Ken McCoy Everywhere I turned there was another hot book or a must-attend seminar about the topic. “Who are you discipling?” was a com- mon question asked among youth leaders. I latched onto “disci- pleship” as a buzzword that was guaranteed to give a fledgling youth pastor some credibility. There was only one problem – nobody seemed to agree about what discipleship is. On one end of the spectrum were those who believed that discipleship meant leaving everything behind in order to follow a mentor – anything less wasn’t “true” discipleship. On the other extreme were the folks who equated education with dis- cipleship – they believed that the act of teaching Biblical truth was “true” discipleship. (I even heard one nursery attendant exclaim, “We are actively discipling our three-year-olds!”) I guess I landed somewhere between those two positions. Yes, I know that “disciple” and “discipline” are related terms. And yeah, I know that mentoring and teaching are included in the discipling process. That all just seemed so, umm, dry. When you’re working with young people every day, engaging with them in their activities and relationships, “mentoring” and “teaching” just seem kind of detached. Now, with hindsight, I can see that “discipleship” means “inten- tional influence.” You and I have a ton of influence with young people because of our role as youth leaders. Oh sure, we sometimes question whether we have any influence or impact on our young friends, but believe me, we do. But influence itself is not discipleship. When we are intentional about our influence, discipleship happens. To help you in this vital ministry process, we’ve assembled this issue of Youth Leaders Only. In this magazine you’ll find several discipleship-themed articles that will help shape your thinking about this subject. You might even copy them and give them to your volunteer leaders and parents. You’ll also find the Annual Thematic Listing – all the songs that have been included in Youth Leaders Only this past year are listed by theme. What a great resource! You’ll also enjoy the insightful “Heart of the Artist” interviews – get Intentional the inside story on Owl City, Peter Furler, Royal Tailor, and Dominic Balli. The “reTuned” section features Biblical discussion guides for a bunch of popular secular songs. And we’ve got a double-article feature in the Modern Worship section along with a pile of worship Influence – song lead sheets for you to use with your worship band. I hope you’ll be intentional about using these resources to The Real influence teenagers to follow Jesus!
