In fact, your kids con2nue to demonstrate an amazing level of insighXulness in their learning. As we move toward December, I want to take a moment to reflect upon the many things for which I am most thankful. Not only do I have a beau2ful family, but I also have the ul2mate job and profession. I am so grateful to have this opportunity to serve as Mill Run’s principal, in a community that places the highest value on educang the complete child. I invite all of you to reflect upon your own blessings during this season. Do you know that through our recent campaign of giving, we raised over $2700? The PTO will use these funds to purchase gi] cards for the essen2als (food, clothing, and gasoline) for local families-in-need. Without ques2on, these items are essen2al to our existence; but we are leaving out another key need that we have as human beings…LOVE! Even in the toughest of 2mes, we can always fall back on the fact that there are many people in our lives who love and depend upon us. Let’s not lose sight of this fact. We thank you for allowing us to play (what we believe is) a significant role in your children’s lives. They are most certainly amongst our greatest treasures! Have a blessed holiday season! Kindest regards, Paul L. Vickers Congratulations to Mill Run’s October Super Citizens!! Where did the year go?!?!” I know this is certainly the case for my family. As I reflect on this school year thus far, I have an overwhelming feeling of pride, joy, and appreciaon for all stakeholders in our Mill Run Community. As Mr. Vickers men2oned in his newsle/er ar2cle, so many of our families par2cipated in the annual Mill Run For Fun and our Family Heritage Fes2val, which helped raise nearly $3,000 to support our families in need. In addi2on to this outstanding accomplishment, so many of you have made donaons toward helping Mill Run families in need. This was made possible because of you and your efforts to support others in our community. From the bo*om of my heart, thank you so much for your generous and kind hearts! This support, without a doubt, will have a lasng impression on all of our families for many years to come! With a slight shi] of focus, I wanted to con2nue to encourage our children to read throughout the month of December and especially over the winter break. Reading is the most powerful gi] our children can possess, and that is why it makes it that much more important for children to have books or a Kindle in their hands. Below are a few ways you can insert comprehension ques2ons into your conversaon with your students. Addi2onally, if you are looking for a book to read during the month of December, you may wish to visit my blog. I am featuring a “Book of the Month” for all to consider. • When reading a picture book, look at the illustraons and have your child ask him/herself what the main idea of the picture is. What is this picture trying to tell me? • Check out a variety of genres from the library. With each new genre, prac2ce finding the main idea so that your child is exposed to a variety of texts. • Have your child make a connec2on to the text. If your child can connect to what s/he is reading, it will be easier to understand the main idea of the text. • Have your child prac2ce asking him/herself ques2ons like: “What ques2ons do I ask myself to find the main idea when I am reading?” or “What does the author want me to learn?” or “What is the big idea of what I am reading?” • Find examples of main idea/comprehension tests online. Explore how they are worded with your child. Help him or her understand the way tests ask students to state the main idea. Examples: “This story is mainly about _____?” or “Which best states the main idea of ______?” or “Which of the following is a theme of _____?” or “What is the main idea of paragraph 1 of this passage?” I am so thankful to be a part of this wonderful Mill Run family and am so excited to con2nue such a beau2ful relaonship with you and your family! Please Label Jackets Now that the weather is getting a bit cooler, please make sure to write your children’s names inside their jackets. You would be surprised how many jackets are left at school each year and never reclaimed. At the end of each year, we wash our lost and found items and give them to charity. We always check for identification labels and return them to the appropriate children first. Please remember that you can find our Lost and Found in the two wardrobe cabinets outside of the gym. Veltri’s Vision By: Marisa Veltri, Administrative Intern It is hard to believe that we are about to enter a new year…2015! I would like to extend a warm holiday greeting to all of our Mill Run families. I hope that all of you will have the opportunity to spend some time with family and friends this holiday season.
