John Hone Jr. was born on December 14, 1844 to John Hone Sr., and Jane Oliver Hazard Perry Hone (granddaughter of Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry). John first married Mary Crane in Nov 1869 and together they had three children; John Hone, Frederick DePeyster Hone, and Augustus C Hone, before Mary’s death in 1876. He later married Maria Cadwalader in April 1880 and had one child, Hester Gouverneur Hone-Bartol. His great uncle, Philip Hone, was Mayor of New York from 1826-1827. John Hone was a financier and former Governor and Vice President of the New York Stock Exchange. Although he lived over forty years in , he kept a voting residence in New Jersey. He was a delegate-at-large to the National Convention at Chicago which nominate . He was active in many philanthropies, charities and civic movements. He was a member of the Metropolitan, , Knickerbocker, and Union Clubs, as well as the Seventh Regiment Veterans' Association, George Washington Post, G.A.R.: Sons of the Revolution, and Vice Commandant of the Society of the War of 1812. He passed away on March 21, 1915 after having been confined to his bed for over a year due to health reasons. (Source: New York Times, March 22, 1915)

Three of them are of silhouettes of men. The remaining two are headshot portraits, one of an older man in a top hat, and the last one of a woman with a red hat. The latter is the only drawing in color, and is signed by what appears to be a stylized J H. • Misc. Cadwalader family ephemera. Including calling cards of John L. Cadwalader, Assistant Secretary of War, Miss Maria Cadwalader, and Miss Mary Cadwalader Rowle. Also, an invitation from John L. Cadwalader to his home in N.Y., an invitation from Mr. T.
