Thomas’ success has not gone unnoticed by the community. Over the past four seasons, the Pacers have finished in the top 15 in Division II in home attendance. On March 27 in a 16-4 win over West Virginia State, the Pacers set a new school single game attendance mark with 1,025 fans as part of a “Pack-the-Park” promotion. Thomas also instilled in his team the confidence needed to win the big games as the Pacers have won 38 games played against ranked opponents in the past five seasons. USC Aiken’s original mascot What is a Pacer? was “The Rebel” with the logo depicted as an old “Confederate Man”. But USCA quickly changed to “The Pacer” which more accu- rately symbolized the community. Aiken, S.C. is a prominent winter training ground for racehorses. Every Spring, the city hosts the “Aiken Triple Crown” with the Trials first, the Steeplechase next, and new in 2004, Polo (spon- sored by the USC Aiken Athletic Department) on the final of three Pacers, and their cousins-- ously on the sulky with the crop, or successive weekends. Trotters, are horses bred and whip, in hand. A Pacer’s right front trained to race in harness or sulky and back leg hit the ground at the races. The driver sits precari- same time, alternating side to side.
