Apr.-June, 2009 NOTES FROM THE TRAILHEAD:

It is with mixed emotions that I write my final article as Chapter Chair. I’ve been actively involved as a leader of the NJ Chapter since 1996, holding positions from news- letter editor to chapter chair. We’ve seen quite a few changes over the years, but nothing as exciting as our pending merger with the Ramapo Chapter. By now, you should have received a mailer with de- tails about the merger, including the new bylaws, and slate of officers. While I’ll still play a small role in our new, combined chapter, the leadership will be handed off to a new group of leaders with new ideas. Many of the non- elected positions will still be held by some of our excep- tionally talented volunteers. Phyllis Key will remain as the Membership Chair, Ed Fanslau will still be Cross Country Skiing Chair, Rob Lehmann will remain as webmaster, and I will take the position as Special Outings Chair. Other positions will be held by volunteers from the Ramapo Chapter. Of course, for all of this to happen, we will be hold- ing a ratification vote at our next annual meeting on April 26th at 4:30 pm in the Central Unitarian Church in Pa- ramus. Please consider joining us, not just to vote on the merger, but to celebrate our years together as the North Jersey Chapter. As always, our meeting will be preceded by a pot luck dinner; one of our most popular events. In closing, I’d like to thank you for all of the great times we’ve had together. I’d like to thank all of the volun- teers who have made our chapter so successful over the years. And, I’d like to thank you for being members, active or otherwise, of the best club in New Jersey! See you on the trails… Christopher Tausch, Chapter Chair

Camping in Cape May, NJ, May 22-25. Everyone had such a great time last year, that we are doing it again this year. We'll be at the southernmost point in New Jersey "where nature smiles for 30 miles”. Those who wish to go must have their own camping gear, and meals, except for one night when we have a potluck dinner and everyone brings something to share for dinner. I can supply the stoves. Bicy- cles are a must, as Cape May has easy flat roads and driving will be horrendous during our stay there due to the holiday. If you are interested in joining us for fun and lots of laughs, please call to reserve your site at the Depot Travel Park which is one mile from the Victorian town of Cape May. Their number is 609-884-2533. The rate is $40.50 a night and a $50.00 check must be sent to the park office within two weeks after your reservation is made. Credit cards are not accepted. The website is www.thedepottravelpark.com. I will be on site #122. To look at the site map, go into the sites tab. Please confirm your site # to Leslie McGlynn at 973-252-8122 or [email protected]. Directions to Depot Travel Park, 800 Broadway Avenue, West Cape May: Garden State Parkway to exit 0. Follow ferry signs (1 mile) then 2 miles South on Route 626 (Seashore Road).

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (The Earth Institute at Co- lumbia University) on 9W Palisades has published their public lecture schedule for 4 Sundays in March (15th & 29th) and April (19th & 26th). The lectures are from 3:00- 4:00 p.m. with an admission of $5 at the door. Check out [email protected] or call 845-365-8998 for more info and to register.

Many ADK'ers travel to Heart Lake for a weekend of camaraderie and work projects with free meals and lodging twice a year in Spring & Fall. Fantastic projects have been undertaken with the talents of ADK mem- bers within the ADK Loj and adjacent campground, trails and struc- tures. Even if you don't have specific repair project talents, work is found for willing hands. All these volunteer hours save ADK a great many dollars. The HLP work weekend this Spring is April 24,25,26 Friday thru Sunday. In the Fall the dates are Nov. 6-8th. If you are interested in joining the fun, contact Tom Andrews, chair of the Heart Lake Property Committee [email protected] or 315-339-3753. A similar program takes place much closer to home. Camp Glen Grey off Rte 202 in Mahwah has Spring Beaver Day on Saturday, April 25th. Lunch will be provided for all workers. Check out the activities at www.glengray.org. They have some cabin/sites that need adoption too. Check that out by contacting Drew at [email protected]. If anyone has children or grandchildren in scouting, this is a great place for badge projects.

ADK-North Jersey Members to Attempt 100k Hike in One Day. Insane? Most likely! ADK Members Rob Lehmann (our Webmaster), Donna Ellis, Norm Brandinger, Ned Gardner and Laura Gardner have signed up for the 36th annual “One Day Hike” to be held on April 25th, 2009. The hike begins at 3AM, headlamps and all, near the Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC and proceeds along the length of the C&O Canal Towpath until the finish line in Harpers Ferry, WV. In order to get the coveted T-Shirt they must reach the finish line by midnight. That’s 21 hours to cover 62 miles! They must average 3mph including any and all breaks for food, water, blisters and well you know…biological time. The group’s motto: “Pain in Inevitable… Misery is Optional” For more info about the One Day Hike see: www.onedayhike.org
