Greer. He graduated from Louisiana College with a major in speech and a teaching minor in English. He received a Th.D. from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and later earned his M.A. in English from the University of Evansville. He began his teaching career at Oakland City College in 1968 as a professor in the English Department. He served in this capacity until 1976. Dr. Greer then made a career change to full-time preaching at First Baptist Church of Prescott, Arkansas. By 1977 he was teaching part-time at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. After three years as pastor in Prescott, Dr. Greer returned to teaching full-time at Ouachita, where he served from 1979 until his death. He was the chair of the English department and occupied the Bennie Sue and Clarence Anthony Professor of Humanities chair. Throughout his lifetime Dr. Greer was an active member and served on the board of many local and statewide organizations. A few of these are the Arkansas Humanities Council, Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas, Civitan International, Central Arkansas Development Council, and the Clark County Democratic Committee. During his time of teaching at Ouachita, Dr. Greer also served as interim pastor for numerous churches. He formed many memorable relationships with congregations throughout the state of Arkansas. In the minds of many, however, one of Dr. Greer’s most enduring legacies will be the ties that he engineered between OBU and China. His travels to China began in 1987, when he served as a designated Foreign Expert to Zhengzhou University. Throughout the subsequent years, he made 18 trips to various cities throughout China to present academic papers, lead conferences, and teach courses, taking friends and family with him. In 1999 he initiated the Annual Workshop between Ouachita Baptist University and English Department of Peking University faculty members. He was planning the 2007 workshop at the time of his death, November 15, 2006. Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way.

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, NORTHRIDGE AN EXAMINATION OF FACTORS THAT SHAPE OUTCOMES FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN MALE STUDENT ATHLETES IN COMMUNITY COLLEGES A Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership By Dorothy Sherman Smith August 2016 The dissertation of Dorothy Sherman Smith is approved: ____________________________________ ____________________ William De La Torre, Ph. D Date ___________________________________ ____________________ Mr. Richard Wells Date __________________________________ _____________________ Nathan Durdella, Ph. D, Chair Date California State University, Northridge ii Dedication First, I would like to honor God for the beautiful life and family with which he has blessed me. I dedicate this dissertation to the long line of hard-working African American men in my family who did not have the opportunities and successes of formal education, but who survived the school of hard knocks with extraordinary resiliency, industriousness and tenacity. I was blessed to have been surrounded by such great men. It is because of the strong spirit of these men that I have been able to indulge in such a study as this. To my maternal grandfather, Frank Crosby of Greenville, South Carolina, a famous rock layer who built bridges and walls that are still standing today, with his name on them; and who settled in Nichol town, buying enough land for each of his 7 children to build their homes, I will forever be thankful to him for setting an example for many to emulate and for his perseverance in attaining unimaginable goals. It was his hard work and resiliency that influenced my mother, Bernice Crosby Sherman, to whom this dissertation is dedicated, a housewife and homemaker, to teach her children the importance of independence, a strong work ethic, value of education, prudence, wisdom, generosity and the worth of standing on one’s own merits.

Later I came back to Guangzhou to work in Nan Fong Hotel. In my free time, I went to the movies with my mother and father because I liked movies very much. Later my family immigrated to the U.S.A. My life is very simple because I don’t like to go anywhere. Xiu Jie Cui My Life in China I was born in Jilin, China. I have two brothers and two sisters. Shanghai International Film Festival and Market, Shanghai and Beijing meetings Report by Chris Oliver and Ross Matthews To report that the China screen landscape is undergoing change is not new news. All facets of the screen industry development, production, distribution, exhibition and broadcasting are going through change – a change that is in a positive direction. The change in the way the Chinese industry is engaging with the rest of world’s screen industries, including the way Government instrumentalities are relating to other countries (eg treaties) will be of real benefit to the Chinese and the international screen industry. Australia is well placed to benefit from those changes if (that’s capital IF) Australian producers/players understand the rules of engagement with Chinese producers, broadcasters and exhibitors and the Chinese government departments involved in implementing government policy. Why should Australia engage with China? There are obvious commercial reasons. Firstly, the Chinese gross box office (GBO) has increased by at least 30 per cent in the last year to US$909 million – and has now surpassed Australia to be number six in the world. According to those we had discussions with in China and what can be gleaned from the screen press, the China GBO will grow by at least a further 40 per cent in the 2010 calendar year! • A Piece of History
A Piece of History Theirs is one of the most distinctive and recognizable sounds in the music industry. The four-part harmonies and upbeat songs of The Oak Ridge Boys have spawned dozens of Country hits and a Number One Pop smash, earned them Grammy, Dove, CMA, and ACM awards and garnered a host of other industry and fan accolades. Every time they step before an audience, the Oaks bring four decades of charted singles, and 50 years of tradition, to a stage show widely acknowledged as among the most exciting anywhere. And each remains as enthusiastic about the process as they have ever been. “When I go on stage, I get the same feeling I had the first time I sang with The Oak Ridge Boys,” says lead singer Duane Allen. “This is the only job I've ever wanted to have.” “Like everyone else in the group,” adds bass singer extraordinaire, Richard Sterban, “I was a fan of the Oaks before I became a member. I’m still a fan of the group today. Being in The Oak Ridge Boys is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.” The two, along with tenor Joe Bonsall and baritone William Lee Golden, comprise one of Country's truly legendary acts. Their string of hits includes the Country-Pop chart-topper Elvira, as well as Bobbie Sue, Dream On, Thank God For Kids, American Made, I Guess It Never Hurts To Hurt Sometimes, Fancy Free, Gonna Take A Lot Of River and many others. In 2009, they covered a White Stripes song, receiving accolades from Rock reviewers.
