2 The Parish Letter

From Geoffrey As I write this, there is enormous uncertainty and fear in many people in Britain. Uncertainty and anxiety over the political direction the country is heading in with Brexit on the agenda, whether social care will be affordable, the future of the NHS, our schools, and so on and so on. And increasing fear of many things, with acts of terrorism and radicalisation and terrorists at the top of the list. And I think what makes the uncertainty and fear worse is the feeling of helplessness, that the issues are too big for any one of us. Fear and anxiety are not comfortable companions. Indeed they can ruin our lives. I guess we’ve all come across people who are agoraphobic – who fear going out in public, or even just outside. When even getting out to a shop can be a triumph achieved at great cost. And then there are many people who are afraid of going out alone or in the dark because someone might attack them. But even if we don’t normally have that fear, all of us can imagine being caught up in a terrorist attack like in Manchester or Bridge. Though in fact it’s not likely to happen to us – we are vastly more likely to be injured crossing a road than being caught up in a major incident. But at the same time we are seeing some wonderful responses where whole communities are gathering and affirming their determination to keep going out as normal, to not give in to the terror that a terrorist is trying to create. Amazing pictures of all sorts of people united in determination to stand firm. Over the last weeks many people have come up to me to talk about what’s going on, saying something like “How can they do this? What’s happening to our country? I’m so worried.” And normally there’s a comment about the role of religion – which is undeniable – and we discuss how Christian violence sometimes erupts in this country; notably Bishop Cranmer (who had written the Book of Common Prayer) being burnt to death by other Christians in 1556, and the Protestant/Catholic conflict in Northern Ireland that still flares up from time to time. Where does the violence come from? Typically people resort to violence when anger and frustration bubble over, when arguments and discussion don’t work. Violence is a sort of short-cut to trying to get people to change their minds. contd. on Page 5 3 Churchwardens St Mary the Virgin, Holne Any queries either to Gillian Parker (see below) or Marion Kaye (see Page 2 for details) St Raphael, Huccaby Gillian Parker Thimble Hall, , PL20 6SD 01364 631507 [email protected] St John the Baptist, Leusdon Geoff Bamsey 26 Old Manor Close, Holne Cross, TQ13 7JF 01364 652820 [email protected] Shan Palmes 3 Dunstone Cottages, Widecombe, TQ13 7TH 01364 621573 [email protected] St Gabriel, Postbridge Annie Smerdon The Stores, Postbridge, PL20 6TH 01822 880201 [email protected] Wendy Watson Middle Merripit Farm, Postbridge, PL20 6TJ 01822 880215 [email protected] St Pancras, Widecombe Michael Pascoe Wooder Bungalow, Widecombe, TQ13 7TR 01364 621333 [email protected] Penny Whale Wayside, , TQ13 7TA 01364 621411 [email protected] St Andrews, Ashburton William West Tawstock, Knowle Close, Ashburton TQ13 7RA 01364 652666 [email protected] Bill Shapley 18 Beverley Gardens, Ashburton, TQ13 7BL 01364 652263 [email protected] St Mary the Virgin, Bickington Peter Warren Rentor, Bickington 01626 821213 [email protected]

Claiming this in the name of Jesus shows the way in which religious teaching can be distorted out of all recognition. Jesus spent his life in a country that was far more violent than anything we might encounter, and as he engaged with people at all levels to tackle social injustices, poverty, greed and hypocrisy, he condemned violence whenever he encountered it. Don’t defend yourself, turn the other cheek. And he expected his followers to do the same, to renounce violence. So how did they handle the feelings of vulnerability and fear that feeling defenceless brings? Well, Jesus taught them (and taught us) to look outwards rather than inwards. To set self aside, and think of others. To love our neighbour – to love them and care for them however badly they behave. And then to forgive them. To try and understand why they are so upset, to offer empathy. Who is our neighbour Jesus was asked? Everyone, however different, said Jesus, as he told a story in which a Syrian from Samaria was the hero. By offering our love to God and to our neighbours, Jesus showed that personal fear can be set aside. For when someone loves us we can trust them and not be afraid. When we fully believe that God loves us, we can walk without fear through the rest of our lives. With every blessing, Geoffrey

Fun with singing, craft, Messy Church (All Age Worship) hot meal & friendship. For families and Thursday July 13th St Andrew’s Church Hall. everyone. As I sit here writing this month’s article I think of the inspiring Messy Church All Age Fiesta in Cathedral yesterday. We took two full cars from Ashburton Family Service and joined hundreds of Messy Church families who came from all over St Andrew’s Church . We made wind mobiles powered by balloon power. There were 10 July 2nd 10.30am to 12 activities around the cathedral for all to have a go at. We sang modern Messy Church songs with Katherine Lyddon leading us. Then the story was told in an Thursday July 13th 3.30pm interactive way; waves of people standing when their character was St Andrew’s Hall mentioned. (Second Thursday) Bishop Nick joined in with the spirit of the event. When one of our children Fun Size Church quizzed him why he wore a dress he said it was so people could see he was No services this term different. The Cathedral staff were just so delighted to see the Cathedral full Moor Church of children their parents and the all the Messy Church Folk. July 16th Due to Chloe’s work schedule changes, wedding anniversary and Francis Breakfast @ 9am July 30th and Jane’s holiday we have decided not to hold Fun Size Church this St Andrew’s Hall Summer term. We will, though, have a Fun Filled Autumn Term planned. Contact Jane Father God, help us to love others and treat them as you want us to. 654 067 Jane

10 Holne Revel The Revel, on July 29, is a revival of a very old tradition in Holne. Although the earliest record we can find is dated back to 1835, other historical notes suggest it is much older. Scoriton Village Hall New volunteers needed The Village Hall could do with some fresh blood. We've been staring at each other for years at our irregular meetings, and frankly, are getting bored of each other...! But seriously, if anybody has a will to do something for our community then getting involved with the Village Hall could be just the thing. I can't stress enough that the duties and responsibilities are not onerous. We meet 6 or 7 times a year - usually in the pub. The help and ideas we need are associated with management and keeping an eye on the building, perhaps meeting local tradespeople to attend to work at the hall. Anyone with a bit of a thing for social media could also be useful. There are maybe 3 events in a year where extra pairs of hands are welcome, a larger pool of people means there is less for everyone to do. So what do you think? Fancy having a go? If you'd like to have a chat about it, please email, or give me a call on 643875. [email protected]

Richard Lester Concert A big thank you to Richard Lester for his wonderful concert at St. Raphael’s at the end of May. The small, but appreciative audience, enjoyed pieces by Handel and Bach on a lovely Spring evening and the event raised £80 for the church funds. Richard’s latest CD was also on sale and several of us took advantage of this opportunity. We hope that we can hold another concert and this time not clash with major sporting fixtures and other events that may have reduced the potential numbers of people attending – you don’t know what you missed! More thanks Although the installation of the composting toilet was completed in February, we need to complete the landscaping and reconfigure the rain water collection arrangements. To do this we had to raise £1300. We had a good start with a grant from the Widecombe Fair Committee and a private donation. Now I am delighted to say that as a result of a very generous grant of £1,000 from the Cycling Club, who run the Dartmoor Classic every year, we have been able to give Perrett and Family Builders the go-ahead to finish the work. So many thanks to the Cycling Club. The availability of toilet facilities has already made a difference particularly at the concert and will undoubtedly be useful at the forthcoming weddings due to be held in the Chapel. With this major project virtually completed, we can return to general maintenance matters such as repairing the plaster work and improving the decoration inside the Chapel. Visitor comments In addition to the usual complimentary comments in the Visitors’ Book, one visitor has noted that her grandfather attended the school at St. Raphael’s between 1917 and 1921. Apparently he often told his family how after walking through the snow to school, the children would hang their coats in front of the open fire to dry them. We have also had some visitors from New Zealand who have ancestors who lived in the Old Farmhouse at Hexworthy 200 years ago. 21 • QUALIFLIED SWEEP (City & Guilds, HETAS) • Member of APCIS • Prices from as little as £35 • Experienced • Very Clean • Approved solid fuel engineer (HETAS) CALL Steve Thompson on: email: [email protected] www.thechimney-sweep.co.uk 07866 025686 or 01626 587587

We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Church Hall on Tor Royal Lane, . It will cost you £1. We are a fun group of mixed age range ladies and we do have a good laugh. Do come and see what we get up to. At our meeting on Wednesday 7th June we had a hands-on creative evening decorating ceramic plates with Brenda Mcgrogan, who helped us along into creating a commemorative ceramic plate in aid of our 20th birthday this year. A very sociable evening. Our next meeting on Wednesday 5th July will be a further guided walk in our history of Tavistock learning. Our guide Andrew will meet us under the archway by the museum in Tavistock at 6.45pm, this walk will be easy going so normal footwear is all that will be required. Afterwards we shall go to Weatherspoons for 7.45pm for supper for those that would like to. Thinking ahead to our celebrations, we shall be hosting an afternoon tea at Jayne’s Cafe (formerly Lords) in Princetown for all past and present members of High Moorland Women’s Institute on Wednesday 13th September.
