NEW HON. SECRETARY The Society is pleased to announce that John Hooper has kindly volunteered to act as its Hon. Secretary, with immediate effect. The Society is deeply indebted to John, who is already tackling his role with relish. MEETINGS Wednesday 27 March 2019 – Meeting The Society extends the warmest of welcomes to this evening’s speaker, Chris Lewis. Whether batting, bowling or fielding, he performed with flair which appealed to onlookers. He was one of the finest all-rounders of his generation. It has often been said that he never quite fulfilled his potential, but his achievements were substantial and would have been envied by lesser mortals. He played in 32 tests and 53 ODIs. He was selected for seven successive England tours between 1989/90 to 1994/95, travelling twice to the West Indies and Australia, as well as to New Zealand, India and Sri Lanka. He remains one of the few England players to appear in a World Cup Final. On the domestic scene, he was a member of the Leicestershire side that won the County Championship in 1998, acting as stand-in captain on occasions, and was a member of the Surrey team that won the Sunday League in 1996 and the Benson and Hedges Cup Final a year later. CLAIRMONTE CHRISTOPHER LEWIS was born in Georgetown, Guyana, on 14 February 1986, but went to school in Willesden, North London.

    1 The Recollections of James Graham Adam (who married Beatrice Eleanor Man) I was born at No. ? Woodside Terrace, Glasgow, on 22nd February 1862 and christened at St. Jude's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Flint. My father was John Lindsay Adam, an East Indian merchant, head of the firm of Adam & Co., Glasgow, Batavia & Surabaya. He was the youngest of a family of I believe 13, and his father was also a merchant in Glasgow. He and his wife are buried in the Churchyard of St. Mungo's Cathedral in Glasgow. Of my father's family, the only ones I knew or have any recollection of were the eldest, James Graham Adam, after whom I was named, but don't remember ever seeing. He married a Miss Macindoe, whom we used to call Aunt James, to distinguish her from my father's sister, Aunt Jane. There were eleven children of this marriage: 1. Frank Forbes, who became Sir Frank Forbes Adam1 Bart. My father gave him his first start in life by taking him into his firm. 2. Charles, who became manager of the firm of Graham & Co. Oporto. 3. Arthur, who went out to Australia and was never heard of again. 4. Archie, who after a long career as a merchant in Glasgow died leaving a large fortune. 5. Jane, who married John Graham, head of the firm of Graham & Co. Glasgow & Calcutta, and later became a baronet2. 6. Mary, who married Robert Orr (a large and wealthy cotton and thread manufacturer) 7. Fanny, who married John Orr manufacturers.

At the first general meeting of the Club, Mr. J. A. Mills was elected President and Mr. W. Massey to the position of Secretary. Permission was granted by the Heidelberg Shire Council for the Club to share the wicket at Heidelberg Park and the Club's first equipment was obtained from the recently disbanded St. Andrews Church of England Cricket Club. One XI was entered in the Heidelberg District Cricket Association which comprised the following eight Clubs: Alphington, Fairfield, Fairfield Diggers, Fairfield Footballers, Heidelberg, Ivanhoe, North lvanhoe and Rosanna. Rosanna were beaten outright in their first match by Fairfield; the Rosanna team in batting order being: J. Watson, G. Pearson, R. Curtis, A. Greig, K. Fowler (Captain), F. Biddiscombe, J. S. Mills, O. Gepp, A. Biddiscombe, J. Uren, A. Greenwood. However, success came in the second match with a first innings win over lvanhoe and at the end of the season Rosanna finished in 5th place.

Can there ever have been a more enchanting name for a cricket ground? It might just as easily Mhave served as a title of a sonnet by Keats or the subject of a lyrical ballad by Wordsworth. But no, it is a cricket ground located in north Hampshire, donated by Lt Col John May, a member of a famous Basingstoke brewery family, to the local community for the purposes of sporting activity. Cricket has been played there since the mid-17th century and it is currently home to Basingstoke and North Hants Cricket Club. From 1966 to 2000, Hampshire played a couple of their home games there every year. A number of counties had similar festival weeks away from headquarters. Scarborough, Harrogate, Tunbridge Wells, Hastings, Eastbourne, Bournemouth, Bath, Cheltenham and Guildford were once as much of the first-class game as Lord’s, Old Trafford and Trent Bridge but have now sadly fallen out of favour as being uneconomic. Basingstoke Week was one such fixed point in the calendar, not greatly loved of the players, largely because of the cramped and spartan changing facilities, with a wooden floor that had more splinters than the gun deck of HMS Victory at the battle of Trafalgar.
