefully defined and circumscribed, illu- minates the relationship between narrative space and cultural tradition in the films of King Hu. Chinese aesthetics is largely based on three ethical concerns that muy be termed nonattachment, antirationalism, and perspectivism. This essay addresses the representation of "Chineseness" in the films of King Hu, a director based in Hong Kong and Taiwan whose cinema draws on themes and norms derived from Chinese painting, theater, and literature. Critical discussions of his work have often addressed the question of the ability of the cinema, a for- eign medium rooted in a mechanical age, to express the salient traits of Chinas longstanding artistic traditions. At stake is the relationship between film form and the national culture, embodied in the concept of a Chinese aesthetic. Vol.8, No.2. � 2008 Academy of East Asian Studies. pp.163-177 On the Rooftop: A Study of Marginalized Youth Films in Hong Kong Cinema1 Xuelin ZHOU University of Auckland ABSTRACT Researchers of contemporary Hong Kong cinema have tended to concentrate on the monumental, metropolitan and/or historical works of such esteemed directors as Wong Kar-Wai, John Woo and Tsui Hark. This paper focuses instead on a number of low-budget films that circulated below the radar of Chinese as well as Western film scholars but were important to local young viewers, i.e. a cluster of films that feature deviant and marginalized youth as protagonists. They are very interesting as evidence of perceived social problems in contemporary Hong Kong. The paper aims to outline some main features of these marginalized youth films produced since the mid-1990s. Keywords: Hong Kong, cinema, youth culture, youth film, marginalized youth On the Rooftop A scene set on the rooftop of a skyscraper in central Hong Kong appears in New Police Story(2004), or Xin jingcha gushi, by the Hong Kong director Benny Chan, an action drama that features an aged local police officer struggling to fight a group of trouble-making, tech-savvy teenagers.2 The young people are using the rooftop for an “X-party,” an occasion for showing off their skills of skateboarding and cycling, by doing daredevil stunts along the edge of the building. -

Archetypes in Literature Situational, Character and Symbolic What is an archetype? • An archetype is a term used to describe universal symbols that evoke deep and sometimes unconscious responses in a reader • In literature, characters, images, and themes that symbolically embody universal meanings and basic human experiences, regardless of when or where they live, are considered archetypes. Situational Archetype • Situations that occur over and over in different versions of the story. • For example, in versions of Cinderella, a young girl seeks freedom from her current situation. She undergoes some kind of transformation and is better off at the end of the story. Situational- The Quest • Describes the search for someone or something, which when found and brought back will restore balance to the society. Situational- The Task • The task is the superhuman feat must be accomplished in order to fulfill the ultimate goal. Situational- The Journey • The hero is sent in search for some truth of information necessary to restore life, justice, and/or harmony to the kingdom. • The journey includes a series of trials the hero will face along the way. Situational- The Initiation • The initiation refers to the moment, usually psychological, in which the hero comes into maturity. • The hero gains a new awareness into the nature of problems and understands his/ her responsibility for trying to solve the issue. Situational- The Fall • This archetype describes a descent in action from a higher to a lower position in life. • This fall is often accompanied by expulsion from a kind of paradise as a penalty for breaking the rules. Situational- Death and Rebirth • This is the most common of situational archetypes. -

Humanity 2012 Papers. ~~~~~~ “‘We are all the same, we are all unique’: The paradox of using individual celebrity as metaphor for national (transnational) identity.” Joyleen Christensen University of Newcastle Introduction: This paper will examine the apparently contradictory public persona of a major star in the Hong Kong entertainment industry - an individual who essentially redefined the parameters of an industry, which is, itself, a paradox. In the last decades of the 20th Century, the Hong Kong entertainment industry's attempts to translate American popular culture for a local audience led to an exciting fusion of cultures as the system that was once mocked by English- language media commentators for being equally derivative and ‘alien’, through translation and transmutation, acquired a unique and distinctively local flavour. My use of the now somewhat out-dated notion of East versus West sensibilities will be deliberate as it reflects the tone of contemporary academic and popular scholarly analysis, which perfectly seemed to capture the essence of public sentiment about the territory in the pre-Handover period. It was an explicit dichotomy, with commentators frequently exploiting the notion of a culture at war with its own conception of a national identity. However, the dwindling Western interest in Hong Kong’s fate after 1997 and the social, economic and political opportunities afforded by the reunification with Mainland China meant that the new millennia saw Hong Kong's so- called ‘Culture of Disappearance’ suddenly reconnecting with its true, original self. Humanity 2012 11 Alongside this shift I will track the career trajectory of Andy Lau – one of the industry's leading stars1 who successfully mimicked the territory's movement in focus from Western to local and then regional. -

MIYAKI Yukio (GONG Muduo) 宮木幸雄(龔慕鐸)(b. 1934) Cinematographer Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, Miyaki joined Ari Production in 1952 and once worked as assistant to cinematographer Inoue Kan. He won an award with TV programme Kochira Wa Shakaibu in Japan in 1963. There are many different accounts on how he eventually came to work in Hong Kong. One version has it that he came in 1967 with Japanese director Furukawa Takumi to shoot The Black Falcon (1967) and Kiss and Kill (1967) for Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Ltd. Another version says that the connection goes back to 1968 when he helped Chang Cheh film the outdoor scenes of Golden Swallow (1968) and The Flying Dagger (1969) in Japan. Yet another version says that he signed a contract with Shaws as early as 1965. By the mid-1970s, under the Chinese pseudonym Gong Muduo, Miyaki worked as a cinematographer exclusively for Chang Cheh’s films. He took part in over 30 films, including The Singing Thief (1969), Return of the One-armed Swordsman (1969), The Invincible Fist (1969), Dead End (1969), Have Sword, Will Travel (1969), Vengeance! Introduction
INTRODUCTION The wuxia film is the oldest genre in the Chinese cinema that has remained popular to the present day. Yet despite its longevity, its history has barely been told until fairly recently, as if there was some force denying that it ever existed. Indeed, the genre was as good as non-existent in China, its country of birth, for some fifty years, being proscribed over that time, while in Hong Kong, where it flowered, it was gen- erally derided by critics and largely neglected by film historians. In recent years, it has garnered a following not only among fans but serious scholars. David Bordwell, Zhang Zhen, David Desser and Leon Hunt have treated the wuxia film with the crit- ical respect that it deserves, addressing it in the contexts of larger studies of Hong Kong cinema (Bordwell), the Chinese cinema (Zhang), or the generic martial arts action film and the genre known as kung fu (Desser and Hunt).1 In China, Chen Mo and Jia Leilei have published specific histories, their books sharing the same title, ‘A History of the Chinese Wuxia Film’ , both issued in 2005.2 This book also offers a specific history of the wuxia film, the first in the English language to do so. It covers the evolution and expansion of the genre from its beginnings in the early Chinese cinema based in Shanghai to its transposition to the film industries in Hong Kong and Taiwan and its eventual shift back to the Mainland in its present phase of development. Subject and Terminology Before beginning this history, it is necessary first to settle the question ofterminology , in the process of which, the characteristics of the genre will also be outlined.
