Background on Bielema  Bielema is the sixth-youngest head coach in NCAA Bowl Subdivision football.  With 28 wins in his fi rst three season, Bielema is already ninth in Wisconsin history for head coaching victories (among the 27 coaches in UW history). His 28 victories is the most for a Badger head coach in his fi rst three seasons (Phil King had 25 from 1896-98).

 Bielema’s 28-11 record is second-best among the 11 head coaches hired prior to the 2006 season. He trails only Chris Peterson of Boise State (35-4). Bielema and Peterson are the only two of those 11 head coaches have led their teams to three straight bowl appearances.

 In 2006, Bielema became just the third rookie head coach in NCAA Division IA history to guide his team to 12 victories. The 12 wins also were a Wisconsin record.  Bielema was named 2006 Big Ten Coach of the Year and was one of fi ve fi nalists for the Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year Award. He also was a fi nalist for the 2006 Schutt Sports Division IA Coach of the Year Award. NATION’S YOUNGEST  Wisconsin is 47-17 (.734) since Bielema arrived in Madison as defensive HEAD COACHES coordinator in 2004. He served in that role for two years before taking over as head coach in 2006. COACH, SCHOOL D.O.B. AGE*  Teams for which Bielema has coached since the start of the 2002 season have Lane Kiffi n, Tennessee 5/9/1975 34 accumulated a combined 69-23 (.750) record. Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern 12/2/1974 34  The four head coaches for whom Bielema worked (Hayden Fry, Kirk Ferentz, Steve Sarkisian, Washington 3/8/1974 35 Bill Snyder and Barry Alvarez) have combined to win 467 games and guide their teams to 43 bowl games. David Elson, Western Kentucky 8/26/1971 38 Mario Cristobal, Florida International 9/24/1970 38  In August 2007, Bielema was named to In Business magazine’s “40 Under 40,” a listing of the top young leaders in the Madison area. Bret Bielema, Wisconsin 1/13/1970 39 Al Golden, Temple 7/4/1969 40  Bielema coached Wisconsin to wins in 17 of his fi rst 18 games. That represents the second-best start to a head coaching career in Big Ten history. Only Mike Locksley, New Mexico 12/15/1968 40 Michigan’s legendary Fielding Yost, went 55-0-1 from 1901-05, had a better Derek Dooley, Louisiana Tech 6/10/1968 41 beginning to a career. Butch Jones, Central Michigan 1/17/1968 41  Head coach Bret Bielema was 21-5 in his two seasons at the helm at UW. Only * as of Sept. 1, 2009 two other men in Big Ten history — Michigan’s Fielding Yost (22) and Ohio State’s Jim Tressel (21) — guided their teams to as many as 21 wins in their fi rst two seasons as Big Ten head coaches.
