The manor of Goldingtons originally derived its name from Peter and Grace de Goldington who held it in the 13th century. It is understood that Grace was the daughter of Acarius, who was one of the Knights of in 1166. In the 14th century Bertram de Goldington held the land.

After the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII (1539), the Manor was granted to William Earl of Essex and others as Trustees. In the following years the manor was acquired by a Master of the Rolls, Lord Bruce of Kinloss, and later by Sir David Williams Bart, the eldest son of Sir Gilbert Williams, Vicar of Sarratt.

Goldingtons itself was passed from John de Chilterns in the early 17th century to William Kingsley of Rooshall (being the other Manor of Sarratt) and in 1737 Sir Gilbert Williams acquired Goldingtons.

In 1860, records show that the house passed to Herbert Ingrams, who was the proprietor of The Illustrated London News and then to Thomas Clutterbuck of Mickelfield Hall, Sarratt. The Clutterbuck family owned the estate for over 100 years, until 1977.
