Science Fiction: Genre Fiction and Cultural Value
Impact case study (REF3b) Institution: Royal Holloway, University of London Unit of Assessment: English Title of case study: Science Fiction: Genre Fiction and Cultural Value 1. Summary of the impact (indicative maximum 100 words) Professor Adam Roberts is a specialist in the literature and culture of science fiction (SF), and a creative writer: the author of 13 full-length novels, nine novella-length fictions, and dozens of short stories in the SF idiom. His research-led creative practice leads to three kinds of impact: first, in cultural life, Roberts influences and enriches public perceptions of SF, bringing a new critical self-consciousness to the form; secondly, he supports the SF sector by providing it with cultural capital, enhanced by his reconfiguration of its value; thirdly, sales of his works contribute economic capital to the publishing and SF industries. 2. Underpinning research (indicative maximum 500 words) Adam Roberts has been a prolific researcher in literary history and creative practice since his appointment to Royal Holloway in 1991. His work demonstrates that while SF is seriously valued as genre fiction, it is not commensurately valued as literature. Roberts argues that there needs to be a reincorporation into SF of irony, parody, and satire, embracing a strand within its own history and acknowledging older models (as provided by Swift, Voltaire, Verne et al). This pushes back the limiting boundaries of SF as genre fiction, limits that SF writers themselves have previously enforced by taking their own genre too seriously. His research in SF began in 1999 when he published his first science fiction novel, written concomitantly with his study Science Fiction (revised second edition 2005). -

ACTOR: A NOVEL IN THREE ACTS ^ A Novel Submitted to the Faculty of San Francisco State University "ZvlH In Fulfillment of Z^C,CU) the Requirements for the Degree Masters In Creative Writing By Mitchell Duran San Francisco, California Spring 2019 Copyright by Mitchell Duran 2019 CERTIFICATION OF APPROVAL I certify that I have read Actor: A Novel in Three Acts by Mitchell Duran, and that in my opinion this work meets the criteria for approving a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree Master in Creative Writing and Fiction at San Francisco State University. ACTOR: A NOVEL IN THREE ACTS Mitchell Duran San Francisco, California 2019 Sanford Meisner, one of the world's most famous acting teachers of the last 20“ century, inspired by Lee Strasberg, Konstantin Stanislavski, and Uta Hagen, a teacher of The Method, once said, “For one to act and act well, one must live truthfully under the given circumstances.” For Ave Gardener, the lead protagonist in my debut novel Actor: A Novel in Three Acts currently at 110,000 words, this creed is more than just craft to Ave Gardener. It is a way of life. At age five, Ave’s once famous mother, Edie, put him on the stage. Always overbearing yet instructive, Ave, by the influence of his mother, is admitted and eventually graduates from Juilliard, one of the top acting conservatory’s in the country. To escape his mother’s influence, Ave moves from New York to Chicago, the land of improvisation and gritty theatre to become his own actor. -

Sci-fi, Cli-fi or Speculative Fiction: Genre and Discourse in Margaret Atwood’s “Three Novels I Won’t Write Soon” ABSTRACT Margaret Atwood’s short prose piece, “Three Novels I Won’t Write Soon,” poses a conundrum for anyone seeking to place it within a genre. With features of science fiction, speculative fiction and a postmodern prose poem, the text addresses the topic of climate change and its concomitant fiction without offering closure. After examining and attempting to resolve the issue of genre, the paper aligns Atwood’s discourse of indeterminacy with the parallel discourse of climate change as expressed in science writing, in order to account for this text’s unusual structural and stylistic features. Keywords: Atwood, Margaret; speculative fiction; science fiction; slipstream; climate change Znanstvena fantastika, klimatska fantastika ali spekulativna fikcija: žanr in diskurz v »Three Novels I Won’t Write Soon« Margaret Atwood PovzeTEK Žanrska opredelitev kratke zgodbe Margaret Atwood »Three Novels I Won’t Write Soon« povzroča nemalo težav. Z združevanjem značilnosti znanstvene fantastike, spekulativne fikcije in postmoderne pesmi v prozi se Atwoodova v tej kratki zgodbi loteva tematike klimatskih sprememb in pripadajoče proze, toda brez zaključka. Analiza nenavadnih strukturnih in stilističnih značilnosti te zgodbe v smislu razjasnitve žanrske problematike pokaže, -

ISBN 978-951-51-5776-8 (PDF) Unigrafia Helsinki 2020 Abstract Reading Mutant Narratives explores how narratives of environmental and personal transformation in contemporary ecological science fiction can develop more-than- human modes of embodied experience. More specifically, it attends to the conflicted yet potentially transformative experientiality of mutant narratives. Mutant narratives are viewed as uneasy hybrids of human-centered and posthumanist science fiction that contain potential for ecological understanding. Drawing on narrative studies and empirical reading studies, the dissertation begins from the premise that in suitable conditions, reading fiction may give rise to experiential change. The study traces and describes experiential changes that take place while reading works of science fiction. The bodily, subjective and historical conditions of reading are considered alongside the generic contexts and narrative features of the fictional works studied.
