The station has been installed by the Southern Africa Devel- opment Community Monitoring for Environment and Secu- rity in Africa (SADC MESA) and was launched by the Dep- uty Dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Chomora Mikeka on behalf of the College Principal. The station does space observation and monitoring of agriculture, drought, floods and wild fire which may bring hazards to people’s lives. Launching the station, Dr. Mikeka pointed out that Chancellor College has experts that were trained to help in understanding the interpretation of the data that the satellite station downloads every fifteen minutes in order to guide the nation in terms of disaster risk management and early warn- ing systems. He further said the data will cross cut many aspects The launch team insight of the receiver station mounted on ranging from human ecology, chemistry, physics, biology the roof of the GIS laboratory. and geography and as such they will be offering short cours- es to officials and technicians from other academic institu- tions and Government departments on how to use it.

GES Department Receives Geophysics Equipment

The Geography and Earth Sciences (GES) Department in Conjunc- tion with the University of Illinois (USA) is implementing a Capacity Building in Hydrogeophysics (CBHG) Project in the Lake Chilwa Basin with funding support from Geophysists without Borders (GWB). The Pro- ject is being championed by Professor T. Larson (University of Illinois), Dr. Z. Dulanya and Dr. E. Mwathunga (Geography Dept, University of Malawi) and has two main objectives namely:

1) Human benefit:– to provide villagers with increased access to clean drink- ing water; 2) Capacity and institution building:- a. To strengthen the competence and exchange of knowledge amongst the institutions involved b. To support existing Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes at Chancel- lor College through Curriculum reviews Geophysics c. To develop capacity in field expertise through the development of an Equipment applied geophysics field program

As part of capacity Building initiative the project is working in con- junction with the Master’s program in water resources modelling and gov- ernance to introduce components of groundwater exploration and geophys- ics.

Dr. Chomora Mikeka Participates in the Validation of Intellectual Property (IP) Policy Guidelines for African Institutions at ARIPO in Harare (30—31 October, 2017)

This is a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) project, to develop Guidelines on Intellectual Property Policy and Strategy for an ef- fective use of the IP System by Universities and Research and Development Institutions in Africa. Dr. Mikeka represented Malawi and together with over 23 other African country representatives, a draft document developed by consultants was reviewed, validated. And adopted for Africa. This is a very useful doc- ument to guide us in Intellectual Property (IP) policy finalization by the University of Malawi among other higher educational institutions in Africa and exploitation of IP for technology development. “Publish or perish” was good for the science while “Patent or perish” is good for technology. Pub- lishing & patenting results into science & technology respectively.
