In the first reading (Acts 1:1‑11), the narrative is very clear about what hap- pened! Jesus appeared alive to His disciples after He was buried. There were many revelations during which he spoke and ate with them to confirm that he was not a ghost or a spirit but risen from the dead. He was alive in body and spirit.

After many conversations with his disciples and explaining to them the mystery of the word incarnated, he spoke more intimately with them. He made a final recommendation to remain in Jerusalem for the who would be in charge to give the courage and strength that they needed to be witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, they would proclaim the Good News of Salvation to others. They would have signs that would accom- pany them when performing miracles in the name of Jesus: to drive out demons, speak new languages, or pick up serpents with their hands. If they drank anything deadly, it would not harm them. They would lay hands on the sick, and the sick would recover.

Even though Jesus was lifted, and a cloud took him from their sight on the day of his ascension, he was with them supporting and spon- soring their mission: "I will be with you always, even until the end of the world," says the Lord. In our present time, we know that the Lord is seated at the right hand of the Father, and we proclaim it when we recite the Creed, but he is also with us, especially when we contemplate the real presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

In another closely related image, Jesus becomes the head of His mystical body, and we the members. We become one with him when we receive Holy Communion, in which he is a part of us. There isn't any part of our bodies that he doesn't touch, making us one with him.

His forgiveness is present in the sacrament of reconciliation. In this mystical manifestation of His love, we feel His pardon and the healing necessary to live in peace in this present time. He has ascended not to get away from us but to bring heaven closer to us.

The Christian of Pentecost is a , which is celebrated on the 50th day (the Seventh Sunday) from Easter Sunday. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks, as described in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1-31).

The holiday is also called "White Sunday" or "Whitsunday" or "," especially in the , where traditionally the next day, Whit Monday, was also a public holiday (since 1971 fixed by statute on the last Monday in May). The Monday after Pentecost is a legal holiday in many European countries.

In , Pentecost can also refer to the entire fifty days of Easter through Pentecost inclusive; hence the book containing the liturgical texts is called the ".” Since its date depends on the , Pentecost is a "moveable feast."

Pentecost is one of the Great feasts in the , a in the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church, a in the Lutheran Churches, and a Principal Feast in the Anglican Communion. Many Christian denominations provide a special liturgy for this holy celebration. Wikipedia

ASCENSION OF THE LORD

The Ascension, in Christian belief, the ascent of Jesus Christ into heaven on the 40th day after his Resurrection (Easter being reckoned as the first day). Prior to that time, the Ascension was commemorated as a part of the celebration of the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The Ascension is meaningful to Christians as it signifies the end of his work on Earth and allowed him to prepare a place for followers in heaven. For many Christians, the fact that Jesus' followers witnessed him ascending into the clouds leaves no doubt that Jesus is alive and with God the Father in Heaven, and is no longer limited to living on Earth.

The Ascension is important to Christians because it shows that Jesus really had overcome death — he wasn't just resurrected to die again, but to live forever. Wikipedia

MOTHER’S DAY FLOWERS

GREETINGS FROM COLOMBIA Fr. Alfonso celebrates Mass in his private chapel in Colombia in honor of our mothers.

SAINT OF THE WEEK: DAMIEN DE VEUSTER When Damien de Veuster, of the Fathers of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, came to the leper set- tlement on the Hawaiian island of Moloka’i in 1863, the situation was so horrific that he spent his first night sleeping under a tree. Separated from their family members and ostracized from society, the men, women, and children in the settlement struggled with despair. They lived in filth. The dead went unbur- ied. Damien organized every aspect of their society, building homes, schools, and hospitals, raising crops, and protecting orphans. He even brought together a girls’ choir. After sixteen years working on Moloka’i, Damien himself succumbed to leprosy. He was canonized in 2009.
