Happy Mother's Day!

Madonna and Child by Albin Egger-Lienz (1921) SUNDAY, MAY 9, 2021 pastor’s note

On this Mother’s Day I want to wish a most blessed and joyous occasion to all mothers. May the role you play in your children and family’s life bring the grace of God to those you love and allow them to know more fully the love God has for them. May your own witness of faithfully drawing near the God of life and the Prince of Peace encourage others to seek to always deepen that relationship in their own lives. And may the work God has given you in participating in His creative nature, continue to bear fruit and blessings within our world.

For those of you who have been at St. Thomas More parish for a couple decades, you might recall an assistant that was named Fr. Hermanagild (Herman) Jayachandra. Several years ago, he returned to his native home in India and due to health reasons has not been able to return to the U.S. We received word that Fr. Herman died last Sunday. He was a good priest and a wonderful friend to many. I would ask you to remember him in your prayers. His brother Leo made a YouTube memorial available that might bring back memories of him and his beautiful smile. You can watch it at https://youtu.be/gLuKJptzLwY.

This is an historic week for a couple reasons. One hundred and four years ago this Thursday, May 13, in a remote area of Portugal, our Blessed Mother appeared to three children in what would be a series of visions at Fatima. In 1917 World War I was waging. The communist revolution had started to form in Russia beginning what would end in the deaths of millions and the systematic tearing apart of the religious and social culture of most of Eastern Europe. And the world would soon be dealing with the deadly pandemic called the Spanish Flu. Mary’s message called for us all to reform our lives and do penance for our sins. She asks us to pray the Rosary daily.

One of the secrets she revealed to the children would be manifest just forty years ago this week when a fairly newly elected Pope St. John Paul II would be going around St. Peter’s Square during the weekly audience, greeting the pilgrims. On that day, a 23 year old Turkish citizen named Mehmet Ali Agca would attempt to assassinate him. The pope was struck with four shots, the most serious being the two that lodged in his abdomen, narrowly missing an artery.

Pope St. John Paul II credited our Blessed Mother with directing the bullet in such a way that he would not be mortally wounded. The pope said, about that day: “One hand fired, and another guided the bullet.” He was very aware that the shooting happened on the same day that the appearance in Fatima had taken place, and later donated the bullet to the Bishop of Fatima, who placed it in the crown of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima at the Shrine. As we remember the loving Lady of Fatima this week, let us take to heart one who cares for us so deeply. Her call to prayer, repentance for sin and a life lived in response to her Son is well worth our attention. – Msgr. Tom

2 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER a reflection on today’s readings

Grow as a Disciple I have 20/15 vision. I can see things in the distance as well as close up. But that doesn’t mean I can see everything perfectly. Because of a difference in how each eye focuses, I can’t find those hidden images in “magic eye” posters, and forget trying to watch a 3D movie! Seeing all things perfectly is not something many of us could claim, including Peter. And yet, with God’s help, he understands a vision God gave to him: “In truth,” Peter says, “I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation, whoever fears Him and acts uprightly is acceptable to Him.”

Through God’s mercy and Jesus’ redemptive cross, the kingdom of God has been prepared for all peoples. God’s saving power has been revealed. With faith, and the help of the Holy Spirit in living out the commandments, we can fix our eyes on Christ ¬– the revelation of God’s love who came into the world that we might have life through Him. Go Evangelize So much information comes to us every day, in all forms of media, there are now even shortcuts to the shortcuts for grasping the content. My personal favorite is the abbreviation, “TL; DR” which means, “too long, didn’t read.” Some might claim that we are dumbing down our culture with this type of shorthand notation, or we could argue that clear, concise and straightforward is simply best.

And that is what Jesus gives us today in His one commandment: “Love one another as I love you.” He offers commentary for the commandment and gives reasons for why He is telling it to us, but the crux of it cannot be missed: love one another. It is a commandment both simple, yet complex; easy, yet at times exponentially difficult to live. So Jesus provides the key to fulfilling it by saying, “remain in My love." Faithfulness to a sacramental life and participation in communal living give us the grace to remain in that love – which in turn transforms and enables us to share that love with others. Pray To honor the celebration of Mother’s Day, pray the Rosary today for the intentions of our mothers, for those who have been motherly influences to us and for those who long to be mothers. – Written by The Faithful Disciple

3 SUNDAY, MAY 9, 2021

WELCOME HOME As a reminder, no reservations for Mass needed beginning with next weekend Masses on Saturday & Sunday, May 15 & 16. All entrances to the church will be open and parking available in all campus parking lots. Social distancing and wearing masks requirements are still in place.

McCallin Hall is available for those who prefer a little more distance between other Mass attendees. All Masses in McCallin Hall will be broadcast from the Church.

Returning to Mass Q&A

In this time of transition and return to more familiar worship practices, we have asked Sue Kenfield parishioner and local specialist to share some thoughts and reflections:

With all the pews opening, how can I feel comfortable sitting in closer proximity to people?

Understandably, people may be uncomfortable. We have all developed new habits following the COVID-19 restrictions. The good news is that those restrictions to worshiping in person are ending. Developing higher levels of resiliency will aid you in adapting to those changes.

Fear is a powerful emotion to overcome and doing so requires developing a different perspective. What steps can you take if you are fearful?

First, remember what the Lord repeatedly says, “Fear not for I am with you.” (Isaiah 41:10) View returning to Mass as an opportunity to have your faith prevail over your fear. I have been attending Mass weekly during the last year. Getting to share routinely in His Eucharist has been immensely helpful during these trying times.

Second, ask yourself, “Do I see things as they truly are, or as I fear them to be?” Look at objective data rather than what your emotions are telling you. St. Thomas More and other churches have not had COVID-19 outbreaks, indicating it’s safe to worship in person. Where else have you shared space with others and have been fine?

Third, become more optimistic. Optimism is the ability to look for the good and maintain a positive outlook, even in the face of adversity. It is another key to becoming more resilient and deepening your faith. Do you see challenging experiences as an opportunity to grow? Look at this opportunity as a chance to grow in your faith, trust in God, and reconnect with your faith community.

Implementing these steps will help you develop more resiliency and ease your fears about returning to Mass.
